A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

I am interested what are the best / most useful applications on your Nokia N900.

So based on your recommendations, I could save the time + energy to try all that is available, or spend weeks missing a feature when it has been already fixed by others, so just jumpstart with the good stuff.

Something like these A-lists:
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/alist
http://lifehacker.com/5075332/best-a...ctivity-so-far
http://lifehacker.com/5212542/one-do...e-android-apps
http://www.bestofsymbian.com/s60-ess...-applications/

I made a search on the forum, but didn't find, so please link it in if there is.

Thanks a lot!

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

Given that at the moment there's only a hundred or so applications, I don't think it would take you all weekend to study them all. Added to which once you've familiarised yourself with them, you can simply follow what's fresh.

If you want to adventurous, there's all the additional items available in extras-testing or even devel. There are ways of running n900 as a different operating system such as palm.

The problem with an 'A list' is that there's always such disagreement over what's really important. Your critical list of apps might be very, very different from mine. For example, there are people here who would say they bought n900 because it can run game emulators... which have no interest at all for me. The symbian 'A list' you link to contains precisely 2 items I have on my n95, and 13 I wouldn't want. These lists are too subjective.

Perhaps if you give a better idea of what sort of thing you want to use the device for, a list could be drawn up?

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

The SDK, `cause you still have to write your own stuff...

(only half kidding)

For me?
  • OpenSSH
  • HP42 Calculator
  • rootsh
  • Personal IP Address
  • VNC Viewer
  • Gonvert
  • Conky (for amusement)

Its a pocket terminal strapped to the back of my phone, basically.

Compared to either iPhone or Android, there aren't any "cool" apps out there (yet) that I have seen. Nokia just doesn't "get" the services concept (extra evidence with Ovi Maps, which won't help you get out of a paper bag).

The only reason I'll Ovi is to get my $50 rebate.

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

@jeffsf - thanks, this is just what I need!

@RevdKathy - so I am interested in what are the A-list apps for you, maybe I can learn something from your usage.
At the moment, I use my Palm Treo 680 90% as a PIM (Calendar, Contacts, List manager, E-mail checking), and only 10% for other things (dictionaries, password manager, mp3, etc.). However, if this 10% is missing, it is very painful.
When I was using Psions, I did much-much more, because the devices were capable to much more. Reading ebooks, editing and syncing a big list of Excel tables with various data from expenses, movies and books listings. Editing and syncing word files for all sorts of reasons. Lots of wonderful gaming, just for the joy, accessing my unix accouts with Telnet, route planning with TomTom.
But it took a lot of time to discover these apps.

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

Well the nice thing about the Maemo stuff is that a lot of it will be in one place: the Maemo.org repositories. And of course there will be Ovi store, one they get things ironed out for the developers. There will be lots of cool stuff to discovery. And for the adventurous there will be other Maemo software which will be out in the wilds. Those will take some time and effort to find.

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

Petrovich is a must if you want to be able to share things over bluetooth

I also like Panucci for listening to audiobooks and podcasts

Dosbox would be a killer app for me but it is very slow and I am not sure if it can ever be made fast in a non x86 system :(

Gonvert is very useful for converting measures etc

All apps I have seen are useful up to now maybe with the exception of that game that you have to throw your phone in the air :D

I use the following the most;

-custom operator name widget > for fun
-load-applet > for cpu activity at a glance
-petrovich > for bluetooth file-sharing
-conky > for up-time and wlan connectivity at a glance

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

-Gpodder(podcast aplication)
-Conversations Inbox Destop Widget(show SMS and IM messages in your your desktop)
-Fbreader(ebook reader)
-FM Radio Player(just that)
-OMWeather(weather widget)
-Mplayer(media player)
-Simple Brightness Applet(fast way to adjust your screen brightnes)
-Simple FMTX Desktop Widget(FM transmitter enabler/disabler widget)
-Transmission(torrent client)
-TuneWiki Destop Widget(shows the lyrics of the playing song in the desktop)
-Zoutube(youtube client)
-TouchSearch(fast way to search web)
Then there are the different emulators the best i have used has been DrNokSnes.

I got lots more of applications installed, but these are apps that haven't crashed ever in my use and i think all can be found from extras. Plus they either do 90% of what i want it to do or do just what i want it do.

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

Hmmm... My list:

Pixelpipe
. I love being able to post pics straight to my tumblr or flickr off the phone. (The phone's basic editing tools are handy for that, too)

Mastory: as above for blogging

FM radio

FM Transmitter widget (FM transmitter works perfectly in my car)

Twitter apps: I currently have Mauku, but I have Witter under testing, as it does a whole lot more. Oh, and I sneaked the Twitter plug-in to my conversations/contacts. Those latter two are not yet in Extras, so the usual warnings apply.

Gpodder: Collect, manage, play podcasts.

Liqtorch
: This saved, if not my life, then certainly my neck when I discovered the hard way that my security light had goofed in the frost. Granite steps in pitch dark and frost are not fun... unless you happen to have a handy torch.

Liqflow: just for the fun of it.

Bookmark to talk.maemo.org on my 'connected' screen.

There are lots of other things I love, but many of them are integrated, rather than apps. And there are a few things I'm waiting for: the Bible app and ebook reader to make it to extras. (Mo is happy to test, but I limit the number of non-optified apps under test at any one time) I would also love to see a proper editing office suite arrive in due course. I'd even pay for that if Dataviz get there first.

If You're only interested in the cpu/mem part You can use cpumem-applet instead... :) It's basically load-applet without the (broken) screencast and screenshot part (I use Ctrl-shift-P for screenshots)... :)

  • Calendar -> If you've been using Datebook6 on your Palm you'll be disappointed as the N900's Calendar app is much weaker. Check out the GPE Calendar, it's a bit stronger.
  • Contacts -> The built-in service is nice. I don't know if anyone has made it easy to convert from a Palm address book yet, but if you can push contacts via Bluetooth that is probably the best approach.
  • List Manager -> you have the Tasks default app--or you could consider using an online Web 2.0 tool like http://www.toodledo.com since the N900 web browser is strong enough to render it successfully.
  • Email -> As far as the built-in email, it's called "Modest" for a reason, but there are other email apps that will be ported.

  • dictionaries -> I am looking up translations more than definitions at this time. A bookmark to http://www.wordreference.com/fren is working well, but the under-development gTranslate app looks like it has promise.
  • Password Manager -> pwsafe (I should do this conversion myself.)
  • mp3 players -> many choices. Start with the built-in media player, then try Canola.

This is a "must have" (v3, with safe handling of the file and memory) for me as well. The compatible Maemo app (regrettably) of the same name out there now is old and insecure. The "real" PasswordSafe now has a Linux Makefile, but I haven't been successful on Ubuntu to compile it. I'll be beating on it as well, as my N900 has neither Java for the SWT version, nor wishkit for Password Gorilla.

I had a look on pwsafe, but found no easy way to import my SplashID database. However, I could import (with some fields not matchin well, though) into KeePass.
I see there is a KeePassX app - anyone using it? Could I sync the database file to the PC in a way?

Even before I ordered by N900, I saw Free42 on the site and it definitely influenced by decision. The calculator on my previous cell phone was pathetic at best.

Free42 is the most perfect of all the utilities I've tried because it provides real value, works exactly as expected and has not disappointed me at any time. I'm delighted with it.

However, Free42 is not an "application" IMHO. It is a utility or a tool and a very good one. But it isn't the reason I own an N900. The real applications for me are phone, PDA/PIM, camera, GPS, media and good integration with Outlook on my laptop. Those are the real apps, and in that regard, the N900 is a mixture of cool things and a lot of frustration. I think it was released pre-maturely and we've all clearly been seconded as beta testers.

Of the "apps" I've tried, here are the ones that are still installed and getting used:
- camkeyd (very useful)
- Conky (because I'm curious)
- Decoders Support (I assume this is helping Media Player)
- DiskUsage
- EightyOne (I love Sudoku)
- free42 (of course!)
- FriendStatus IM Statuses Aggregator
- garnet-vm (to run PalmOS apps)
- GBoggle (I love Boggle too)
- Gonvert (although I'm not in love with interface)
- GPSJinni (only because the GPS drives me nuts, so I want to see what's happening)
- load-applet
- location-test-gui (same reason as GPSJinni)
- Ogg support (let's me play FLAC in Media Player?)
- rootsh
- The Milky Way Wallpaper
- WifiInfo

The following are installed but not getting much usage:
- Droid Fonts (is being used by something else that I can't determine, otherwise I would delete this)
- FM Radio Player (the app needs work, but more importantly the FM radio on the N900 barely works anyway and since it requires the Bluetooth radio, it also eats battery. This is a disappointment for me as I am a big FM radio fan.)
- GPXView (but I haven't been out geocaching this winter)
- Maemo Periodic (nice to have, but not mandatory)
- OMWeather (cool for awhile, but only really works if you're online often)
- PackageView (too much information)
- Pidgin Extra Protocols/Pidgin-supported protocols (not sure if these are doing anything useful for me)
- maeomo-recorder / Recorder (a voice-recorder should really be tied to a button to activate it, otherwise it's too clumsy.)
- StockThis (I need to sit down and plug in my portfolio)
- stopish (not in love with it)
- unzip (used it once)

Here are "apps" that were pre-installed that I won't use:
- Amazon installer/Amazon widget (might help Amazon, does little for me)
- AP News Desktop Widget/AP News Installer (I really tried to like this, but frankly widgets just eat battery and this one doesn't provide enough value)
- Documents To Go Installer/Documents To Go Viewer Edition (I thought this might be compelling, but in practice, the N900 is not a laptop and shouldn't try to be one.)
- Facebook Installer (I'm not into Facebook)
- Foreca Installer/ForecaWeather widget (I was ready to like this app, but it is buggy. It doesn't remember my units settings.)

There you go! If you click Uninstall, then Select Droid Fonts, then click Details, then Select the Uninstalling tab it lets you know it's a dependency for Conky. Same goes for any program.

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

I am a heavy user of Amazon, but I would say that the Amazon widget is the worst of all because it is just an advertisement for Amazon. FBreader is great, but I have a Kindle for that sort of thing. I like the GPS applications Map and Maemo Mapper. Mgutenberg is a great companion app for FBreader. The new Battery app is handy. (I'm not making any distinction between apps and utilities.) The Evernote mobile bookmark is useful. Foreca Weather is great. Witter is the best twitter app so far. Conboy is a good note application. Chess is worthless, speaking as a chess expert. Evopedia is probably fine as a portable Wikipedia client; I haven't gotten it working as of yet, but I haven't tried much. FM Radio works fine for me, though it is mysterious and willful. KMPlayer is one of the media players worth having; there are several. MediaBox is another. Miniature is not yet a good chess program for my purposes. Anything with the letters "liq" is either good or fun or both. Mirror is fun. NoLazy didn't work for me. I thought Recorder was surprisingly good. Vim is a fun classic. Xchat is a must. Zoutube or Mytube are good. I like the Rss program ok until something better comes along. I imagine that several good pdf programs are coming, such as Evince. There are several intriguing calculator programs. Conversations is useful. The media player is good.

There are lots of other programs and more to come, but those are the only ones I'm using or have tried much so far.

Edit: I forgot browsers! I haven't found any browsers except for the default browser worth installing so far; so thumbs down to old friends Tear, Firefox, Midori.

For add-ons, I use Adblock Plus and Greasemonkey and would use the one that unhides passwords that you are typing in if it were available.

Nobody's mentioned "Flashlight applet" so far. It is far superior to liqtorch. As far as I can tell liqtorch just makes the screen white, while the flashlight applet actually turns on the camera flash LEDs.

With Openssh client you are able to connect to another unix terminal from your phone. With the server you are able to connect to your phone terminal from your computer. SSH is just the protocol that is used.

Re: A-list applications for N900 - what do you recommend?

if you like to configure your phone but you dont really like the keyboard since its small you will be able to use openssh to install the server then connect from your pc.

you can install putty in your windows then find out the ip addess of your n900 then enter the ip address

use the user name root
use the password that you setup when you install the open ssh server

then you will be able to configure your n900 from your pc.

thats just one benefit
