Is The N900 That Great?
I know that it sounds pretty cool and I don't have one, so i was wondering if it is that great considering the fact that there aren't many downloads for and that no cell phone company has service for it (i think, but I may be wrong). Does what it does really outweigh that?
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
Yup it sure does
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
It's a geek phone, it wasn't really for the mass market.
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
It is artificially intelligent. It makes phone calls on it's own.
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
It WAS great for the first week I had it, fast, relitevly bug free etc. and now it's starting to go down hill. I've had laggy experiances, media player playing up, web seems to not be functioning very good aswell as random internal error web closed messages and some more problems i cba thinking about at 1 am lol
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
So, basically, it has too many problems right now for it to be that great?
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
Yes. Next question.

Never have such problems N900 wasn't design for the mass market, hence not consider it as a market leader, hint the price tag |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
My N900 is working just fine.
There are plenty of tweaks I could suggest, but others have done so before me. I suspect things will get polished over time. The beauty of this platform is not found in some childish Christmas-fantasy of having everything perfectly laid out for you on day 1...but in being part of a synergistic platform/community ecosystem that encourages open-source innovation and initiative. This is OUR technology to make work the way WE want it to. |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
user error, lol. Good one.

Re: Is The N900 That Great?
Check the tag that this topic has o_O
I wake up with N900, I go to bed with my N900. My wife is jealous. |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
N900 is the best device I have ever owned, and I have owned a lot. Just putting in my .02 cents.
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
well it's great if compared to my phone - the mighty nokia 6151. Still, getting the n900 in 2 da... oh tomorrow.
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
i didnt own my n900 yet.
but i do like it. I think when i drop my old phone off the 11th floor where i live i have owned that one. maybe ill own my n900 in a few years when a new one is out. until then, no, its working pretty well, maybe a little too well to be owned yet. |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
I feel the love
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
ten bucks says half of the people having issues are using buggy packages from extras-testing or extras-devel and dont realize the issue.
it really is a great device |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
Ok, mixed feelings... but just wondering, do cell phone carriers carry the N900, or even sell it?
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
In the US, NO!! In the UK, I am not too sure, my guess is probably no for now. But that may change...
Honestly speaking, no phone is perfect or without fault. I like the N900. I may not use it to its full capacity, but it suits my needs for internet, skype, applications, and the like..every other thing is a bonus in my opinion...the interface is also nice.. |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
so, if you can't use it as a phone, then what good does it do? What can it do?
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
It can be used as a phone. A basic one if you will..with not too many options, but it does the job...again, its a matter of preference.
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
Still, if you can't get phone service with it, then it wouldn't work as a phone and then what? I still dont see what's so great.

Re: Is The N900 That Great?
No you're missing the point. Cell providers do not sell it. The device works just fine on T-Mobile's 3G network. It makes phones calls and browses the internet and everything else you would expect from a cell phone.
The reason people say the phone features are lacking is not because it doesn't get service... its because little things like: Unable to change ring tone per contact Call log doesn't show the number a contact called from You can't buy it for $150 and sign a 2-year contract... That kind of stuff... |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
oh, i see. I still think based on what everyone has said, that it wasn't ready to go out when it did. I have also read about a lot of problems that people are having with it.
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
Yes there are people having problems with some phones, but mind you, other phones are working just fine. And those who have excellent phones may not sign on here to talk about it. So keep that in mind.

Re: Is The N900 That Great?
If you want an "Iphone experience" move on and wait for the next model.
I should add. I have owned an iphone (sold it), and currently own the N900. I love it and haven't had any of the issues a lot of people on here have. The unhappy are always the most vocal, and the N900 has fan boys too whether they admit it or not. I don't take any sides and try to have a non-bias opinion. It's not as "fluid" as the iphone. It doesn't have the apps and developer following either. There are still kinks to iron out and the apps that have been created aren't as "pretty" as the Iphone apps. You have to ask yourself, "what do I want to use this for?" If you want a simple device to listen to music, surf the net, etc. maybe the Iphone/Palm Pre/Droid is the right way for you. If you want a device that is totally open, well, get the n900. If you want a lighter phone, don't get the n900. If you want a better camera, get the Sony Satio, etc... There is NO phone that is 100% the answer for everyone. Some people like SUVs, that doesn't mean cars are bad. Take the top 2 - 3 things you want to do and get the phone that best fits those 2 - 3 things. Music, Camera, Browser = Satio...Only music, 5800...open platform, etc. N900. "Apps" = Iphone... Like google? Buy a droid. |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
What everyone is trying to say is that every phone or device has problems when it is first out. The iPhone did not start it's move to cell phone dominancy with a clean slate. There were plenty of bumps along the road.
The reason the N900 has lacking cell phone features is that nokia is not advertising it as a phone.. it's a "mobile computer" or "internet tablet" that happens to work on cell phone networks. Although, I suspect the Cell Phone features will mature over time with firmware updates. |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
true. So the next thing to ask is whether it is worth the price for what it does. I don't know what the exact price is, but i know that it is a lot of money.
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
It entirely depends on what you are after. It can do a great number of things thanks to it's Linux heritage (a non-bastardized linux like android) - and is very highly customizable thanks to that. So if you're looking for something with full Flash support, has a growing number of apps, and works more like a computer than a phone.. then it's excellent.
If you want an iPhone that's not an iPhone - you probably need to looking at androids. |
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
It is alot of money, depending on how you look at it...if you buy into a 2 year contract, you probably end up paying more, just because you are tied down, and they make you pay for data and things like that....considering you pay like 560-600 for the phone you are free to use it any which way you like. Buy a sim card and use the phone capabilities or just use wifi and use it as an internet tablet...its like a mini laptop in your hands...

Re: Is The N900 That Great?
now i'm wondering, besides the phone part, is there anything hardware or software related that makes it better than the N810?
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
The N900's hardware is significantly better from what I've read. And the software is supposedly better as well. I'm not exactly sure what the major differences in Maemo 5 and Maemo 4 are tho.
|
Re: Is The N900 That Great?
considering that i got the my N810 for about a third the price, and that I already have a phone, what would make me want to buy it.
