Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
Is there anybody who knows how to setup jabber in N900.
I want to use windows live messenger through it. I have found PSI client for maemo but there is no information such as for which version that PSI client would work? Also Do I really need it installed on N900 or not? Thanks in Advance. |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
Jabber is supported by the N900 out of the box . You dont need to install anything .
Setting --> My Voip and IM accounts ---> New and select Jabber |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
go to "Settings", then select "VOIP and IM accounts" then res thenew button and select Jabber and fill in the appropriate details

Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
But how is "Windows live messenger" related to Jabber?! Or were those two different questions?

Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
You can setup a jabber aco**** with any server that supports it... and they interconnect... if you have a gmail account you can use gtalk instead... it's also jabber under the hood.
To get MSN support working through jabber look up: howto setup MSN transport in jabber. And I think you'll need to us a more advanced client on your desktop... like psi or gajim to find it, configure it and register it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QouuPHWqBg Hope it helps. |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
You can use some jabber servers to connect to MSN/AOL etc. accounts, provided the server supports it.
The client needs to support connecting to these services on the jabber server too. PSI does support this, but I can't see how to do it in the native client on n900 either. |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
i use the "account-butterfly-plugin" from extras-devel to connect to MSN, and it works well...
the usual disclaimer applies, of course! |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
On your PC, create a jabber account with PSI
Then, connect to your msn account via your new jabber account (there is a "gateway" option somewhere, I don't remember exactly). The thing is that when you create your jabber account, you have to choose a jabber server, and they don't all allow to connect to your msn account. I chose "binaryfreedom.info" and it works. You should see all your msn contact appear in PSI Then, just connect to your jabber account on the N900, and it works :) |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
You can use any jabber server. Transports are ussually free-for-all. It's called "Service discovery".
Some other usefull services: MSN transport ICQ transport Y! transport gadu-gadu transport Mail transport - this allows receiving notifications and full plaintext mails and also sending them out To get a transport you basically need to search for a server that has it. Some do some don't. But you don't need to be using the same server. |

Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
Erm... try disabeling force old ssl. Resource usually isn't the server but the client you are using... Since you can have multiple clients and people can generally pick the one to send to. Or you can even assign priorities to each resource.

Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
ok guys i finally got it. i did nothing extra. i just tried to connect after two days and it connected instantly. what seems to be the reason is propagation of my id on all the jabber servers. once my id is sychronized i got connected.
thank you all guys for the help. |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
I got it to work using binaryfreedom, do you think this would use less battery than say the plugins such as haze/butterfly?
Do you get spam msgs from random accounts or does it only allow msgs from ppl on ur contact list? |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
I have a question regarding transport gateways.
I have a jabber account a one of the Jabber servers. Via a desktop client added the msn gateway. On the Jabber account setup on the N900 the only way I could get msn contacts to show up for the first time was by connecting to server msn.[someJabberServer.blah] Should this be the case or should I be able to just put the base Jabber server name [someJabberServer.blah] and depending what transports/gateways I have registered all contacts show automatically? |

Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
just for anyone looking for an update, i had no luck with the server binaryfreedom.info . a quick search on jabber servers told me that binaryfreedom's MSN servers were down for a bit.
i went through a few, and recommend jabber.sk server. little downtime and it loads my MSN contacts on jabber beautifully. using jabber instead of pidgin or haze hopefully reduces battery usage, i'll be monitoring and will report back! |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
Neko.im works good for me.

Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
Interesting thought here -- would consolidating IM accounts via XMPP (jabber) be significantly more power efficient than independent clients?
There was talk elsewhere of one issue being with 3G data that once the radio is on it needs to stay on for 5-10s. If all the IM clients are unsynchronized this could lead to heavy power usage? So if either - XMPP provided an element of aggregation making the data exchange a little less frequent OR - data access was synchronized then power consumption might improve |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
I've found jabber to be the most power efficient way to get msn etc, on the N900.
The only thing driving me nuts is all the spam messages, is there any way to only receive messages from people on ur contact list when using jabber? |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
Sorry to jump in here when you're all talking about MSN, but i was hoping someone could help me.
Can I set up my Yahoo account on my N900 through Jabber? I tried to set it up by putting my username and password in, but is constantly set to "Not signed in". I've never ever used Jabber before, so if someone can give me step-by-step instructions, that would be amazing. |
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
why do you need jabber for yahoo ?
|
Re: Jabber: Any body knows how to setup jabber?
Because Yahoo isn't listed as one of the services under the "VoIP and IM accounts" tab, and I've been having trouble with Pidgin.
Is there some other way to get Yahoo (Y!M, I mean) on my N900? |
