Give me a reason not to sell 810

I was very happy when i bought the nokia N810.I study how to use it very long time.
But now,the nokia company release the new one ,N900 and it's new os maemo5.The maemo 5 is not support n810,so new software is not support n810 ,too.
I still like n810,but i have no reason to keep it.
I want to sell it.

Re: Give me a reason not to sell 810

The choice is of course yours... Mer is supposed to be picking up to keep the N810 active and getting new software.. however I do not know what work has been done on it recently. It was usable last time I used it - however I removed the Mer interface and just ran a full debian+LXDE.

If you want to sell the N810 and get the N900, you will likely not be disappointed. Likewise, though, if you enjoy your N810 now theres no reason you can't keep it. There are still developers for the N810 and if you feel you are missing some software you can put up a request for it.

If you plan to just sell it.. well - some device is better than no device, is it not?

Hate these threads.
Sell a device, buy a device whatever.. we don't gain/lose anything either way so it doesn't concern us
do whatever you want

I don't really see the point of this topic but if you want an N900 than you should still have reason to keep your N810. Mer(hopefully) will keep the N810 alive for a while longer and remember. The N810 has a bigger screen than the N900 and I really don't see the point in selling it unless your desperate for cash.

Sell it if you want but you won't get a ton of money for it and it still has some advantages over the N900. But based on how little info was given I don't think this is a really serious topic.

If you sell it, don't expect to get that much money back from your original investment.

I'm personally keeping mine. Larger screen than the N900, Tear for a browser, and Flash Player 9 at least... so I'm good for a tad bit longer.

I will use mine to follow and contribute to the Mer project as open-source is what took me here in the first place...

Mind if I give you more than "a reason"?

4.3 in screen
working kick stand
Dpad

Re: Give me a reason not to sell 810

What keeps it for me is Maemo Mapper with a Nokia designed vehicle mount... and it can now tether to the N900's 3G connection. Mine hasn't left the car since I got the N900 but it is what I use while in the car instead of the N900. :)

I might even add Carman now that my N810 has a single purpose.

And best of all..

Last night I wanted to watch TV (episodes I had on the N900). I plugged the N900 into the TV and used my n800 to talk to my girlfriend using Pidgin while laying in my bed (best thing after a day of work).

Then I had an idea (for next time). I could then use the n800 to remote control the N900! That way I could delete episodes as I watched them and wouldn't have to keep getting up every 40-50 minutes to delete the episode I watched. Only problem is my n800's battery is pretty much dead (part of the reason why I got the N900). Since the n800's battery barely lasts an hour under heavy usage.

Old technology doesn't have to get obselete. It just gets repurposed. Many of the things I did on the n800 are now shifted to the N900 (listening to podcasts for example). But I still use my n800 at home. Plug the N900 to charge at home, switch to my n800. :D

I just hope Mer kicks off soon. Everyone seems to be focused on the N900 and the N810 lately has seemed a little abandoned. lets just hope it gets to the point where it can be used on a daily basis.

I dont think the mer project is focused too heavily on the n8xx. They seem to be supporting alot of different devices like the smartq5 ect. Last time i was in the chat room people were saying the latest builds of mer were pretty much unusable on the n8xx.. Hopefully us n8xx users will be able to use mer and not have to buy new hardware to do so. There'
s no way id buy a smartq5 to use mer! Id get an n900 if it came down to it.

i would hope you sell it as soon as possible! i belongs in the hands of someone who has use for it. besides, it might bring the price down a few pennies, should i ever need a replacement.

I did this a long time ago. Currently my N810 has stock diablo on it as it got shelved for sometime.

You can read what I was able to accomplish using Mer as a base a while go, however:
here (way outdated setup procedures)
here
here
and here

I have not tried the newer Mer's yet. Don't know if anything significant has changed. Theoretically, as long as it's still using a Debian/Ubuntu base.. the same thing could be accomplished still by removing and adding the appropriate packages as I did.

There also existed several threads here on t.m.o on getting LXDE and GDM/Gnome setup and configured on the N810.

It's old and its an antique object lol. Selling it won't make much different. You would only end up with an extra 80 bucks in your pocket and it will be gone in just a few minutes of fun.

Ah, ok, I thought it was something different.
I actually tried lxde on mer at the time and made some modifications to the wiki.

try installing Firefox, and browser-switchboard to make it the default browser.

It has brought browsing right up to date on my N810, seems to be quicker than the default browser, and has tabs, location detection for google maps etc, and can sync passwords and bookmarks with firefox on a PC via weave.

I have also installed the frediablo theme to make diablo look a bit more like Maemo5. The dark theme alone gives it a fresher feel.
