[Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

Pidgin is out of question, I want better intergration with build-in contacts. I have tried pecan in SDK only, looks nice and fast. I have no idea about other 2. Just googled and saw pecan is written in c, sounds more efficiant and less battery impact?
Nothing in extras yet, only devel or testing. Your idea?

Elhana 2010-01-02 00:41

Re: MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

# apt-cache search pecan
telepathy-msn-pecan
telepathy-msn-pecan-dbg

.. in extras-devel I belive. Might be unstable, I didn't try it.

Has anyone tried this? I see the description says its a debugger though?
What happened to Haze & Butterfly in extras-devel?

And the usual big warning about Extras-devel and Extras-Testing:

Don't go there if you don't know exactly about the risks.

Re: MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

anybody has done some comparisons ? Battery impact ? CPU load ?
I'm sort of happy with haze right now but I could always use more battery stamina.

One can never have enough choice but an smaller and informed choice is better than too much non-tested choice :)

I can't even log in using pecan... Nothing happens... It just hangs after trying to type in password...

I've been happy with haze and I will keep using this until the telepathy-butterfly is fixed -> https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7375

Re: MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

pecan is broken, i though maybe it was something else that i had installed before so i reflashed my phone and first think i installed was pecan but as DrWilken said, can't login, it just sits there.
some people have it working, i'm gussing they had older version installed first or something else that pecan needs or else it wont work.

felipec 2010-01-05 19:16

Re: MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

@croc I installed the official release image and I found the problem. It's now fixed on 0maemo5. Please try again.

I feel confident this can graduate to maemo-extras.

It's part of the version number in the latest release of MSN pecan:
telepathy-msn-pecan 0.1.0~rc2-0maemo5

Is there one promoted into extra yet? I haven't seen one yet. Just try to keep away from devel or testing.

i downloaded all the integrated msn apps and none worked for me :( i just put my email & password and nothing happens :( what might be the problem does anyone know

I know pecan works I have tried it in SDK though. I just want to be safe and install from extra only not from anywhere else.

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

Unfortunately the builder is broken, see this post.

So packages can't be promoted right now.

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

I've worked around the maemo builder problem, and managed to promote the latest release of msn-pecan, please try and vote:

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

what i dont understand is why is there so many msn's?

i currently use msn haze which works fine and integrates msn chat into my UI.

why would i need msn pecan?

does it work differently to haze in the respect that i as a user would notice a difference?

thanks

felipec 2010-01-28 20:04

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

@fraanka telepathy-haze uses libpurple, which has a stock msn plugin, telepathy-msn-pecan is telepathy-haze+libpurple+msn-pecan; msn-pecan is another msn plugin for libpurple.

So the only difference from your point of view is the final libpurple plugin used.

Why msn-pecan? because libpurple's stock msn plugin sucks. I know that, because I wrote most of it a long time ago. I've been trying to fix all the issues in msn-pecan.

Anyway, aside from "working better", there are a few extra features, but more importantly; it's more power efficient.

And finally whatever problems you find with it, I will try to fix them... trying to do the same with haze will be much trickier.

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

is there any chance for offline messages and concurrent logins at different locations, possible in the near future with msn-pecan ?

mcdull 2010-01-28 20:57

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

I used haze before, but I uninstalled it and installed the "Extra protocol plugins...". Now I have both "MSN IM" and "MSN Haze" in the contact.
I'm using the "MSN IM", but actually which telepathy is that?

butterfly... :)

felipec -> I just tried latest msn-pecan (from -devel). Can't login (network error) so apparently it's still missing an important *feature* compared to haze... :p

Any way I can debug it?

I don't use MSN that often (and when I do not over long periods of time), so I haven't really noticed any problems with the power consumption.

Regarding butterfly (plain "MSN" plugin) I think it's kinda useless because of this bug.

Haze works fine (not fancy or anything), and if Pecan is indeed an "extended" version of that I guess it's just a matter of time (and bug-fixes) before Pecan rules... :)

IMHO these functionalities are missing in Haze: blocking people and sending/receiving files. ;)

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

Haze has a problem which anyone not in my list can send a message to my MSN!!

Does MSN Pecan has this issue too?

nef 2010-01-29 01:58

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

I don't have that issue with pecan (or any real issues at all for that matter) but others have reported that pecan doesn't work for them. I would try all the msn options available and see which one works best for you.

mkleung 2010-01-29 02:03

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

same here. I am also looking forward to a non-dev package that integrates the phone's built-in Conversations for instant-meassinging. Anyone?

when pecan is in testing i will give it a go and see if i find it better than haze ..... too scared to install from dev!!!

fraaaaanka 2010-01-29 11:21

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

ok,
installed pecan and it seems to work exactly the same for me ... one thing better is i can change my screen name and it saves (in haze it didnt display the screen name i was setting for some reason)

i dunno ... it all confuses the hell outta me ... my only rule is stay away from dev and everythings worked fine for me ... no crashes or random reboots or apps not working
**touch wood**

felipec 2010-01-29 11:30

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

@fraanka yeah, saving the screen name is one of the advantages of pecan... libpurple doesn't have that option, and I hacked around it.

However, when you reconnect the display name will be lost. I'll make sure that is fixed on the next version.

Also, you can install something from -devel, and immediately afterwards disable it. Although I think msn-pecan is now in -testing.

Anyway, maybe you should try to compare battery life with msn-pecan and with haze.

fraaaaanka 2010-01-29 12:09

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

sorry about the capitals, i just replied to all three and wanted to differentiate between your text and mine.

However, when you reconnect the display name will be lost. I'll make sure that is fixed on the next version.
AHAAAAA THATS WHAT HAPPENED WITH HAZE ... IT WORKED THE 1ST TIME THEN STOPPED WORKING BUT I JUST DISCONNECTED ON MSN, RECONNECTED .. USER NAME CHANGED BACK TO FRAAAAANKA@.COM, WENT INTO ACCOUNT CHANGED IT BACK TO THE NAME I WANT AND IT CHANGED, ON HAZE IT JUST REFUSED TO CHANGE

Also, you can install something from -devel, and immediately afterwards disable it. Although I think msn-pecan is now in -testing.
YES ITS IN TESTING OTHERWISE I WOULDNT HAVE INSTALLED IT ... IM SCARED OF DEV

Anyway, maybe you should try to compare battery life with msn-pecan and with haze.
WOULD BE NICE TO KNOW WHICH IS THE MOST POWER HUNGRY. THAT WOULD MEAN CONNECTING TO HAZE AND NOT USING MY N900 FOR ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL THE BATTERY RUNS OUT AND THEN DOING THE SAME WITH PECAN, I DONT THINK I COULD HANDLE THAT AS IT COULD BE DAYS WITH NO USAGE OTHER THAN CONNECTED

The screen name works well using butterfly, that's the only reason I have been using it.

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

I tried all the three plugins, pecan, haze and the Extra protocols plugin package.
They all seam to work ok. I'm using mostly haze now with no problems.. and going to use pecan regularly to test it better.

There are although a couple of annoyances in all of them. First is lack of multiple login support witch causes it to "fight" with the desktop client.

The other is that each one gets its set of contacts(repeated) into the contact list. And then you have to merge the same MSN contact from each plugin in to the corresponding person contact.

imho this is how it should work: Each MSN account (same login/password) would generate only on set of contacts, and without (Haze/pecan) on the account name.. Just MSN!

If one wants to had multiple MSN accounts, the the login/password would be different and a new set of contacts should be imported.

Cos now I have each person contact with 3 MSN contacts, wich I find quite anoying. They should all share the same contact detail.. as it is what that detail refers to; MSN contact.

mcdull 2010-01-31 13:13

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

I installed pecan (0.1.0-rc3) and tried, it has more options than bufferfly (included in extra protocols) which I didn't change anyway.

Didn't see difference in text messaging, and didn't test if pecan have better battery management. Screen name only worked only after it's set and reverted back to email address later.

Video call doesn't work on pecan. When I initialize a video call from another account on a PC, nothing is received on the n900.

If using butterfly, the phone will ring and can pick up the call and start a video call, however, sometimes and seems getting more often it will be disconnected right after picking up the call.

For me these are the two most attractive "features".

I had read elsewhere that the stock MSN, and the Haze plugin had power efficiency issues, so I've been playing with using XMPP (via a msn protocol plugin on xmpp.org.uk).

This works, although the contact addresses are somewhat obfuscated due to the % addressing scheme used.

So how is the power consumption for pecan - do you think it's better than the others? How might it compare to XMPP? I know the built in skype seems very good.

Think it's time for me to try pecan...

Thanks

How can I transfer file over skype, msn? Ive just installed File Transfers app, but it does not work, the contact list is empty, nothing happens.

Nope, pecan does not. I actually tried all 3 telepathies for MSN and only butterfly allows. Do note only version 0.7 allows video call, and it somehow stopped working in 0.8

Yes... you wrote what I want to see in my N900!!

Re: [Maemo 5] MSN, pecan, butterfly, haze....

Howdy!

When i got my N900 i installed butterfly witch i used for a couple of weeks but it drained my battery in few hours after a full charge so i changed to haze which does the same. Eventually i installed Pecan 0.1 after stumbling upon Felipes blog where he explained its written in C and is probably much more efficient. Well After using it for a month or so now i can tell that its VERY power efficient compared to haze and butterfly and just works like a charm. and it doesnt slowdown starting up and scrolling of contacts which was a big annoyance with butterfly.

As a tip:

when you install Pecan after haze or butterfly you get the msn users to your contacts again even though you have merged the msn with contacts already. Well noworries - instead of merging contacts you can just go to the contactcard of a friend whos msn account is once more added to your contactlist and just click the IM Msn field and it asks you about the msn account - just choose the IM Pecan MSN and the two visible msn acoounts are merged as.one IM MSN Pecan account in the contactcard and the odd msn email contact disappear from the contacts list.. A long and crappy explanation but hope you get it:D

In short: Pecan (now 0.1.0 RC3)works great! Get it from devel and vote it (where by the way?)!

Thanks for the review Monniman. Anyway, Pecan's extras-testing link is http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...0~rc3-0maemo1/.

Might want to take a look at http://wiki.maemo.org/Help_testing_software first before casting your vote. It tells you what to take note and the kind of criteria to look for while testing an app.

We now have THRE packages for MSN. I propose that only one be promoted to extras, pecan. Having multiple packages is confusing enough for us, the causual user will be floored.

IMHO we should remove the others from extras-testing as well.

This is not fun:
http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...0~rc3-0maemo1/

http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...ugin-haze/0.7/

http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...hy-extras/0.7/

http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...butterfly/0.7/

Someone sees freedom of choice I see fail and endless bugreports and user frustrations while searching the holy grail. Lets hope that at least half of them perish or merge.

I have used Pecan and it doesn't drain my battery.
