Does N900 still needs mYTube?

Hello everyone,

I've been away from my project and ITT for a while now.
I'm not up to date with the UI the new OS brings in the
social site area (especialy YouTube).

Īs there a integrated application for browsing/downloading
for YouTube ? Is there still need for mYTube?
I'd love resuming work on the project.

Waiting for your thoughts,
-Mihai

The browser has builtin flash that works really well, no frame dropping, but only it the lowest quality. Someone has already built a dedicatef YouTube app for Fremantle called ZouTube. I'd still love to see mYTube on Fremantle expecially since it uses MPlayer backend instead of gstreamer.

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

It doesn't need it in terms of "you can't watch the videos without it".

OTOH, I find such applications nice because they remove the unwanted overhead you get when loading youtube-pages in the browser.

ZouTube's what I use right now, but I remember mytube had a very different UI concept and gave details (on request) I don't have in zoutube right now.

I would appreciate having both fight for the best implementation. ;)

Please i would love mytube......

It is the best application for watching youtube without all the hassle.

Can you get it to download the hi def version of the videos if possible?

Thanks

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

It still needs an app to view HQ videos and none so far seem to let you login and view your subscriptions like I can on my iPod.

Also YouTube in the browser kills the battery due to no hardware acceleration.

So it certainly needs something, not sure if your app fixes any of the above.

can anyone help with the current status of mplayer on n900:

1) is there a good port as in OS2008?
2) is it rc2?
3) some other question for later :)

1) Alas: no. :)
It's a straight build (mostly; not containing any N900-specific optimisations) and it works, true, but sound will not work unless you are in the General profile (true for a lot of applications, TBH), it's not DSP accelerated (not a problem for YouTube, I guess), and it loses the ability to be controlled by the keyboard when you focus out on its window...
It's also still stuck in extras-devel, I believe.
2) Nope, it's RC1.

Double tap on the video. :)
But it does still leave its seekbar along the bottom...

zoutube does have search, just type to search on main screen or select search from the menu.

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

in this case it makes more sense to add extra features to zoutube then to split the effort in different projects ...

ZouTube suck...it's not full screen...and the last time i check...it gives me the same TOP RATED and MOST VIEW from last week or whatever weeks i started watching before.

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

Full screen mode is really missing, and I hope it will be implemented soon.
But TOP RATED or MOST VIEW of all times don't change noticibly within a few weeks.

The only youtube app (for N8*0) that will let you log in is digiaatscene.

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

I remove flash and a bunch of other things anywhere I can. So mYTube is certainly what I'll use to browse and watch. Of course an alternative is youtube-dl and copypasting the urls.

Thanks for the good work.

Would be great to have it up and running again.

And maybe for other sites as well, eg. megavideo ;)

Ive been tinkering with zoutube, you can download the .flv but it doesn't populate in the native media player on the n900 when I launch it. The complete dream would be being able to download from youtube and other sites and launch it via the media player and have the audio play thru the FM transmitter...any thoughts or brainstorms on this?

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

MyTube and especially the "awesome" ZouTube would benefit from user customizable saved searches or YouTube RSS feeds.

I would much rather be able to have quick, one touch access to recent AP, Al Jazeera, CBS, and BBC posted videos than "Pets & Animals" or the entertainment lists that ZouTube currently provides.

BTW, MyTube was "awesome" on the N8**'s for which I believe the current version was designed. The purpose of this thread I thought was for the author to gage interest for developing a N900 port. Not to cause anyone to load pieces of "sshit" on to their phones. :)

A quick shameless plug: If you only want to "subscribe" to YouTube RSS feeds, you can use gPodder which will from then on happily check the feed for new videos and ask you if you want to download new content to your device. The videos downloaded are in the "normal" MP4 format, and they look great and play well on the device.

You have to hit the "Subscribe" button, scroll down to "YouTube user channels", enter the username of the user you want to subscribe to and then you get a list of matching YouTube users. Pick the ones you would like to subscribe to, and let it download videos for you :)

Yup, I do that now with your most excellent program however, video must be downloaded first. It does not support streams.

Could a ZouTube or other extension be designed for GPodder to allow video streaming?

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

I found a great script for megavideo, check it out: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=42813

It starts a download but IMHO a stream is in most cases just another download.
What's great about it is that it doesn't ask for page source or sites like clipnabber.

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

Personally, I don't feel that I need any Youtube apps at all on the N900. Would be nice if I could directly open them in Media Player, but that's no big deal. I've watched entire Street Fighter tournaments on my N900, even some live tournament streams from ustream and it's all good (though ustream is a bit heavy from time to time).

So I figured it out and blew my friend away. We were driving, and I was like name any song. She named a song, and I was like give me a min or two, fired up zoutube, downloaded the song and saved it into video clips directory, it populates in the media player if you download the extra codec support, and I used the fm transmitter widget that is available in Extras-Devel, started the vid and in a matter of 2 min the song was playing through the radio.

Having the ability in a few min to download almost any song you can think of from youtube to be able to be played thru the FM transmitter is such an awesome feature. This is why the N900 is such a great phone, it just keeps getting better and better day by day.

You should check out audme.ru. Someone on these boards (I think) turned me on to this site, and talk about having access to any song you can think of...

The only problem seens to be that you can't stream the song directly from the browser like you can on your computer (odd limitation for the N900's browser) but the MP3's download just fine. It will probably get your time to listening to under a minute - impress the ladies!

Re: Does N900 still needs mYTube?

Well regarding mYTube if the main developer is still around, I have a bug to report...
Didn't know if it had sense to post it in the garage since it looks inactive since 2008...

-a friend of mine installed it, played around and selected the "bin" folder as the default video folder...
yes... I know... :|

Anyway the problems are:
-uninstalling should remove the cfg files but this doesn't happen (now I have to manually find and delete the file if I ever want to use mYTube again
-the program should start by default in a friendly folder (MyDocs) and probably not show the entire file system.

Thanks

Hi, would you be able to tell me where to delete the cfg file? I chose a wrong dir and the prog probably couldnt create a dir and now it wouldn't start at all.

Which folder should I create the dir at?

Thanks!!
