Trasmit phone calls over FM Radio

Hello there,

Loving my N900 so far, it's an amazing device, theres something i'd love to be able to do to make it even better though.

I often use the FM transmitter to listen to music whilst in the car, however when I get a phone call it'll play my ringtone through the car speakers but not the voice once the call is connected.

This is a shame because it would be the perfect car handsfree set up. Is there a setting to make this work? I haven't found one which leads me to my next question, is there an application which could do this or would it be possible for one to be made?

Thanks,
Loz.

Have you considered privacy issue? Someone standing next to you in a traffic jam could hear your caller.

The FM transmitter on the N900 is no where near strong enough for it to be picked up a car away, if the device is in the back of the car my radio won't pick anything up, besides anyway i have no problems with a potential privacy leak. I'd love to have this feature.

I'm not sure whether there's an exception for low-powered transmitters, but if I remember correctly the FCC prohibits using a regulated service over another regulated service (or something along those lines-been a while since I took my amateur radio tests) in the US. There shouldn't be a technical limitation, but it may be disabled in the firmware for legal reasons.

It would probably be easier to just get a head unit that has bluetooth capabilities.

I have the proper Nokia charger and the FM transmitter is unuseable when charging.

Sounds like a perfect app for "N900 hacking tools"

Re: Trasmit phone calls over FM Radio

bumb and since many gps devices like tomtom do this- you connecto it with bluetooth and then it connects to radio, i don't see any problem using phone to make calls trough radio. This would be very good handsfree application. Maybe you could tick on/off if you want call to be made with radio on. So anyone up for the task?

the fm signal always drops when you plug the charger in. i just use the "fmboost" app to bring the signal back

I agree that phone over fm would be a nice option for hands free use. Actually, the car next to you would only hear the person on the far end of the call. I think they already have an after market product that does this called Magic Jack but it would be nice if it was built in since the capabilities of the phone are there already.

its not magic jack, its some other jack, only works with 2.5mm headphone jacks. majicjack is the voip usb dongle.
i really wish someone will make this, since poor people like me dont have a fancy car with bluetooth. one who feels unsecure and really care about privacy yhey just not need to download the app.

I really wish that...

it should be work as there is built in FM transmitter, and for the privacy, it is our issue, and we can take care of it :D

my co-worker was bluffing with his iphone and was mentioning he could also connect his iphone to the radio and listen to music. Then came I and mentioned my n900's FM-transmitter, my manager was surprised and asked me about phone calls. I told him currently only streaming of music is possible. It would be cool if someone found a workaround to this.

If it is too far from radio it wont work. so you will have to find a ideal position for it to work.

I miss this feature since I changed my handset to 900, previous device which would connect through wire only but allowed to relay phone sound through the radio/DVD player
