Is there any kind of Google Maps app/integration in the N900?

I'm thinking about buying the N900 and might do it as soon as this week...I'm currently on Android and using the T-Mobile G1 and I love it but I was thinking about getting the N900 because I need a new phone and it and Maemo look amazing and I can deal with losing some of Android's features that I love because the N900 has some amazing ones too like the multitasking and the lock button and TV out and a QWERTY keyboard with nice hardware and software. But I love Google Maps and need it, I love how it pinpoints my exact location on my G1 and I can check out the area around me easily and even use street view, and also the free navigation if I wanna find a quick route somewhere or something. I'm no n00b when it comes to technology or advanced devices like the N900 too btw, I'll get it easily. That's not what I'm worried about, I can deal with losing everything like integrated gmail sync and the easy google search from the desktop and all the apps and whatnot on Android but Google Maps and GPS is what I need to be good.

Can Ovi Maps pinpoint your location by the GPS receiver built into the phone and does it have like street/satellite view and can/does it also give you directions? If so that'd all be great. I don't really NEED navigation, but the rest prolly yea.

Thanks a lot, hope to get the N900 soon! :D

No, at least not yet.

OVI maps as of now isn't the greatest app on the N900. It takes ages to startup and is slow. But it works as a map; just not much more...

Other apps like maep can display Google and Microsoft maps and are faster, but may miss GPS pinpointing. And for streetview, you need to load google maps into the webbrowser currently.

Ovi Maps can give you your direction . You can use Google Maps for mobile + maemo-geolocation too

Re: Is there any kind of Google Maps app/integration in the N900?

Hmm ok that's perfect, it can pinpoint my location and I can check out the area around me and it can give me directions...nice. And I can always go to Google Maps in the browser if I want to see the kind of directions GMaps gives me right? And the browser on the N900 is crazy I hear, full flash and ridiculously fast I hear.

One more question though, is it possible right now to get AIM on the N900? You know the instant messaging app, is it built into the N900 with like a Nokia Messenger or AIM app or does an app exist yet that I can log into AIM and chat with people on it? Thanks.

Re: Is there any kind of Google Maps app/integration in the N900?

AIM: You dont' need a special app for this, just a protocol plugin. Everything is neatly integrated in the default conversations app.

(For maps, you can also check the recently appeared google latitude app, it has a nice map mode)

for google / yahoo maps and routing you can use maemo-mapper which is better for pointing on a map

Re: Is there any kind of Google Maps app/integration in the N900?

Let me put this as straight as I can.

There is no Maps app for the N900 yet that doesn't blow chunks. PERIOD.

The Ovi mpas to me is unusable. Do a search here to get the B1tches about it. The Maep app is in accurate by hundreds of feet at time, but looks promising. The MaeMaps page is to me the best yet, but is still not real usable. If you "must" have GPS and decent mapping, don't get a N900 till you try it out in some detail in your own hands.

My conclusion: If you need GPS and have a N900 presently, you need to get a TomTom or Garmin to go with it.

GPS ON N900 BLOWS! IT IS A POS!

Now that I've said all that, I'm hoping it gets better, but if you use the OVI mpas, I don't see how you don't curse NOKIA, I do every time I see that Useless app on my device.

Agree with Les. The stock maps app is pretty useless at giving directions.
I am waiting for the sygic N900 app and/or (preferably) a google maps app option.

The other irritating thing is that to get it to follow your position you have to put it in routing mode and click track me??? WTF is up with that. Then it just gives just plain strange behaviour.

No EXCUSE whatsoever for this Bait and Switch that was pulled on us RE OVI Maps.. I've had great GPS in my car for 10 years now FFS!

Coming from the Droid, the 900 is nothing like it in regards to "search". However with the new Firefox browser, there is a plugin called Near Me, which uses a subject based search bar, utilizes the GPS, and finds places "near you", via a Google search. It only returns 4-5 results though...not sure if this is configurable, but it returns a list, the places' ph# and address, along with a map (per place) and options for directions.

Really? I wish! Maybe one day the java version will work. That is pretty good. Is J2ME for the n900 likely to come?
Meanwhile, Maemo Mapper merits most. But it starts zoomed way out, and the hardware zoom buttons do not work.

try: http://www.google.com/maps/m
with the maemo geolocation plugin, it works not bad but could be better. you need the browser-mouse to move arround or zoom in, the only thing is that i dont know how to zoom out.

Any idea how to zoom in/out on the map itself via the link you provided?

Thanks! Funny that that info is not on the google mobile maps webpage. They give the URL m.google.com/maps, which does not work on n900. They don't actually seem to mention a mobile web version, just java or native.

i've tryed some things but wasnt able to zoom out... an alternative is maemaps (http://tomch.com/maemaps.html) from user twaelti but the search and navigation function is not so optimized like in maps/m

Have you tried this?: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=38542&page=2

It wraps the iPhone Google Maps page in a Qt + webkit app. Zooming out doesn't work atm (need to work out how the iPhone gesture stuff is done and passed to the javascript) and it seems to crash on Diablo (debugging anyone?)

Re: Is there any kind of Google Maps app/integration in the N900?

Just want to say thanks to everyone for the helpful posts. http://www.google.com/maps/m works with maemo-geolocation.

As everyone mentioned, with hover/cursor mode in the browser, I can pan around and zoom in by double tapping, but I cannot zoom out.

I opened that URL in my desktop browser to test, and I noticed that the typical + and -, and mouse scroll up/down does not zoom the maps in and out.

So what key shortcut/mouse action actually is required to zoom the maps in and out? Once that's figured out then we can find a way to pass that to the javascript or something.

Re: Is there any kind of Google Maps app/integration in the N900?

How are the LED's on the N900? How many LED's and are they customizable for alerts?

And what would you say is like one or a couple of the N900's top strengths besides the 32GB and physical keyboard...or like big advantages or stuff that's worth it over the Nexus One or Android. I think I still might want to go ahead and buy this one and give it a shot just because of the physical keyboard. Don't know if I could deal with a phone without a physical keyboard. :( I think I might be able to last with the Ovi Maps and I can always use Google Maps/Mapquest in the browser easily right? And I have 2 Garmin's at home so that's good. Thanks.

Also is there any way to tether from the N900 yet? Like if I wanted to tether my T-Mobile 3G to my laptop/computer/PS3/360, I can do it on my G1 easily with a wireless tether app for HTC Android phones...would be nice if the N900 could tether. Not really needed but it'd be a plus.

Remember that Google made this web app for the iPhone so it's most likely that the zooming is tied to that phone's "pinch to zoom" browser API.

So, don't expect it on the N900 like... ever.

But I can't complain since this web-app is 99% of what I used the S60 version for so I'm a happy Maemo guy!

The Bluetooth Dial Up Networking package works awesome to allow my Desktop/Laptop to gain access to the N900's 3G connection over bluetooth.

For a "Mobile Hotspot" Joikuspot style app there are several initiatives in the works now in the Maemo Garage, but nothing that works 100% yet.

I did read that with some extras packages and a kernel modification you can broadcast a mobile hotspot at the command line, but it's without DHCP so you would have to manually configure the IP configuration on any hosts that connect.

Anyway, the progress is coming along nicely so I'm sure we'll have a full end user friendly solution soon.

Adding to the end of the URL #II=&z=desired_zoomstep allows you to specify a zoomlevel.

For example:

http://www.google.com/maps/m#II=&z=12

I don't know much javascript, but is this enough? :)

lardman 2010-01-08 18:05

Re: Is there any kind of Google Maps app/integration in the N900?

I guess that could be workable with the webkit app, though is there a difference between loading the whole page and just the zoomed contents (e.g. in terms of power consumption re-establishing the page state, etc.)

Now the site is zoomable in a few steps!

Might be better if you made the code savable so people can just run it off their tablet. I tried saving it to the the desktop and using it and when I try using a local file (after clicking a zoom level) the map will load in the zoom level area and not the main window.

I can do that when its finished... i've found a problem.
Its to static, if i do a search or plan a route and use the zoom, the search or routes will be deleted... i have to find another solution. maybe anyone with javascript skills could do this correctly?

Hi all!
I get the N900 at 14-Dec-09 and I want to use it for offroad tracking. Before it I used Asus696 WinMob 6.0 with oZiExplorer and TwoNav softs that used SirfIII GPS chip. Now, with N900 - Do i have to buy the "Nokia Bluetooth GPS Module LD-4W" device? - because I cannot use a-Gps in widerness? And what about software - do there exist some analogs to oZiExplorer? Or likes?
I will be very obliged for answer, also do N900 has GPS hardware that uses satelites directly like SirfIII chip?
Pinann.

Your links in the right frame simply overwrite the location of the left frame. Solution would be to read the URL of the frame then search and replace the zoom value - otherwise a trivial task, but the browser security doesn't allow your page to access any properties of the document within the left frame, since they're not on the same server. This includes the current location.

A solution would be to rewrite the whole thing and use the Google Maps API, but that's already what twaelti did... http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=33645

Yeah this is the issue with reloading the page, you loose the state.

I still think it would be good to work out how to hook into the iPhone gesture stuff and how that's used in the Javascript (I certainly couldn't see it anywhere though). Anyone who actually knows something about Javascript fancy taking a look-see?

Does this support Latitude updates though? That was the driving factor behind trying out the iPhone page.

I don't understand why the browser won't send keyboard "Shift" along with the mouse event, so that we can zoom out when using the finger friendly Google Maps.

Well, I do know something about javascript :) And again, same problem here. Browser security doesn't allow any third party page/code to access any of the properties of a framed document. That includes also javascript. It's one of the basic principles of browser security and that's why we have all those APIs lying around.

You simply cannot control that page in any way as long as it is in a frameset...

lardman 2010-01-09 13:59

Re: Is there any kind of Google Maps app/integration in the N900?

Does this hold true for embedded pages? E.g. the googlelatitude app in extras-devel simply wraps the above page in a Qt+webkit app (which means that unfortunately the geolocation doesn't currently work, though I understand there is support in the webkit source code).

Would this be another option? It would also allow the app itself to capture e.g. the +/- keys and pass those over as javascript inputs to zoom (I guess!)

Works for me!

For others if you wish to run it locally...

Save the source code to a local file called "whatever.htm".

Now add "zoom.htm" to the above addy (http://n900maps.ath.cx/zoom.htm). Open it in a browser and save that source code to a file called, you guessed it, "zoom.htm".

Put both files in the same directory on your N900.

Click on "whatever.htm" from the N900's file manager and rock on saving the schools server and cutting connection time. :)

Thanks again for the idea dude. It opens up other possibilities. :)

I'm not sure how far the sandboxing extends in qt-webkit apps - haven't got much experience in that area. Googling hints that the answer is both "yes" and "no", depending on the qt version :)

Also I'd assume that it works, though, as we're no longer in a frame-context here but simply pulling up a page and executing JS on it, not much different than what you are already allowed to do in any browser anyway.

Try this for "Gmaps.htm"

Code:

<html>

<head>
<title>Google Maps N900</title>
</head>

<frameset cols="*,76">
  <frame name="Links" src="http://www.google.com/maps/m">
  <frame name="Rechts" src="zoom.htm" scrolling="no" target="Links">
  <noframes>
  <body>

  </body>
  </noframes>
</frameset>

</html>

And then this tweaked "zoom.htm"

Code:

<html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="de-at">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>Google Maps Zoom</title>

I've noticed if you go to the link on your desktop PC

http://www.google.com/maps/m

You can zoom out by holding down the shift key and double tapping. I've tried this on the N900 but unfortunately doesn't work. If we could somehow emulate the desktop shift key...
