Can't download maps to N900.
 

So does anyone else have this problem?

I choose " Map Application " from the Nokia PC Suite and it redirects me to the nokia hompage where I can download software for map downloading. The problem is that N900 isn't listed on that page.

Doesn't it work the same way as it does on the other phones, like my N900 that the program starts and you can choose maps to download?

The other phones use a different version of Ovi maps. I know, this is a huge bummer. It seems that the N900 and the Symbian phones use the same underlying map files, so this should be added on later. But, I could be wrong.

I saw that link and couldn't figure it out. The crucial missing information is:

* Unzip the downloaded map files and drop them into the appropriate folders on your memory card.

Um... what downloaded map files?

I'd prefer to do this in Linux, but will of course boot into the hated Windows if I am forced to. :)

I used the that webpage last week and it worked for me. You have to download a zip file, USA is ~1.1 GB, and unzip it while keeping the folder structure. Then you can copy the files over to the cities/diskcache folder on the n900. I did it on debian.

Um... okay, my question is where do I download this zip file from? I didn't see any links that looked like they were pointing to the right place.

If you scroll down it breaks it down by country. Then for the USA it breaks it down by state. Just right click and save them. I got the USA, MD, and VA myself.

For example, it looks like this on the website. You just right click whatever state you want (you can also download the entire USA as in the overview, not every road!).

I did something similar when I first loaded the page. It took me awhile to find the continental US. I was ready to start downloading individual states.

Hi everybody.

My name is Mauricio. I bought a wonderful N900. before this phone I had a nokia N95.

In N95 I downloaded 5 GB of nokia Maps in my Micro SD card of 8 GB. Normally when I wanted more space for music or videos I backed up the complete CITIES folder in my computer. And then after that I deleted the folder. The application nokia maps still worked. obviouslly without any information.

After I bought N900 I replaced the CITIES folder with my N95 back up folder... And now the application doesn't work!!!!

The first idea is to get the original CITIES folder but I don't know other people in my country (Ecuador) with an N900. So if
you have the original CITIES folder please email me and share the address I can download or please email me to latinmau@yahoo.com.

First delete the Cities/diskcache folder again. Start up Ovi Maps and close it down again, this should make sure that the basic file structure is in place.

Then go to http://handphone-solution.blogspot.c...0-without.html and download the map set you want to the PC and unzip it. Connect the N900 in mass storage mode and copy over the maps to the Cities/diskcache folder.

I downloaded Bulgaria's map from that page. It works But it is very very poor :(

ok.....I did the first part... and the application opened. but the screen is only yellow. the + and - buttons seems the same thing.. nothing... is this normal?.. I' going to the second part.. download the maps... I hope this will improve the situation... I was since the first time expecting to see the entire planet like my old N95...

the other question... for proceding with the second part is..
what is mass storage mode... is any special thing?.. what do I need to do for getting this mode?

my phone status bar has 2.5 number... is this the 3.5 G net? or is only the GSM net... because I read in some page this is not 3.5 G

oh dear lord. Maps on this device is completely different from symbian one :| And for future: Never ever overwrite something before making backup.

I do not know why there should be any difference between city folders on n900s. Actually maps on this device downloads even street names from online when doing search.

Sidenote:
I would not use maps on this device after using maps 3.0. Please wait :| It will drive you probably mad. But YMMV.

When you connect the N900 to a PC with the USB cable it asks whether to connect in Mass storage mode, PC Suite mode or for charging only.

It is quite obviously not 3.5G, but rather EDGE which is also known as 2.5G. I'm not sure what this has to do with your questions above, though?

PC suite is the mode where you can use the phone as a modem and sync it with the computer.

If you start it in MASS STORAGE mode then it will act like a pendrive.

Yes. But you can't really use Ovi Maps (for maemo) offline because it needs to go online to do searches (and routing probably).
