[Under consideration] Day picker could be replaced by a true date picker with calendar view

Brainstorm link:

https://maemo.org/community/brainsto...ew-in_maemo_5/

Whenever the user needs to pick a date the system (Maemo 5) presents three vertically scrollable lists: DAY, MONTH and YEAR. There is no hint of the day of the week. It looks very unintuitive and very unpolished. It looks like a programming placeholder for a real date picker that wasn't finished on time for launch.

How to view the "day picker":

1. General Menu -> Calendar -> Menu -> Jump to
2. All other actions that start up the system "Day picker"

A date picker that looks like a Calendar should be presented. This "calendar view" is the standard date picker that is shown in all platforms, including the Web (JavaScript and Java). The Calendar view wouldn't have to be large, but would provide means of picking any date or changing month and year.

Reasoning

The standard "Calendar view" is the preferred method of choosing dates in all platforms for a reason: usability. It is much more user friendly to use a calendar view because (not an exhaustive list, but a few points):

a) It is a standard
b) It relates to real world concepts of Calendars and dates
c) The user needs just one tap most of the time (when the chosen date is in the currently selected month)
d) The user can readily see what day of the month the chosen date will be. Moreover, it opens up the possibility of showing additional information such as holidays or the presence of other appointments is the same familiar view.

Thanks
Luis

-----------------
One possible solution:

A system date picker component could be designed from scratch. Actually, it could be implemented as a system lib to be used by any application. A QT wrapper could be developed around it, to be presented as a QT date picker.

In later versions of Maemo, the system component could be replaced by a new QT component, implementing the same interface.

Agreed. The current date picker looks flashy, but is clumsy.

Another thing that bugs me about the calendar is that the event list view only lets you create a new appointment on the current day (without using the date picker later).

Although that wouldn't bug me nearly as much if the month view would have a window for the selected day's events. Then I wouldn't need the other views.

"Day picker shows no daynames - hard to enter recurrence for e.g. 5 days only" -- still open
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5296

"RFE: Show calendar when selecting dates in Tasks/Calendar" -- Closed, MOVED, duplicate, but still elucidates the problem somewhat.

It's ridiculous to pick dates with the wheels-of-misfortune. Picking dates with a calendar has been done since forever, is intuitive, works better, is what is expected, etc. This should be a no-brainer for Nokia to do as well. The implementation could be done before lunch by a competent programmer, methinks...

Why is everybody so silent about this? Is this already fixed? Or nobody really cares?

Voted for the proposed solution.

It's not fixed. Brainstorm is just agonizingly slow to use so no one votes.

Since there were some changes, is brainstorm faster now?

AFAICT those changes haven't happened yet.

[Sandbox] "Intelligent" Date Picker

The default "odometer" style date picker may be simple, but it is also inefficient and ineffective for anything but the most obvious date selections. I have started a brainstorm to explore the development of what I call an "Intelligent Date Picker".

The brainstorm is here: http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...t-date_picker/

Push this! This date-picking crap is annoying and no eye-candy...

fingerfriendly calendar showing up when clicking a date input field, similar looking or just the same like hildon-calendar-app in month view. Showing DOW & WOY.
Also the time picker, just the same! Make it an analog clock showing (for eye-candy) where you manipulate the pointers. A rolodex-looking alarmclock (you know what I mean? the old style without 7segment lights..)? A 7segment display where you manipulate the segments itself? Binary clock input?

these are just skins for a clock and date input, get it rolling ;)

Re: [Sandbox] "Intelligent" Date Picker

Fully support this.

how about 7 segment week display

flick up for last week
flick down for next week
flick left for last month
flick right for next month

double tap to drill to that day and times
then similar control

flick up to scroll time hour prev
flick down to scroll time next hour
flick left for yesterday times
flick right for tomorrow times

Re: [Sandbox] "Intelligent" Date Picker

the idea was to get rid of flicking ( I know the rolodex-style idea I posted is the same but all others aren't)

Please move your ideas over from this
http://maemo.org/community/brainstor...t-date_picker/

to this

(I know the website is on its move atm)

and edit your posts

threads merged with 5 posts from "Intelligent" Date Picker

https://maemo.org/community/brainsto...ew-in_maemo_5/ contains one solution already in the initial proposal. Wouldn't be better to leave in the proposal the exposition of the problem and propose the calendar view as one solution?

Re: [Under consideration] Day picker could be replaced by a true date picker with calendar view

Couldn't agree more and voted brainstorms. I would argue that the second brainstorm should probably be a "solution" for OP's brainstorm. Two different BrS => more fragmentation => less chance of Nokia taking notice and things happening...

Could someone possibly look into merging them?

(oops, I guess great minds think alike as this is mentioned a couple of times already - sorry, will remember to read full thread next time before posting)

Since the N900 has a keyboard, it should also be possible to select the date with it: for "distant dates", it can be faster.

Agreed.

Is it possible for Nokia to provide just a hook so that the community can provide alternative date / time pickers. Then users can install what works best for them.
