N800 in Canada

Just got an answer about n800 availability in Canada:

"We understand your request with regards to when would the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet be available in Canada.

Max, the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet has recently been released in Canada and available for purchase at Frys electronic store."

Does anybody know a Frys retail store in Quebec, Canada?

Re: N800 in Canada

I received the same response from Nokia when I asked them the same question. I'm quite sure that Fry's does not have a retail presence in Canada (I hope i'm wrong!!)

Re: N800 in Canada

I just received another email from nokia canada:

"We appreciate your reply in regards to the Frys electronic stores in Canada.

You can visit www.Frys.com for more information regarding Frys electronic location. You can also check the availability of the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet with RadioShack.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us. To ensure proper handling, please continue to use the current subject line.

Thank you for choosing Nokia for your mobile needs."

Are there RadioShack stores in Canada? I know they used to be several years ago, but now they are called The Source here... ???

Re: N800 in Canada

I noticed that www.tigerdirect.ca has the N800 in stock. They're charging quite a premium, however: C$508 - yikes!!

Re: N800 in Canada

It looks like Tigerdirect.ca no longer carries the N800 (it is no longer listed on their website). Does anyone know of other Canadian retailers who carry the N800?

Thanks in advance.

Re: N800 in Canada

I checked "The Source (aka. RadioShack)" and Fry's sites and none have listed N800; maybe not online yet, but OTOH, this is not the first time that I heard nonsense from Nokia Canada.

Re: N800 in Canada

The US demand has been far larger than anticipated AFAIK. I think that's cutting into distribution elsewhere, given that it was launched here.

Ah, we know our privileged cousins down there should get everything first... ;)

Poo. Then explain why we get the gsm phones last, or they're missing the all-important 850 band. :p

Re: N800 in Canada

For mobile handsets, it's just a shame; in NA, by the time that a new handset becomes available, other regions in the world have received 2 updates. That's why I have to buy my stuff online from Europe retailers, mostly and accept the outlet incompatibility caveat. :(

Re: N800 in Canada

It is weird that it is not available from Nokia here in Canada. The warranty booklet that comes with the ITs have Canadian specific text and mentions all the Canadian standards approvals.

You mean each sentence in the booklet ends with "eh?" :)

How thoughtful of Nokia, eh? :D

I bought one from TigerDirect.ca a few weeks ago. On the website, it said that the N800 qualified for the 30 guaranteed return policy but when I received the box, it had a sticker sealing the box and the sticker said that due to the "low price" the item cannot be returned. I paid $508 for it so I didn't think it was that low.

Anyway, just thought that was a bit weird. But I'm glad I got it though. It's great.

Re: N800 in Canada

I also recently purchased one from TigerDirect.ca as did a friend of mine. One thing I've noticed about TigerDirect: They will often remove a product entirely from their website when they run out of stock, and will repost the item as soon as they have more available. Prior to Christmas, I was considering buying a 770. TigerDirect yanked the 770 from inventory over the holidays, and it showed up once again for sale at the beginning of January.

If I were you, I'd just keep going back to TigerDirect.ca every couple days and punch "N800" into their search field. It'll turn up again, as they seem to sell out of them rather quickly.

Re: N800 in Canada

I live in Toronto, but had a relative buy my 770 from CompUsa in Rochester in Jan. 2006. Last November, I began a search for a BP-5L battery. Nokia.ca was of no help. To raise the stakes I said it was the battery for an E62, a Nokia phone being promoted by Rogers, a local cable company. I have a collection of polite emails in which Rogers and Nokia.ca both state that the other should identify a source for the battery. In the end, I had a son, living in New York city, have one delivered from Nokiausa (free delivery).

Exploiting the US is a small price to pay for the benefits of living here.

Re: N800 in Canada

One option is using Expansys.ca to order gadgets and accessories that are not sold directly in Canada; the company is an online retailer covering Europe and North America with local web sites. Things like batteries are always available.
I got my 770 from there last year, when no one else was offering it in Canada, although, I paid a premium for that.

I gonna to NYC next week, so wanna grab one N800 at the Nokia superstore. Is US warranty valid in Canada? How could I claim it (if smth wrong happens with my tablet)? Should I declare the tablet at the border and pay some duties? Any thoughts..

Re: N800 in Canada

Any retailers like tigerdirect are obtaining their 770s/800s through the US via normal channels (So far as I know) and are reselling them at a markup. Most likely your warranty is void.

I live in Toronto and drove to Troy Michigan and got my 770 at CompUSA. I've no desire to get an N800.

mmax: I wasa good boy and claimed my 770. They only charge PST and had to have it declared under 'mp3 player' (the woman at customs laughed and said the system was so out of date MP3 Player was just added recently).

Tell them it's "like a Palm Pilot" to avoid the rubber glove treatment.

If it's only PST then it's worth to import it (~500 CAD). Thanks.

Re: N800 in Canada

Well, tigerdirect is what, $508? Plus GST/PST, that's $579.12.

iFrank 2007-02-08 15:38

Re: N800 in Canada

It's $509.95 on Expansys.ca, which includes tax and customs but excludes shipping (which was $22 last year).

Obviously, if someone travels to US, they can pick it up there, but for ordering, Expansys is cheaper that TigerDirect and has good return policies (I never used that, thankfully, but people say they do).

The only issue I had with them was that they couldn't clarify when your order will be shipped; it's painful to wait, but the longest that I waited for an order (my 770, actually) was 2 weeks.

Guys, I'm not advertising them, but, I've bought around 10 items (4 orders) from them and I've had very good experience; not always the cheapest, but at least you can return or exchange, and they're prompt in addressing issues.

Sounds like a better option than having to go to the States. (Those of you that live outside the States will understand.) :)

Re: N800 in Canada

I am considering buying an N800 but I have concerns about the warranty. The only place that I have found them for sale in Canada is on expansys.ca. It states on their site that this is the US version, would a device bought from them be covered under warranty? I tried to email them but never got a response.

Is there anywhere in Canada you can buy an N800 with a warranty?

Re: N800 in Canada

You can pick one up at http://www.expansys.ca or goto the US. I bought mine in San Fran for $399 USD + taxes. This is kinda what sucks for people who like gadgets that live in countries with a low population... vendors don't care to sell to you =P I think the only thing we really get here is RIM Blackberry devices, and thats only because they are designed in Canada.

Re: N800 in Canada

Another Canadian source that will very soon (apparently) be selling the N800 is:

http://www.hi-mobile.net/Nokia/Nokia...Full-Unlocked/

About a month ago I inquired as to when they would actually be available -- and that time is now, but it is still a no-show. I did ask about warranty, and was told:

"The item will come with a one year manufacture warranty."

I purchased mine in the US and live in Canada. If its the US Nokia warranty (Nokia Canada do not honour it) then you will need a US address if you need to return it.

This seems a bit unreasonable - what if you moved to Canada only after purchasing the N800 while you were legally resident in the USA? The warranty doesn't suddenly become void because the owner has moved to Canada - Nokia should honour the warranty wherever the owner now lives, Nokia are after all a global company. If I found myself in this situation I wouldn't object to stumping up a small amount of cash to cover any additional handling/shipping charges Nokia may incur, but the repair work should be covered free of charge under the original warranty.

Alternatively you ship it to a US Nokia repair center and Nokia ship it back to Canada - with a small fee to cover the return leg.

For Nokia to flat out refuse to honour their Warranty because the owner now happens to be in Canada (where N800's aren't available) no matter how the owner came by the device, seems to be pretty short sighted even scandalous.

Hello
Hi-mobile is advertising the N800 as "FULLY UNLOCKED". Given that this is NOT a phone I find that statement very misleading and become doubtful of this retailer's ethics in general.

On the other hand, the local Tigerdirect Canada outlet has it in stock for $379 for immediate pickup.
Cheers
Dani

Future Shop and Best Buy? Hopefully not! Customer service there is absolutely horrible - - to the point that I won't bother buying anything from them. Best Buy's a little bit better as they're not comission pirhanas.

After the 770 debacle, I've got no interest in getting an n800 unless it dips waaay low in price. (IE a price where I wouldn't care about future updates, etc).

I got mine on tigerdirect.ca for 380$ (450$ with taxe and shipping).
