How to reset N900 - unable to install applications [SOLUTION FOUND]

[UPDATE - SOLUTION FOUND]
Hey guys,

Tried searching and posting in already present threads but no news coming that way.

Question: How can I completely reset the N900? Tried reinstalling firmware/formatting memory, but I'm still unable to reinstall apps like Bounce or Hermes. N900 downloads but later says "unable to install".

This was after a bad app update where:

N900 said there was an update for an app so I updated it (was in extras testing).

The update didn't go down well - installed "reflect" theme but not Witter.

Restarted phone to see if that would let me install update - nada. The reflect theme went funny. It looked like windows 95.

Bookmarks went see through, widgets disappeared. Some icons in app menu also disappeared. When scrolling down the apps, the phone would randomly go black. Contacts seem to have been wiped (and unable to retrieve contacts over BT). Recent calls and messages also wiped.

I reinstalled the firmware, got my contacts back, but unable to install bounce.

Hey man, I am sorry to hear this, well I might help you but I am not sure since I am not really an expert on linux and these things.. but this is my 2 cents anyways:

How did you re-install the firmware using NSU? If so, download the firmware and flash the device with it from flasher 3.5.

If you did flash the firmware via flasher and not NSU.. well then I don't know what to tell you..

Hope this helps,

I had that problem once, I just reflashed my n900 with Nokia Software Update.

Reinstalled firmware via NSU and flasher (and as mentioned, formatted memory). Still unable to install bounce. Some other apps fine.

It's a little frustrating ...scratch that, it's extremely frustrating that it doesn't seem to be possible to completely reset the N900. [i.e. reset and NOTHING is remembered, no faults to prevent additional installation]

A factory reset would be a entire reflash (OS+eMMC content), note that there's some content in the eMMC required to sync with Nokia repositories, if you format it you will loose that content and thus will not be possible to install some apps.

OK - Thanks to Jon Shipman, his tips have sorted out the "unable to install" errors. I have my apps back ^_^

If anyone needs help with it, I've compiled instructions here with some screenshots.

Thanks Jon!

So, some application deleted your /opt folder, interesting.
Note that the instruction posted above only create this missing folder, this is not a factory reset :D
Do you guys have any clue about the application causing this behavior ?

Ja, I know it's not a factory reset. :P

The only thing I wanted was to be able to install apps again and I thought reset would do that but it didn't. ^_^

Since creating an Opt folder was sufficient, I'm saying problem solved. [Unless there's more causes for "unable to install" error]

According to the instructions you created /home/user/opt, which for sure won't help with anything. /home/opt on the other helps, if the directory was somehow missing :)
