Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
5 Attachment(s)
N900 OVI maps step by step
1) dl maploader here,http://maps.nokia.com/ovi-services-a...p-loader-steps, default is window and English, 2) Install it on your winPC; apparantly winXP works, vista has issues 3) Reboot PC, WONT WORK WITHOUT winPC REBOOT 4) USB connect PC and N900, choose mass storage mode. Open maploader ONLY after usb symbol appeared on the N900, otherwise keep repeating step 4) 5) click open PCsuite then maploader within PCsuite on winXP ("waiting for phone..." is not good, you may have to keep exit and re enter till see "update phone info, it is a hit or miss situation, sometime it works on 1st shot, sometime I have to try it for 6 times) 6) ...."Delete previous map data?..." Yes 7) "Update phone info..." AND automatically dl and install UK and Europe... like it or not 6) and 7) took about 10 minute, a penalty for nonEuropeans :) 8) Now you presented with a catalogue of downloadable maps, 5 of them for a total of 5.5 G, as space is precious, I would 1st delete UK and Europe to reclaim space, unless you really want them, "Delete ALL map data?" Yes 9) click the '+' next to your map of desire, US is 1.9 G and will take a total of 2 hrs for dl and install, on a good night :-) Maps: 0.1.23.112 (2008) Maploader 3.0.28.0 You can also do the maps manually, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=36939, thread #20; not quite sure how to do the voice though, as if it matters? Edit: more info, http://handphone-solution.blogspot.c...0-without.html OVI maps FAQ, http://www.ovi.com/services/support/...port_maps_faqs and please report experience here, so we can learn how to use Ovi better, Thanks, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38405 Edit: Updated to PR1.1, Ovi map automatically updated to Ovi Maps 1.01; new look, more functions, increase 'useablity', recommend to upgrade 1) day view, map 2) satellate view 3) terraine view 4) night view 5) 3D have fun, bun |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
I need to download maps for the US..
I thoughts that the maploader checks for the type of the phone, I guess it doesn't or N900 is actually supported! Now it's time to see if I can get this to work on Windows 7.. :) |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
On win7, there are reports using 'winXP compatible mode?' and dont forget REBOOT. Good luck.
On automatically dl and install UK and Europe, maybe that is for the completeness of a world map. Just a guess. bun |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader

We always said, no pic, no count. Here is the pic, note at top left corner, gps icon logged, internet net icon, not used, gps logged without internet assist, grey color, night mode enabled, red dot at center, gps locked, stop tracking, route used.
enjoy, bun |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
Follow these instructions for loading the maps on your n900 for use without an internet connection.

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader

Ovi maps on N900 Maemo is slightly different so I wouldn't use the instructions there on the N900 |

I still think, and maintains, ovi map is quite useful. It is the unreliable gps locking that makes the whole gps not dependable, i.e., when you want it, it does not lock. However, with the update, the locking is getting slightly more reliable, you see I have used 3 adjectives, "getting slightly more" :) bun |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
i'm running PR1.1 and i have downloaded complete europe but my gps doesn't get locked... there's "search gps" minute after minute... and every 30 seconds the pop up comes up where i should choose my internet connection?! :(

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
If you have internet, Settings>Location>Network positioning check Enable and change to supl.google.com:7276
If you do not have internet, Settings>Network positioning uncheck Enable Either way, try install eCoach and bring it up. I have NOT confirm that eCoach is helping, apparantly, eCoach keeps the gps search long enough to get lock, while Ovi map dies prematurely, that is what I read in the forum. Another one, Dektop menu>Add Widget>add Location. I read in some post, Location may use some battery though, but it sure helps to get lock faster. Post back on your experience On the road experience here, http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38405 bun |

With internet or no internet? I just tried, with internet, enter a street number, street name, city, and bamp, it found it, add to route, bamp, route is there. PR1.1 Ovi.

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
i cant use map loader at all on n900 at all, works fine on n97 tho, all warnings are below:
(you have connected at least one phone in mass storage mode. reconnect your phone and select pcsuite) (waiting for phone) (you have connected at least one phone without a valid maps drive.either you are using an old maps version-then you must update your maps app or reconnect your phone in MASS STORAGE mode- or you have never started maps - then you have to bla bla bla) (you have connected at least one phone without a valid maps drive.either you are using an old maps version-then you must update your maps app or reconnect your phone in PCSUITE mode- or you have never started maps - then you have to bla bla bla) (waiting for phone) does anyone know a fix for this? |

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
I'm just wondering why you should need a (Windows) computer, a wired connection from that to N900, Maploader and an internet connection for that machine? Why so freaking difficult and Microsoft-tied?
Why not keep it simple, and have the maploader as software in N900 and download the maps OTA? |

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
Should the search be possible without internet connection or uses n900 internet to location places on ovi maps?

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
Is not working for me on WinXP.
After installing the specified version ... I run it and it would not work until I updated to the latest. After that its just telling me that it can not find the phone. And it wants me to put it in PC Suite Mode. Edit: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Success !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Turns out I stupidly downloaded nokia map updated ... not map dowloader ... stupid ... stupid ... stupid ... :) Got the right one and it worked like a charm. But Ovi Maps 1.0 really sucks ... |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
I have the same problem. Map loader just keeps waiting for the phone. Any other thoughts?
|
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
@Moloch, gteadventure, hippo: Did you all follow exactly on the instructions? Like, did you reboot your desktop PC after installation of PC Suite? I found out it wont work without rebooting. If you all followed the instructions, and still it wont work, I run out of ideas, as I already have Ovi maps installed, I can test it. I am very glad that jsbigs did it after PR1.1, so upgrade should NOT be the problem of the above instructions. Somebody has NOT installed Ovi maps may try and see what is going on.

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
Ok so I think my problem is Vista 64 bit, as the step by step instructions don't work for me.
as anyone using 64 bit vista been able to download maps for the n900? |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
I'm using Windows 7 x64 and I also can't download the maps
|
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
Bunanson's guide works for me. I just downloaded the maps and voices on a XP 32bit netbook. Since I was already charging my phone through USB, I just switch it to mass storage mode before firing up Ovi maps for the first time (I did not have PC Suite installed on this machine previously). The software actually detected that the data on my phone was outdated and prompt if I want to update it.

Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
Ovi map is coming free to .... "The N97 mini, E72, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and the Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition", more details here, http://www.pcworld.com/article/18733...customers.html
There is a difference between Ovi map and Android turn by turn, same report, "... In late 2009, Google started offering a free navigation service with turn-by-turn directions with the release of the Motorola Droid and Android OS 2.0. There are a couple of differentiators between Google Navigation and Ovi Maps, however. Ovi Maps requires no network connection for navigation so you'll save your phone's battery life and not be thrown off by cellular dead zones while on the road. Ovi Maps use something called "hybrid vector maps." According to Nokia, these maps are high quality, but less data intensive so they are actually stored on your phone when you download them...." Bottom line, Nokia's one is better............if it does come to N900, eventually :) bun |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
Well bunanson, your fine step by step did not work for me.
Could it really be because I am using Vista 32-bit? |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
Hmm. Funny/wierd whatever.
Nokia have instructions on how to transfer maps onto the N900 on the homepage. http://europe.nokia.com/support/prod...d#/nokia-n900/ Look at the bottom on the page. "Download and install Map Loader to your compatible computer. To use Map Loader you need Nokia PC Suite installed. Open and close Ovi Maps on your mobile, if you have not used Maps before. Connect your device to your computer via USB or Bluetooth in PC Suite mode* and open Map Loader. *For your Nokia N900 use Mass storage mode." But it does not work for me - tried on Vista 32-bit. |
Re: Step by step: N900 OVI maps and maploader
I downloaded the newer maps a couple of days ago using XP and following bun's procedure, no problem.
For the guys trying with Win7: have you tried to enable XP compatibility mode? If I remember correctly you'd need to right click on the mapload application icon and (under properties / compatibility) check and enable "run this program in compatibility mode for Win XP". Somebody try and report back? |
