[Under consideration] Swype input for N900

Lots of discussions going on there, but no actual brainstorm. Swype makes much sense for N900's single touch screen and since Nokia puts money into Swype, why not to ask and hope to get it for N900 before the next multi-touch Maemo device comes out.

Swype

Anyone know when/if this will be availble for the likes of N900 users?

Swype for Maemo comes up in this thread, where NvyUs points out that Nokia has invested in Swype.

how do you actually vote, do I need to register again under the brainstorm section ?

Re: [sandbox] Swype input for N900

There was something very similar to this implemented for the earlier n8xx tablets and I think I was the most devoted to it -- I persisted in using it and advocating it for weeks after anyone else. But eventually I gave up. It was just too slow compared to regular keyboard input.

Re: [Under consideration] Swype input for N900

Here's a more radical approach that may be cool to test out on the maemo:

See: http://mrl.nyu.edu/~perlin/demos/quikwriting.html

and

http://www.nongnu.org/qwo/

I have also toyed with the idea of using shorthand (like what was popular in the beginning of the 19th century with pencil and paper) as an input method.

I don't know about Swype (taking into account what geneven just said), but what about Dasher?

Regarding touch input methods I think you guys are a little overenthusiastic.

So far the keyboard on N900 is beyond great. I say this should be postponed for Maemo6 and if the rumor of it not having a keyboard is true, this would be most relevant.

I have used it on a Motorola Droid and it is very useful.

Motorola Cliq XT for TMobile US has Swype in it. Pretty cool tech.

i think it would be a great addition to maemo, especially in portrait mode.

I don't think this would work very well with the resistive screen

[REQUEST] Swype input method for maemo

A virtual keyboard for N900 in which we could write using swype method from android. Open sourced maemo can give us a nice implementation for input.

Re: [REQUEST] Swype input method for maemo

Not to put a dampener on this, but from experience, it is not going to be easy.

Still, interested people can look into some of the work done for portrait-keyboard: http://gitorious.org/hildon-portrait-keyboard

Collaboration welcome.

Swype on N900. Is it possible?

Would it be possible to have Swype on Nokia N900?

Venemo 2010-06-29 08:39

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

Yes, as soon as someone writes the necessary Hildon Input Method stuff, it can be possible.

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

This would be great. I wonder if it is difficult to do that for someone with programming skills?

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

we only need a developer with the proper knowledge and initiative :D i am asking too much?

fw190 2010-06-29 13:03

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

Well I'm not a developer and my first contact with linux is N900. That is why I'm asking :)

You could ask the company

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

go to the swype forums ( click me ), search for "maemo" and vote for all threads that come up! or create new threads. anything to get the developers attention.

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

I wrote to the company but got no answer and gave up the whole thing but I used Your link and voted for it. Thank's for the tip.

i just saw only 1 voteable thread comes up, because the other is "completed".

i dont have an account over there, but someone should make a new thread! we should organize ourselves and vote this new thread up so they know we are serious about it! most posts in the existing thread are 7 or 8 month old... if nothing happens, we're not getting swype, i guess.

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

Maybe if more people would vote it could be done. The registration is easy. When you tap the vote button you can register in a few seconds by typing your mail and that is it.

Re: Swype on N900. Is it possible?

already voted on that android has another keyboard like swype called slideit it was free in the android market you'd probably be better asking them

Just spotted Swype released on Nokia Beta Labs for selected S60v5 handsets ; http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian/

I miss HWR from UIQ. :(
