New member - New owner :)

Hey,
I've been reading almost every thread that popped here for about 3 weeks now, since I decided I want the N900 (I had a serious dilemma weather to choose the N900 or the Milestone but I ended up with the n900).
I got my N900 today and I finally decided to join.

For the past two years I've been an iPhone user. After a month of using the iPhone I understood that it really was just a gimmick and not a serious device (I have that opinion on every apple device, but that's for another discussion ;)). What I really missed with the iPhone is the "open-ness" and I think that the only device today that can offer that feature with such an amount of "freedom", so to speak, is the N900. I've been playing with it since early noon (Israel time) and it has yet ceased to amaze me. The only hiccup I had by now is pairing it to my Car's bluetooth stereo\handsfree (Kenwood KCA-200 bluetooth module).

The transition from the iPhone so far has been great, Multitasking is so strage for me, because as an iPhone user I didn't had any... So I'm constantly finding myself closing the browser instead of 'minimizing' it and such.
On the bottom line - N900 feels like home to me and so does this community as I'm a Linux expert at my job.

I'm looking forward to be an active part of this community and to contribute my knowledge and to learn from others.

Heh,
I actually had a rather LOUD (though friendly) argument at work with one of my bosses about that very fact. I always compare the iPhone and say that it's the My first sony of smartphones. everything comes sort of 'preset' for you and you have to use everything within the constraints of the evil, evil apple. The guy from work said that I'll have nothing to do with the N900 because it has no apps... And I would be rather limited with it because I won't be able to use my bank's iphone app to access my account balance information and such. My claim was that I won't be needing those apps because the N900 has a fully capable browser. Btw, I've managed to access my account balance through my bank's website using microb flawlessly. I was amazed because Israeli web designers are not such big fans of the WC3 standards and almost all of the major websites in Israel are rendered rather horribly on anything other than IE. Even Israel's most popular news site, ynet.co.il was rendered perfectly on microb, on the iPhone I had to scroll with two fingers because the sites uses weird iframes.

I think we can all agree the iphone has a target audience out there. For example my girlfriend got an iphone last year, she loves it, she figured it all out in like a minute. She tried out my N900 and was confused for some reason even after I explained it.

I dunno what it is but some people just love their iphones hehe. Though I must admit capacitive is easier to get used to than the resistive screen imo.

About people and iPhone - 100% correct. the iPhone is easy, for a whole lot of people. After I got my iPhone3G, I gave my old 2g iphone (yeah, I had two of them, I'm an idiot) to my sister, a 40 years old american soccer mom, she likes it, her husband has one and he adores it... but I would expect a lot more out of techies like my boss and such, I mean, for me, as a tech enthusiast the iPhone just won't cut it.

About the screen - It's my first phone with a resistive screen and so far I like it, it's true that capacitive is way more sensitive but IMO nokia did an excellent job with the N900's screen. My friend has the nokia 8500 and I can't stand its screen. Even though they both are resistive, the N900's screen is supreme.

I got no problems with my N900 just wish the battery life was a lil better when always connected to IM networks.

Though I can definitely see why this device would not suit some people.

I generally call all things ****, pony.... Consequently my GFs iPhone is now named iPony.

"Though I must admit capacitive is easier to get used to than the resistive screen imo." - true :(

I must be weird because I honestly have had no issues with the resistive on the N900. If anything I find it way better than my G1 capacitive because my clicks in the browser are registered accurately etc. I dont find myself even having to press that much harder than I did on the G1 and others with CP screens. As far as resistive screens go the N900's is pretty amazing

Re: New member - New owner :)

Not disputing that the resistive screen is good, just that the touch of a capacitive screen is easier to get used to as no pressure is needed when using gestures etc. Of course the tradeoff with the capacitive screen is that using a stylus/finger nails is not possible. I only started using my nails on my n900 after I put on an invisible shield :p

I must be a brute or something, cause I don't consider myself to use pressure liek at all when I use the N900 screen.

Also, I dislike finger smudges on my screen, so I only use the nail.

This thread is made of win.
Just because apple lost another customer ;)

About what people say about the iphone, it really is true.. It's easier to learn and that's probably why somuch people like it and worship it.
There are alot of apps out there for the iphone and they're all easy to use.
However for techies (like us?) it really is shitty. We just smell and feel the constraints we have to live by when using an iphone, it could be so much better.. And that's where the N900 comes in ;D

I'm 20 year old.
I'm a devoted linux user and an apple hater.
I'm getting my N900 this week.

This probably wasn't one of the most useful posts, but i hope I contributed.

I agree but I think the rigid nature of the iphone will limit it's userbase once phone makers start cranking out more phones.

To contrast with your experience, my wife hates the iphone because of the lack of keyboard, she hates typing with the virtual keyboards. She was adamant I find her a phone with a keyboard. I got her the e71 and she fell in love with it, the bold 9700 was a close runner up and she skipped the e72 because she read a few reviews that said it was a bit buggy.

So once more choices are available and standards are in place it'll be interesting to see what happens.

No. I ordered one, paid a good bunch of euros for it. And then I received a malformed envelope where two sides were open. It contained a shipping note but no actual protector.

I've not had time to send a complaint yet.

i cannot believe this thread the iphone really is no gimmick at all- it does many great functions really well. and was the first phone to do this- the n900 has a long way to go b4 it can be as stable or as productive to the majority of users

As I keep saying Iphone definitely has a market, look at how many have sold. It cannot be only due to brand image and savvy marketing.

This sounds like exactly whats going on with me now, I've owned iPhone for year and half, now I've been watching like every video posted about N900 on youtube and readed all sorts of threads here, bookmarked them etc. :)
I should get my N900 this week, hopefully.. Can't wait to get it and start tweaking.
