N95 still better than N900
The N95 is still a better all around device than the N900.
After acquiring a n900 I thought my speakers were broken so I returned them to get another and the speakers were still significantly worse than the N95. (more quiet, sounds like the speakers are blown out) The camera on the N95 takes better mid range and long range which limits social pics. The N900 hardware buttons are just awkward enough to make using it just a sight hassle. I enjoy using the N900 quite a bit for its main purpose web browsing but the limited progress of two of the main features of the n-serise is not what I expected. I would love to hear that I am just unlucky and have received two faulty phone. Also I would love to hear any other previous n-serise owners who have "upgraded" thanks. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Upgraded from a N95-1 and haven't looked back once. No clue about the photos.
I feel it's superior in everyway for my usage (messaging, surf, email, irc) and I can't imagine ever going back to something like the N95 after getting the *real* desktop experience on my phone ;-) |
Re: N95 still better than N900
I still have my N95 and N95 8G. I want to say that i love those phones. Speakers are much much more better than N900! Can't say anything about camera because haven't used camera on n900 that much(to be able to compare.)
I have problem with ring-tones, all ring tone from n95 that i try to use on n900 blows speakers on n900, (i mean speakers on full volume can not play the sound without noise). I cant use any of my old ringtones. It is just horrible. Also speakers are much louder on any n95. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Were your speakers on the n900 better because I really feel I might have just had some bad luck.

Re: N95 still better than N900
i have owned every n-series flagship since end of 2006 and i love my n900, yes sure there's things missing and certain things need tweaking but its nothing that cant be added and put correct.
Think back to when n95 was released it was worst firmware on any device at the time and it was not until few updates later that became this multimedia beast what people considered great |
Re: N95 still better than N900
I agree on the speakers. The speakers are not as loud as my N95 8gb. I have the same songs with the same volume leveling on both and N95 8GB is definitely louder, but everything else,....I'd rather have the N900.
I can always get some X-mini max speakers that are really small and portable and are really loud and attempt to fake subwoofers for only 50 or 60 bucks. Those little things get really high reviews. So if i want volume and a whole new level I'll just get those. N900 is a f'n computer compared to N95. |

Loving the stories! Keep em' coming!

I bought the N95-1 about 2 and a half years ago not really knowing what to expect and got a great phone that just continued to get better as the phone grew. I think I can grow to love the N900 but I was spoiled with my first mobile computing experience. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
I had an n95 for a year and then an e71 a year. Now have the n900.
n95 was good for camera and also was quite ahead of the competition (at the time). Couldn't stand not having keyboard so went with the e71. Camera on e71 sucked, but made up for it by 'awesome' keyboard and unbeatable battery life and SLIM. n900 has an awesome browser, camera comparable or better than n95 but..... - to use it as a daily phone is unweildly. It thick and heavy - taking it out of pocket to answer a call can easily accidently hit the reject button instead - keyboard is just barely acceptable. Not even close to e71 keyboard -still evaluating battery.. not sure what to think right now. Will more tests over the week - lack of apps is ok for now. Worse case I can write whatever apps I really need myself. Personally the like-dislike for me is going to depend on results of my battery tests.. especially being spoilt with the e71 |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Do any one experience cracking noise when you choose your own ring tone???
When my ring tones are playing on n900 the sound is not clear i have to lover volume down or use nokia's ring tone. Can any one try this please? |

Re: N95 still better than N900
Coming from a N95, the main thing i'm missing is Google maps. It isn't a dealbreaker for me, but it is HIGHLY frustrating to take such a huge step backwards in functionality in that aspect.
Otherwise I'm pretty satisfied overall. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Hmm, I think the speakers on the n900 sound really good, personally. I had an n96 before the n900 and thought they were pretty similar in quality and volume (both very good). I made my own ringtones for my n96 and they still sound just fine on the n900.

however after i switched to n900 i can say the n95 will finally be shelved and proberbly never be used again by me. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
I disagree. I've owned an N95 8GB, now an N900, but overall the N900 is way ahead of the N95.

Re: N95 still better than N900
Agree totally with frals!
I've got now N95, N96 and N900. N900 beats both of the others.. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Thanks everyone. Any more stories?

Re: N95 still better than N900
I remember when i bought N95. it was a baby at that time. not many apps available and lots of bugs. but later N95 grew stronger, bugs were fixed, more useful apps were available and my N95 could stand in the crowd on its own. it would guide me (GPS), push my emails, let me talk using VOIP, and let me browse when ever i need :). i was so proud of my N95. Now that I have N900 in my hands, its bit smarter in appearance, lot faster in speed, bigger and touch screen... still it is a baby. it needs further nourishment to become strong, mature and more useful....i have my trust in N900...
sorry, forgot to mention one important thing.. N900 is lot more capable then N95.. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Same here....That's right.

Re: N95 still better than N900
I am very excited to see what happens.

Lol I also had the n95 for a year and the e71 for a year. the E71 camera really did fail. I think your opinion on the N900 really depends on what you use it for. I realized that this past year I was browsing heavily over Edge and the e71 browsers (built in, skyfire, opera) weren't cutting it for me. I am pretty happy with the "full" browsing experience I get from the N900. Of course the tradeoff was that the battery on the N900 is not as good as the e71 though I did not have much luck on my N95 in terms of battery life, I found it quite poor. As for the N900 camera, it is not as good as the N95 at the moment but I have no doubt that it will improve with firmware updates. As I keep reminding people they did say this is a work in progress, it will get better with time. I find the speakers on the N900 comparable to the N95. If you really need something more polished there are many other phones on the market, bottom line the consumer wins! |
Re: N95 still better than N900
ha me too! I'm loving the geek factor of the n900, but man an E72 would be tasty right about now, huh!

don't know about n95 but n73's speakers are louder than n900.

Re: N95 still better than N900
Just sold my N95. I loved that device. But now can not live without Qwerty Keyboard, and that big 32GB plus another 16GB.
Camera on N95 was not bad, but not as good as N900 in my opinion. Especially during the day when I take most of my pics. The N95 was also very slow to take pictures, and had a color hue on its pics, whereas N900 can have very good color saturation. macro shots on the N900 are exceptional for a camera phone. Not sure what all this speakers bit is all about. N900 are plenty loud enough, and lets face it, any debate about sound quality on either is a bit of an oxy*****. Browser and messaging are top notch on N900, as is the open nature (ssh and sshfs for example) A few things I would like that the N95 had -Joiku Spot -Java -BBC iPlayer -Full Blown Mail for Exchange Support But all in good time eh. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Yes as soon as someone releases a program offering wifi tethering such as Joikuspot I will rush to purchase it hehe. While Joikuspot totally eats your battery it has come in handy many a time when a friend needs quick internet access on their device (ipod, iphone, laptop etc)
I agree with you, the speakers are comparable to the N95, all these devices with their small speakers don't give great audio imo anyway. As for volume level the n900 is definitely loud enough for me to hear. The N900 camera as with the N95 I find their Achilles Heel is low light indoor pictures, they both have a hard time with that. Outdoor pictures the N900 really excels at, and yeah I was actually pleasantly surprised to see the N900 lock on faster than the N95..... |
Re: N95 still better than N900
I used a N95 8gb for two year and a N900 for two week, I must say that the N95 is way better for me than the N900 for the moment (I hope it will change with the updates).
For the OS part : - No portrait mode for the N900 for the moment : you need two hands to use your phone, not very convenient in the metro, bus, street... - I don't like so much to launch a phone appli to make a phone call - With my N95 I could sync mulitple calendars and contact via html syncML with google and goosync. No html syncML for the N900 for the moment.. This is VERY annoying for me! - Control the music with the handsfree kit. No control with the N900 : in order to stop the music, you have to take it from your pocket, unlock it, find the player in the open apps and stop the song... - impossible to phone directly from a SMS view, you have to go back to contacts, and, if the number is unknown, well... note it on a paper, 'cause there's no copy/paste here! - no #.......# codes - I miss a bit the MMS but not so much - cannot easily change the volume while browsing - battery doesn't last long... - each time you connect to the internet, the N900 keep connected : on have to manually unconnect it. I guess it uses a lot of battery. - no icon for new voice message : I had 13 new message when I had the idea of calling my voice mailbox - ok, browsing on the web is 1000x better on the N900 than on the N95, but web browsing on a phone is just for occasional use for me. I don't want to spend hour on the web on a phone. But still, it's a very nice browsing experience and it can be very usefull in many cases. - ok the larger screen of the N900 is wonderfull for watching movies in the train. The screen of the N95 is way too small. But you can hardly watch a whole movie with the N900 battery... - the photo part seems similar on both phones, maybe a bit better (faster!) on the N900. - no radio for the moment on N900. I use it quite often on the N95. I also miss some apps, and hope they'll come to the N900 : - Sygic drive for the GPS (I know it will come soon! I'm waiting for it) - Google maps... - a better Nokia Maps for offline maps - Joikuspot - no gmail app (I don't want the push mail), I have to go to gmail mobile website, not so nice. The N900 is a very promising phone, I like it a lot, and I have no doubts it will become soon better than the N95 and than any phone, but for the moment it is still very new. If syncML via html doesn't come soon, or another solution (with MfE?), I will consider selling my N900, cause I really need a solution for mulitple calendar sync with google calendar... |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Hey luciole those issues are all valid, you did read up about all that before purchasing the N900 right? If not then you woulda been really disappointed :p
|
Re: N95 still better than N900
Hmm... please remember first Symbian phones. Now compare them with first Maemo phone and feel the difference :D.
|
Re: N95 still better than N900
Yes I was aware of many of this issues before buying the phone, not of all of them (syncML...), I wanted an exciting new phone so I'm not disappointed! And I know many of these issues will soon be solved. But before that, I cannot give my old N95 to my girlfriend cause I still need it...

Re: N95 still better than N900
I also upgraded from an N95 8Gb. Fabulous phone, once they sorted the firmware (which took Vodafone bloody ages). However the only thing I miss is my Garmin XT sat nav. Other than that the N900 rocks, and give it a couple of firmware releases and turn by turn sat nav and it will be perfect. Well, perfect for me at least :D

Re: N95 still better than N900
People are comparing the n900 with a device that has had nearly three years of upgrades, improvements and software creation. Symbian had been around a while, but when n95 first hit the markets (1st April 2007 in the UK) it was glitchy, problematic and awaiting a lot of software. It got both hardware and software upgrades to become the phone people are so taken with. (My n95 doesn't have 8gb ;) ) I still use my n95 (classic) for my work phone (being unlocked, I can keep the nhs sim in it.)
It's like saying 'look! My three-year-old can walk, talk, count to twenty and eat solid foods but your new born can only wail and cry'. We don't know what the n900 will eventually achieve: we have a good idea of its potential but whether it will actually realise that potential is not just down to nokia and a few professional software creators. This device is one we can all have a hand in schooling. Sure there are areas that nokia will have to work on, but this is one the community can make into what we want. Personally, I find that seriously exciting. Much more so than the 'this is what we're offering - take it or leave it' approach from other devices. Even if I am a particularly stupid and useless bear in the community - I still want to be here. |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Well said Kathy. It's funny how people are comparing it to devices that got polished over the years. I find the device pretty good and above all else stable for such a new device. People have said oh but this is maemo 5 so it is old, but the whole idea of an os like this on a phone is pretty new. I have no doubt that many more apps will be available in the coming months.
|
Re: N95 still better than N900
You're right, and also our use of the N95 got better and better over time, so that it's hard to switch for another phone now...
Of course Maemo is a young OS and will be improved. I don't care so much about stability (very good for the moment!) and bugs (not so much) which will be corrected, but I'm more concerned about missing features I was considering as "standards" on nokia phone (ex : http syncML). |
Re: N95 still better than N900
i struggled with a n900 for a few days ... really , really wanting to keep it as my no 1 phone ... but i had to go back to my n82 ... for few simple reasons:
1) i need a "real" phone and i need a real sip-phone and n900 is just a would-be-phone : - phone application is difficult to get, - no real call log, - contact management is messy, - MAJOR ISSUE: public user name settings missing in sip settings!!! 2) i need navigation, i use sygic and garmin on n82 (google and ovi maps are just for fun!) 3) in roaming ... how do i control the internet connections? at the moment 3G connects as it needs i'll keep it as a secondary phone ... as i kept an iphone till it crashed at its first fall and ... to be honest .... touch is fun, but is not as reliable as it should be ... but keys and joystick are so much better ... specially on a little screen |
Re: N95 still better than N900
Blackberry something (the one without wifi... couple of years old) has better speakers as my N900.. It was a short test but it was clear that the sound was a bit louder and lower frequencies were more noticeable.
Still, I love my N900. :D |

I am glad that I don't really use my phones much for voice or I would start going loopy with some aspects of the N900 telephony module... I really miss having things like Smartprofile or Handy Profiles. And I won't lie, I do miss MMS a little (yes, I am aware of fMMS :) ) |
Re: N95 still better than N900
n900 interface owns, speed the apps.
the non signing of everything. Oh did i mention linux ? meaning free and not getting unsigned apps and signing them. The ability to reflash and fix your own device provided by the OS makers themselves with guides that they have written. Plus the community as well. Were all in one place, rather then scatterd everywhere on different forums with symbian s60. the camera can be tweaked with firmware updates that we know will come along. all the bugs get addressed and maemo devs listen ! and as for the speakers, its not a problem if you connected them to bluetooth ones and get a nice bass ! Gotta love the bass guys ! :D |
