Re: is there wifi tethering?

Not quite sure what you mean by "wifi tether" - if you mean connect to the N900 over wifi and go out through the cell internet connection, then: not yet. See: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=34380

The default N900 kernel is crippled by having no usable iptables for getting it to do NAT (masquerading, as it's sometimes called) :(

Re: is there wifi tethering?

actually with the software suite all you have to do is click like 2 buttons(dont have it in front of me) and it sets it up for you

Re: is there wifi tethering?

llamastyle: does that actually work? (you connect to the N900 over WiFi (not bluetooth or usb) and you can connect out to the internet over the N900's 3G?)

I would love to see something like WMwifirouter had it on all my winmo phones and it is a life saver when needing to use your laptop on the good with the unlimited data plan you playing for hopefully in a few months we shall see an app like that

Re: is there wifi tethering?

Yes, it is possible with mobilehotspot:
https://garage.maemo.org/projects/mobilehotspot/
I believe it is in extras testing. Yes it requires custom kernel but as this being N900 that is as simple as installing it through package manager and rebooting the device.

edit: Remember to turn off all connections before starting this app.

Re: is there wifi tethering?

With Ubuntu you can broadcast you wifi, nevermind tethering, I'm surfing, sshing around my ubase, so geeky!

Re: is there wifi tethering?

This is what I want to do. I have an iPad without 3g. I want to use N900 (which of course got 3g) to provide internet to the iPad. Is that possible in a way?

Re: is there wifi tethering?

Should be possible with Joiku Hotspot or Mobile Hotspot. Mobile Hotspot creates Ad-hoc wireless network, so the only question is, if iPad can see it.

I'm using Mobile Hotspot 0.3.4 (from extras-testing) to connect my laptop. There is also version 0.3.5 which is in extras-devel, but this one doesn't work for me.

I've used both of them and my iPod can see the network and I'm guessing it would work with iPad too..

Re: is there wifi tethering?

I could easily install mobile hotspot with the special kernel, but my camera did not work any more. Had to uninstall the kernel.

Is there a way to get mobile hot-spot AND camera working ?

kolos 2011-06-13 22:04

Re: is there wifi tethering?

phpman, what special kernel? Do you think one of enhanced kernels for power users (v42, v46 or v47)? With these kernels camera works.

kolos 2011-06-13 22:09

Re: is there wifi tethering?

crabsody, if you are going to install Mobile Hotspot, you will need first to install enhanced kernel.

New attempt with v47.

When opening the camera, I see a little while the camera app, then it crashes with "Operation failed".

So, I cannot get at the same time wifi tethering AND camera.

Do you have installed fcam-drivers and which version?

What you get, if you execute this in xterminal?

Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-cache policy fcam-drivers

Re: is there wifi tethering?

I'm pretty sure this is a known problem that is fixable by reinstalling the drivers. I don't have access to my favorites now, but on the v46 thread this was mentionated lots of times.

You could use joikuspot or this:

[HOWTO] N900 WiFi Hotspot (shell script version)

Hotshot 2011-06-15 01:13

Re: is there wifi tethering?

Might give mobile hotspot a go since I'm using the kernel power v47 and updated the fcam drivers and the cam is working now. So might be worth a shot since joikuspot disappeared off my phone after I updated to PR 1.3

Thanks, it works now.

apt-cached answered
installed 1.0.6-something
candidate 1.0.7-2

I uninstalled blessn900 and fcam-drivers
Now, I get
installed (none)
candidate 1.0.7-2

I don't know how-to install 1.0.7. Probably it is useful for blessn900.

For the first time, I can share my connexion and take a picture.

If you have enabled extras-devel repository in App manager, then just type this in xtreminal:

Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get install fcam-drivers
