Damaging Case
Hi guys,
I write this thread to deal with the three cases i've bought off ebay! Two so far have been garbage, one has been great! Hard Silicon Case: This case damages the N900's paint! http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...11-BLACK-3.jpg It costs roughly $5 delivered. It starts out pretty nice, holds the phone firmly, yet after a week of use the case becomes sloppy and this is the problem. I noticed a week after the loose holding it had taken small specks of paint out of the side of the phone. Nothing too major, yet enough to cause annoyance since this is the purpose of the case. The damge it caused was this; http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/7169/cdamage.jpg My opinion is Don't buy it! Soft Silicon Case: This case is probably the most unnatractive option to put on your N900. http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sel...K-SCS047_a.JPG It has an odd way of holding to the device and adds a considerable amount of bulk to it. All the side ports (usb, headphone jack, etc) now have about half a centremeter of rubber in the way before you can get to them. The top layer of rubber is pretty flimsy in terms of sticking to the device. My opinion is Don't buy it! Lamb skin pouch: Nicest case thus far! http://i.ebayimg.com/16/!BhiSC5gB2k~...jW3-!~~_12.JPG I admit the ebay picture looks rather ugly yet in person this is by far the nicest and most protective case/pouch I've had. While it's actually a "pouch" meaning you have to pull it in and out the N900 fits rather snug and looks rather nice in it. If you have a black wallet that matches it looks good together. On a side note, unlike alot of other leather goods i've gotten off ebay this case doesn't smell and the inside of the case has a nice fabric on it. Probably the nicest thing i've used thus far. I recommend it! |
Re: Damaging Case
I noticed the same problem with the same cover. It is a great idea to have a soft cover. Where did you order your soft cover from?
|
Re: Damaging Case
On ebay again, around the same cost. Covers all the screen that isn't touch too! Link
|
Re: Damaging Case
Thanks for the warning. I've been weighing the pros and cons of screen protector vs case for a while now, and I think I'm going to stay away from hard cases because of your warning.
Maybe once you get the soft rubber case, you can give us a quick review? |
Re: Damaging Case
Great, I just put mine on 2 days ago. Is it chipping the paint on the outer edge of the display?
|
Re: Damaging Case
i had one too but i got a full body protector around my n900 under the rubber case @@ so i guess it stop the case from scratching my n900

Re: Damaging Case
I don't own one yet but just looking at the picture of the silicone cases sold on Ebay, it seems that the light sensor will be covered by the case. Is this true?

Re: Damaging Case
Hey thanks for this thread, I'm gonna get to my n900 in 1 hour when I get home. I had bought this exact same case and am glad I read this thread.
Thanks |
Re: Damaging Case
ordered this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=250552618211 case from ebay. still waiting for it to be delivered. Hope there isnt any problems. I already have the zagg full body. Just wanted extra protection
|
Re: Damaging Case
Thanks for the info. I bought the case too, and as soon as I read this, I went and removed it. Just bought the silicone case and a few wrist straps. And until those get here, I guess I'll have to use that CP-321 case.
|
Re: Damaging Case
i got the same case, no problems with it..?
Maybe the mold was slightly different? |
Re: Damaging Case
yeah, exact same ****ing problem, i'm so depressed that after all the effort i took making sure it was perfect, the case i bought to ****ing protect just caused damage, anyone contacted the seller/manufacturer yet?
this is just ridiculous |

Re: Damaging Case
Can anyone comment on how much larger this makes the phone. I have a leather belt holster that doesn't have very much "give" in it. I like the idea of an extra skin to protect the phone from inevitable bumps and drops (it's very slippery, I've dropped mine 3 times in 3 weeks! :-( ), but it also has to fit in the holster when I'm not using it.
|
Re: Damaging Case
It doesn't really add anything to the bottom half. To the top it adds about a mm. Or .5 of a mm, it's hard to tell.
|
Re: Damaging Case
I had one of those cases while i was waiting for my Invisishields to arrive, wasn't great, but done alright for a couple of days.
There's no way the connectors that hold it on were going to last any length of time. |
Re: Damaging Case
Hello.
Unfortunately, I've got mine on the way: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...id=p2759.l1259 But luckily I've found this topic before. Can you post some photos of your N900 after the damage done? Is there any way to still use the cases without damaging the unit? Thanks! |
Re: Damaging Case
Im planning (as i do with pretty much anything i own with circuitry in it) to stick an invisishield on it (the quality is just exceptional) so im guessing that it would be fully protected against scratches if you were to put a hard case over it. That may be your best bet.

Re: Damaging Case
And where can I get one of those? Thanks :)

Oh, and use this code for 20% off, i found it last night - TECHBARG Hope thats of help to you! |
Re: Damaging Case
Thanks man, that's perfect! :)
|
Re: Damaging Case
No probs, just literally ordered myself one (get the phone tuesday)
they come with a lifetime guarantee, so if they ever peel or scuff, the guys at Zagg will send another one out straight away. If you have fitted similar before, then you'll be right at home with it, if not, and you want any tips, I'm forever putting them on for customers and certain things I've learnt make it a lot easier to get them perfect :) |
Re: Damaging Case
Well, the last time I did it was on my Sony PSP, and it didn't come out so well.. So all the advice I can get will be great.

The solution you get is alcohol based, and it will not hurt your phone. So when you have the sticker in your hand, not only absolutely soak it, but also spray the screen of the n900. That way, when you whack the sticker on, and its not perfect, you can simply slide it into place. (By soak, i mean it man, until the sticker is dripping!!) When its in the right place, with a tissue, gently rub from the center to remove some of the bigger bubbles. When they reach the edge of the sticker, the excess solution is immediately absorbed by the tissue. Then spray the top of the sticker. Not loads, but a good coverage. use the little card that comes with it to gently glide over the screen, removing any remaining bubbles. Then dry with the tissue again. For edges, if you do the main part first, and let the edge bits dry a little (5 mins) before you press them down, they will stick much better. There are some good vids on the zagg website regarding corners and edges. It will look pretty rough for about 2 days, little bubbles here and there, and a speckled effect. That will disappear totally, and the finish will be perfect! It takes some time, and patience, but like I said, the most important thing is to go to town with the spray solution that comes with it, it means you can make mistakes, move the sticker into the right spot, unpeel it ect. without worrying about ruining the sticker. Generally when I do a full body one for an iphone/psp/ds ect, i'll use just about 80% of the spray/solution. Always a good idea to leave the phone turned off for an hour or so after you have fitted the kit, just to ensure any excess amount of liquid has dryed PHEW. Hope that helps in some way!! |
Re: Damaging Case
yep that solotion is awesome isnt it- it wets it but doesnt loose the stick on the sticky part(so once its dry it sticks nice)- that not only allows you to slide the zag protectors into position but it also cleans any dust and stuff of the phone and zag protector
|
Re: Damaging Case
When I first started putting them on, I'd only lightly spray the protector, thinking that the solution would destroy my phone. So of course, I'd place the protector down, and inevitably have to unpeel it to get it positioned better, and without enough solution, it pulls all the sticky bit off, and leaves horrible little raised bumps, looks very nasty.
Hardest invisi fit I ever did was on my 17 inch Toshiba...that was ridiculous. Went through 5 sprays, and nearly ended up punting my laptop through the patio window in anger!! Worth it in the end...just! |
Re: Damaging Case
17inch lol omg.. mine didnt come with spray it came with a solotion tray and a sponge i just dunked the protector and sponge in it- i stuck it on my phone and sponged everything and the solotion covered my device- i was a bit freaked out, but no harm done
|
Re: Damaging Case
Yeah, the new versions come with the sponge...I'm still learning with that though, much prefer the spray. Luckily I have plenty at work to fall back on. Customers dont seem to understand the art of it though, the amount of customers that expect me to be able to put on a full body shield within a few minutes don't quite get the huge amount of personal pride that goes into doing it perfectly!!

This sucks :\ |
Re: Damaging Case
Luke, the full body shield also covers the phone sides? Or just front and back?
|
Re: Damaging Case
Wow thank god!! I almost bought this case. Invisibleshield FTW. From looking at the zagg site, doesnt seem to cover the sides.
|
Re: Damaging Case
the invisible shield covers almost all plastic except for the very bottom, the part that you can see in the above picture. it does not cover the metal rim either. my n900 has 0 scratches from the few times it was dropped or knocked. the invisible shield does quite a good job of protecting it and the metal rim around the screen seems strong enough.

Re: Damaging Case
I orderd this item
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...m=320463661378 It seems a bit different from what I see on the image (front covers more and makes the phone overall bigger. Anyone has this one in use? Markus PS: I still wait for my phone to be sold in Switzerland and have that ZAGG Shield already in hand. |
Re: Damaging Case
So which case should I buy? I already have a screen protector but I also need a case... which one do you guys recommend?
|
Re: Damaging Case
There is a similar case to these cheap found on ebay but made from pdair.
Will let you know if it affects the device like the ones you mentioned. |
Re: Damaging Case
Well I finally got the soft silicon case. It's probably the most unnatractive option to put on your N900.
It has an odd way of holding to the device and adds a considerable amount of bulk to it. All the side ports (usb, headphone jack, etc) now have about half a centremeter of rubber in the way before you can get to them. The top layer of rubber is pretty flimsy in terms of sticking to the device. I'll add some pics of the soft silicon case soon, but my opinion is Don't Buy It. |
