Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

Since vBulletin doesn't support ignoring threads started by proven trolls, here is a simple Greasemonkey script to get you rid of such threads on talk.maemo.org: http://www.topflashers.com/maemo/mis....maemo.user.js

That + user ignore in profile settings should get you rid of all those pesky trolls and attention whores.

Whenever a new troll arrive and just refuses to die, all you need is to edit the script and add troll's name to the comma-delimited list at the end of the script. OrangeBox is, obviously, added by default.

Cheers...

Should make the user list show up in a preferences setting so you don't have to modify the script directly :).

See, you can't win. I can always come back with a different name - if I wanted to. However, since I'm not a troll I will not come back should the majority of the users decide to petition the moderators to close my account.

Unfortunately, Greasemonkey does not allow adding GUI for the script editing, and I don't think I have enough time to write a fully-blown FF extension just to keep the pesky trolls in-check. Little text editing never hurt nobody ;)

Yes, and we could always edit the script - if we wanted to (*cough*).

zwer has thought this out. Hey, maybe it could be like Adblock Plus: Maybe we could set up "lists"...

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

Why is it so hard to go into the User CP, click on edit ignore list and add a username there?

It may not ignore the whole thread someone you don't care for posts in, but it will not display his/her post to you. Does almost the same thing your script as your script, which 90% of people here including myself don't know how to implement, or don't really have the need to implement it.

Some of you guys are way too sensitive. Seriously.

Er, because you can still see threads started by said person?

That One Guy 2009-12-24 22:32

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

Now you're nitpicking. Sure, you can see a thread started by a user on your ignore list, but you can't see what the user says in that thread.

I mean, do we need a "script" to tell us what threads we should not open? Are we that far gone that we can't use our 12 (in my case) brain cells to look at who made the thread, and pass it up?

It's more of a self-control thing.... when this thread keeps popping up on the "new post" screen and keeps popping up and keeps popping up.....

I... Just...Have...to...CLICK!!! :D

Especially those of us that try to keep our New Posts empty.

whats it like living under a bridge?

do you get upset when film makers portray you incorrectly? too much hair, not enough drool etc....
that would bug me too, for this i sincerelly apologise.

it must be hard being a troll.

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

You could eliminate most troll trash-talk by ignoring the threads posted in the "Competitors" category of the forum. You could hide all the threads posted in the "Competitors" category of the forum from New Posts if Solution #1 in this Brainstorm were implemented (which is why OrangeBox has cast the only vote against it):

http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...sign_for_2010/

So go there and vote for it:

I know what you mean, it's like a tooth ache. You know it's gonna hurt, but you keep touching it with your tongue, anyways. :D

I'm sorry. Are you calling me a troll? I must have either missed something, or you missed the point of my post. Which is it?

Make sure you're also blocking his IP address and also by means of other signatures

easier solution: stop spamming the forum. you started 50 threads in 13 days. many of your postings would have fit in existings threads ...

That One Guy 2009-12-25 00:07

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

@ vins Problem with blocking IP addresses is, any half-wit can jump on a proxy server.

And a lot of people are on dynamic IP addresses, so the Admins would have to filter a whole block of IP addresses, potentially causing other "productive" members to not be able to get on here.

There are a few other ways to ensure someone you've blocked stays away, but again, it's a matter of cleaning out cookies and changing IP addresses... along with a user name.

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

Yes, I just have realized that. Been a long time not working in IT. Then I think the solution is to just not let ourselves be irritated by those trolls. Giving option to other user the ability to ignore trolls won't help either. We ultimately need a constant vigilant mod.

That One Guy 2009-12-25 00:31

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

Fatalsaint put it best... It's a matter of self control.

Personally, I get a chuckle out of some users here who get their panties tied up in a knot over this guy. It's the Internet, guys! Grow a thicker skin. Unfortunately, most people on the Internet don't have this "thick skin" I speak of, so they create java scripts, (not picking on the OP directly), or just moan about the trolls they run across. Self control, guys. You don't like someone? Ignore them. Simple.

I bet if everyone ignored his posts for a couple of weeks, he'd just go away... and maybe come back under a new username, but who knows.

I mainly use use the Active Topics -list to keep up with TMO. You can't see who started the thread on that list. As I'm writing this, there are three topics started by this higly successfull attention whore on Active Topics -list

I'm getting pretty frustarated on wasting my time on crawling trough his brainfarts. Big thanks to OP.

It cleans the place up. There is value in that.

I still think some of you guys are a touch too... sensitive.

But eh... whatever floats your guys' boats, I suppose. To each his own and all that jazz.

I'm gonna go spend some time in the real world. I've about had enough of this teenager drama.

And all this is for what? To ignore people like me? I've preempted this effort by starting my own blog.

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

The script had one serious bug :o - it would remove threads where trolls were the ones to post last, it's fixed now so update your script, sirs.

Cheers...

is not a troll...... he is just not too handy by making 20 topics on one day. all with a statement instead of bringing something useful. dont flame the guy. he isnt intentionally harming anyone. pff.
add me on the list by default, you'll seriously be better off.

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

How about giving him a one-day waiting period between submitting a new thread and allowing him to finally approve it? That way, he has time to calm down and reconsider his tone and wording.

Re: Troll Anihilator for talk.maemo.org

There is a VB hack called "miserable user"...

When classed as miserable, a member suffers ;

1. Slow response (time delay) on every page (20 to 60 seconds default).
2. A chance they will get the "server busy" message (50% by default).
3. A chance that no search facilities will be available (75% by default).
4. A chance they will get redirected to another preset page (25% & homepage by default).
5. A chance they will simply get a blank page (25% by default).
6. Post flood limit increased by a defined factor (10 times by default).
7. If they get past all this okay, then they will be served up their proper page.

Note: All the above options are set in the vBulletin Options.

Quote:

To install this hack simply download the xml file to your pc and then import it into vbulletin as a product - then create your 'miserable users' usergroup and set the value of this group, and your preferred other settings, in the hacks settings area (vBulletin Oprions > Miserable Users). To make a member suffer just edit their profile to add them to the miserable users group (it will work as either the primary group or as a secondary group).

:)

Isn't it easier to simply set a limit on the number of posts/comments a user can make in a single day?

Before I've read it, I blamed overloaded maemo/garage servers for slow response, waiting for half an hour till a page will be load or refreshed is really a hassle. But turns out I was simply put into "miserable user" list shortly after registration. :o
