powertop for fremantle

Powertop was not installed on my n900 by default, nor can I find it in the tools repository as described in the extras-testing wiki page. I am running 'apt-get install powertop' as root . How do I install it?

Re: powertop for fremantle

I have built a deb for Maemo 5, and I'll try to get it into Extras-devel. The build queue is very long at the moment so it may be several hours before it is available.

Re: powertop for fremantle

unfortunately there already is a powertop in a closed Nokia repo. I'll ask a Nokia rep to see about getting it added properly.

Re: powertop for fremantle

It's built-in, actually, just not in user's path.

Re: powertop for fremantle

Are you sure it hasn't been removed in the retail version? "find" can't find it, unless the name has been changed.

Hi,

powertop is not on the device and you cannot find it in a repository. There are some issues, but it might be that it will be added later on. I will keep you up-to-date on this.

Cheers Daniel

It's not contained in the USA image. I've pinged a Nokia rep, but I imagine I'll have to create a bug report for it.

Issues? I have the official 1.11 off of lesswatts.org installed on my N900 with the USA firmware. It works fine. I made a deb with the Maemo 5 SDK and SFTP'd it to my device.

It's not present in the community-testing 51-1 image either :-(

that's a bummer. This is a must-have tool for my extras-testing.

I'm not sure this is the same powertop as the lesswats.org one...

shadowjk 2010-01-04 09:24

Re: powertop for fremantle

Yeah, does the lesswatts.org one break up SOC power states into core, neon, sgx, iva and so on, with off/ret/ina/on percentages?

Anyone willing to repackage the nokia version via dpkg-repack ?

I already did, but I cannot put it in Maemo Extras. We would have to rename it. The build system will not allow another "powertop" named app in the Maemo repos.

DaSilva 2010-01-06 07:47

Re: powertop for fremantle

I have tested the powertop version from Nokia (/sbin/powertop) and it could be better.
Wouldn't it be possible to create a new .deb for the lesswatts.org version called powertop-lw or something like that?

Link to the deb? :)

Can we get this in the repos or at least a link to the deb - it would be darn helpful.

If anyone is interested, here is the powertop binary extracted from RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin

Hopefully this will save some people from the tedious process of downloading a 140MB file, then extracting it, then using nandsim to mount the ubifs partion, all to get a 22kb file :)

Since powertop is under the GPL, I assume posting this is fine...

Thank you for posting the executable. I am able to copy it to my /usr/bin and run it as it were installed.

When I start the process, I get "status: Unknown job: pmtrackerdaemon". Is that common?

Could some guru explain how to enable hpet and config_no_hz or why that would be a bad idea. I got those as recommended suggestions in PowerTOP.

Uh? The N900 doesn't have HPET (surely) and already uses config_no_hz (didn't check but 99,9% sure).

Thanks.. guess PowerTOP are more for intel chips than armel.. just wanted to know.

Re: powertop for fremantle

You're using the lesswatts.org powertop. The one that came with original n900 firmware release is different.

Is this the only source of powertop?
Is it somewhere in the repositories or as *.deb file?

Didn't find anything at maemo.org or in the Internet.
