Step by step guide to use VNC viewer.

I am hoping users of VNC view will be able to post a simple step by step guide to get VNC viewer working. I believe most poeple's difficulty comes at the connecting stage, especially for those with complex router set-ups. I am aware there are a couple of threads on this but none with detailed step by step.

Could someone please post a step by step guide to get VNC working?

For me in particular here are my details (and hence why i think its difficult to connect):
> I want to connect to my PC which runs Vista from my N900
> My internet comes into a small wired router, then by cable to to others before reaching my computer.
> I want to be able to connect from my N900 with both WiFi and mobile internet ideally.

Thanks in advance :D

Re: Step by step guide to use VNC viewer.

The steps are:

1) Set up a VNC server on your Home PC
2) Allow Access through you Router and possibly your firewalla

3) Make sure you can connect to your router from outside you network. You need a static IP address for this (think of it as your networks postal address), or a free service like dyndns.

********

1) http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/tig...ick_guide.html

2) http://www.tightvnc.com/faq.php#vista

3) The same as 1

Re: Step by step guide to use VNC viewer.

- Install VNC server on the Vista. make sure it runs. Telnet localhost 5900, make sure you get a link. Remember the local IP, if you are behind router, it'll probably 192.168.something, maybe 10.something. Type "ipconfig" in Command Prompt to get local IP.

- Make sure the server uses VNC password auth

- Link the phone, start the viewer. Phone should have an 192.168.somethign IP (You can check from terminal or via installable applet)

- Connect to to the said Vista _Local_ IP and provide password.

---

If your phone and your router are not on the same side of the router, then you need port forwarding. You need to tell the router to fix your PC IP (e.g., always use 192.168.1.2), then tell it to forward ports 5900 and 5800 from the internet to 192.168.1.2. You need to read the manual, and admin access to the router.

Then the phone links to your internet (exterior) IP, not the 192.168, but the one you get from whatsmyip.org. Note that if your ISP uses NAT to get you Internet, you're cooked.

The guide has nothing to do with VNC and all to do with networking. I suggest you use a PC to debug VNC, then apply settings on phone. Always debug one issue at a time.

Re: Step by step guide to use VNC viewer.

I followed the video tutorial but with my n900, and the N900 still says Authentication to VNC server failed. Any suggestions?

Im connecting via WiFi to a computer that is using the same router, but my comp has a wired connection to it.

also if i hover over the VNC icon in my system tray it says not accepting connections, is this normal?
:(

if you are under ur own network (wi-fi) then ur ipaddress (command prompt, and type in ipconfig, u'll get it there) if you are using your tmobile 3g or any other internet then go to "whatsmyip.org" and get the number from there. worked for me.

EDIT: credit goes to NDI for this info.!!!

"VNC Server appears to be behind a NAT router with IP address xx.xxx.xxx.xx. You will need to configure that router to forward port 5900 to this computer before you can connect to VNC Server over the Internet." i got this error when i run a test on vnc viewer on my laptop...

what is this means?

not too sure about NAT router, i have linksys router, and i go to my router settings, and port forward ports 5800, and 5900 for my ip address in my router, and it shud work after that.

P.S, earlier in the thread, somebody mention something about NAT routers, i think it might not work with NAT routers, not sure though!

i cant seem to get it to work. i can connect from wifi but not from my mobile carrier, i've forwarded the port, disabled all firewall, use the external ip but still unable to connect.

i tried pinging my computer also and that didnt work either. so is it my mobile network? i'm positive i got my external ip right.

how would you know if your isp uses nat. i think it uses nat for their voip service though.

Most common situation, may not apply to your case, when winPC reboot, it changed your local address, the 192.168.1.xxx. Recheck to make sure the local ip address remains valid.

2nd most common problem, are you using any port? For example, rdesktop default to 3389, any port will have to be specified. Similar info, thread #14 and http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=23932, and http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=9407.

No way!

How well does that work?

I take it that you have to jailbreak the Iphone's device?

Re: Step by step guide to use VNC viewer.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but is there a way to ping a host via n900? I understand that my IP address is dynamic, so being able to ping on the road through my phone would be awesome.

I got it to work within my network, and outside, like a charm, but its the IP address changing that I want to figure out when I'm away from home and all I have is my phone.

Thanks in advance you guys!

Thanks for your help guys, i got it working!

But now i have a problem. I put it into fullscreen mode and i cant get out of it i.e. i cant get the top and bottom toolbars back because there is nothing to press. is there a shortcut to get out of fullscreen mode?

ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling but its still in full screen mode

EDIT: I figured It out. You press the volume rocker buttons

Re: Step by step guide to use VNC viewer.

One thing I find strange about VNC viewer is that when I connect, the screen on my N900 is blank until I click and drag the mouse, at which point things begin to 'fill in' under the area I drag over.. is that normal? Anything I can do to make it start with a full view of the remote screen?

Uprock415 2010-01-28 08:53

Re: Step by step guide to use VNC viewer.

Mine does the same. Its weird. Does this occur when you are in you home network, or outside?

You can use ping from X terminal (as root) if that's what you're after. If you're worried about IP address changes, it sounds more like you should be looking into a dynamic DNS provider (e.g. dyndns.com).

This isn't normal, no - which OS and VNC server are you using?

I'm using OS X 10.6.2 with its built-in VNC function.

Ah - that explains it then. The OS X built-in VNC server is broken - Vine server is an alternative that I've heard recommended.

I'm a noob when it comes to Xterminal. What do you type in to do this?
