Nokia Map Loader

Well, I wanted to have the maps for my country in my Cellphone, but so far, it is impossible to download them.

This is what happens.

1.- Open Nokia Map loader (latest).
2.- If my n900 is on mass storage, it tells me to put my phone in pc suite mode.
3.- If my n900 is on PC-Suite mode, it tells me to update the mal loader (which is the latest) or to put the phone on mass storage mode.

Does anyone knows a fix for this?

Re: Nokia Map Loader

I'm having the same problem. Already installed Nokia PC Suite and it connects fine but map loader does not work...

Sorry I cannot offer you a solution but maybe someone else can???

I've no familiarity with Map Loader, but as a workaround, you might try Jaffa's instructions for downloading and adding map data manually.

I don't know if that is the issue...I was running it in my Win XP virtual machine as well but I could not connect through PC Suite mode. How did you get it to work?

Works on XP for me as well as long as I have mass storage mode selected..
The problem I have is that it is telling me that I dont have enough storage space???
To download all the maps is 5.6 Gb and Im 151 Mb short - I have deleted existing maps, so Im presuming that it downloads them to a smaller partition - is there a way round this??

Re: Nokia Map Loader

Are you guys using Jaffa's instructions as a workaround or have you got this to work using maploader?

Re: Nokia Map Loader

It works fine using Map Loader on XP - you need to make sure you've got the latest version though.

Im working on XP - but I would like to know if anyone has changed any of the settings as I cant download all the maps as Im getting a not enough space warning.
Is it possible to change the location, Im guessing that I could choose not to download all the maps, but with 32Gb internal memory - why not do it?
Im guessing that the maps are not stored on the large data partition, so am I risking problem by nearly filling whatever partition the maps are stored on???

Rob1n 2009-12-16 11:27

Re: Nokia Map Loader

The maps should be stored on the main data partition - they go into MyDocs/cities from the looks of things.

Re: Nokia Map Loader

Doesn't work on Nokia N900. Followed Jaffas direction and downloaded INTO the cities folder (by unzipping) but MAPS still insists on downloading data when you zoom out or move into a new location.
Not a major issue, as I'd be surprised if a lot of us users don't have a data connection with their sim card (after all thats part and parcel of having this amazing media phone).

Well, it does work on my N900 - and did for Amsterdam, Andorra and a few other places.

It's a major issue when you primarily use the GPS abroad and data roaming costs a fortune. Unfortunately, Ovi Maps is so ****; and I don't have an N900 car mount; that I'm still using an N810 and Wayfinder.

Doc_Raj 2009-12-16 14:15

Re: Nokia Map Loader

I downloaded the UK maps.
Also, data contracts are not that expensive (circa £5 a month) and to be honest, I think most people have a stand alone GPS dedicated for driving...I'm the sort who think a Phone/GPS for driving is never going to work.
Saying that, i REALLY miss GoogleMaps on my E71.....when I would get lost in the middle of London or needed to find a local restaurant it's as simple as search on GoogleMaps and there you go....I'm waiting for the day my N900 becomes complete with a GoogleMaps widgit/program !!!!

And yes, Ovi Maps is crap as it currently stands....but with no other choice I suppose its what we have to work with.

Re: Nokia Map Loader

In XP you can add maps by having the phone in Mass Storage mode. Nokia Map loader works fine with this, and i have added maps for my own country this way.

Xp working fine with nokia maploader and n900 :)

Even recognises n900- added all of europe maps

ajamils 2009-12-16 15:37

Re: Nokia Map Loader

I manually loaded the maps on N900 but still when I open the Maps app, it gives me a pop up saying .."downloading data". Does that mean, that it is not recognizing the maps I put on there or is it normal ?

Doc_Raj 2009-12-16 15:47

Re: Nokia Map Loader

Snap...same issue as ajamils....I might try the Map Loader thing from Paralalles in mac and see if that works.
I'm not sure if the "downloading data" refers to AGPS or that the Nokia is actually downloading data for the maps

Thats what I thought, but when I use map loader - it reports that I am 151Mb short on space..
When I fire it up it reports

space left for maps data 5.5Gb?!?

If I do a df -h I get the following

http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/58/dfh1.png

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/7066/dfhc.png

Now if Im reading this right - is it showing my home partition as 2Gb???
That cant be right?
I have installed a few apps, but not that many <12

Rob1n 2009-12-16 16:44

Re: Nokia Map Loader

That's correct, yes - /home is only a 2G partition. /home/user/MyDocs is a separate partition. This gets unmounted if you're using the USB connection in mass storage mode (or if the back cover is open).

edgedemon 2009-12-16 16:49

Re: Nokia Map Loader

Ok, at least that is one less thing to worry about, but Im confused why Im short of space?
I cant see any partition bigger than 2Gb listed there, so Im presuming that my storage area is hidden? And I still dont get why I haven't enough space for the maps

Rob1n 2009-12-16 16:55

Re: Nokia Map Loader

You won't see the storage area while you're connected in mass storage mode. When you connect in mass storage mode, it makes the devices available at a low level to the PC. This means they can't also be available on the N900, so get unmounted.

If you're not in mass storage mode, you should be able to see the partition mounted on the N900, otherwise you should be able to see it as a drive on the PC. If you can see it okay, and it shows enough space, then it must be a bug in Map Loader.

I've seen some apps which appear to be using too small variables for checking available space - if you have over 16G free then it discounts the first 16G. If this is the case, you could try putting data on the drive to take it below 16G free, then see whether this makes a difference to Map Loader.

What version of map loader and pc suite have you got installed? I am trying on xp and can't get it to work. I'm trying with Nokia Map Loader version 3. And it just says waiting for phone,

Re: Nokia Map Loader

OK, so it works fine when using the Nokia Map Loader in XP. Make sure its in Mass Storage Mode, and then download the maps you want (deleting original map data from device).
When you open up ovi maps, it WILL download data but I think thats related to AGPS because you can VERY QUICKLY scroll across the land mass (in my case the entire UK) and it will already be rendered (even if you zoom right the way in). I'm thinking that even with a fast wi-fi network, you would notice a slight delay before the data was downloaded and rendered but in this case there is no delay and the maps are rendered fine.

cardiff-blues 2009-12-16 18:18

Re: Nokia Map Loader

Thanks Dredd - it worked. All we need now is a decent navigation app with voice guidance and step by step. I presume we have to wait for something like sygic or something. Or are there other alternatives out there?

Remove the micro sd card from your phone, and put it on mass storage mode.

Re: Nokia Map Loader

just curious... kinda off topic but can the gps position be locked on if you didn't input a destination? I can't get it to follow the red dot unless i type a destination...

Re: Nokia Map Loader

I am using the same version of maploader but on vista, every time i run it with the n900 connected in mass storage mode it says

You have vonnected at least one phone in mass storage mode, reconnect your phone and select pc suite mode.

So i can not download the maps.

I've used Jaffa's instructions.

Interestingly, if you compare the files that already exist when overwriting with the ones from the downloaded ZIPs, quite a few of them appear to be the same (at least size-wise) whilst a few other are much bigger (I tried that with Switzerland and my phone was bought in the UK).

Re: Nokia Map Loader

I can confirm that the maps loader in mass storage mode does not work on Vista and works on XP.

Re: Nokia Map Loader

If you have Vista you can use Virtual PC 2007 and virtual drive image.

If you have Windows 7 you can use Windows XP Mode.

With both methods you will probably need to install Net Framework 3.0 on your virtual Windows XP.

Yeah, Map Loader Works for me in a XP Virtual Machine, and I had to install Net Framework 3.0.

Thanks!!

here simple fix, just copy this file to the root of your memory card then map loader will detect your phone.

This is from my N95 8GB. YOU need to remove .zip extension first though as I cant upload files without extensions

you DONT open it or extract it, just rename it and remove the .zip at the end of the filenamee, in windows you will need to make sure file extenstions are showing by going to the folder options menu.

I want to confirm, you put the qf file onto the sd card of the n900, and use it in PC Suite mode right? The file is named qf, not .qf, and not in mass storage mode? What's the explanation for why this works?

I have an n79, so I can copy the qf file off that phone to my n900 too right?

Thanks in advance, it will really help things to work with win 7 64-bit.
