N900 map without connection
1.
does any of you has encountered this problem, which you cannot use "find places" in N900 map application without internet connection. any idea how to solve it? 2. sencond problem i have downloaded map into handset already. when i start the map app, it keep ask to connect to the internet. anyway to stop? like in n95, before the map start, it will ask you if you want to connect or not and it will pop up again. this ovi map is worse than old ones. so disppointed. 3. this ovi map app will recievce any gps data without internet. how suck is this!!!! any ideas ~~~ |
Re: N900 map without connection
1. Yes, because this version of OVI map for the N900 doesn't allowed offline searching for database. To solve it you must use data connection lol. Else just pray to Nokia to bring a better map application
2. To disable the network connection is to go to "SETTING" -> Location -> Untick the Network positioning "ENABLE" then save it. Close the map and reopen it. Voila.. 3. Yes this map app does work without internet positioning. But it will take some patience out of you to make it work. First download the Location Test app from Repository "Extra-Devel". Then run the app and let it sit until it find the Satellites and connect then launch the map. This may take quite long some minutes or even hours :D Recommendation: Get the GPS locked with the network positioning first then close the map down before you leave your house. This way it would speeding up the GPS lock faster without network positioning. Attention: Enable Extra-devel and download application from Extra may cause harm to your device. Be sure with what you're doing. Other wise stay away. :D |
Re: N900 map without connection
thanks for explanation.

Re: N900 map without connection
The maps application is decent, the only thing that sucks about it is its inability to be used without a connection!
If it was more like OVI maps v3 on symbian then it would be a great product, its got a ways to go though. |
Re: N900 map without connection
It's likely that the maps are bitmap rather than vector. You need vector maps to be able find places or develop routes when offline. Maemo Mapper for example on the N810 is like that. I always do my routes the night before on my desktop system and send the resulting GPX files to the tablet. You'll need to download whatever maps you need while connected.

Re: N900 map without connection
Apparently, you can get offline maps by following these instructions (will work for N900-OVI Maps 1 as well): http://handphone-solution.blogspot.c...0-without.html

Soooo they're effectively forcing you to HAVE to get a cellular provider for this crippled junk? huh! That's worse than I'd expected. |

I have a question for you, did you follow the steps on that website to download the maps onto your headset? I have yet to try it. Edit: Seems like this is what maxximuscool said. |

Re: N900 map without connection
Location search - ie looking for the nearest Best Buy doesn't work without an internet connection. Hopefully this will be fixed.
But if you have an address or merely a point on a map the GPS will function and track you without internet, if you have the maps preloaded. I've done it. |

Re: N900 map without connection
I find the maps work fine but was bugged that it keeps asking for an internet connection. Spent ages looking for a setting in Ovi Maps to turn off but great to hear its done via Settings Location.
Should be OK now - just takes a few mins to get a gps signal. |

calculates the route ... though navigation is not working ... and yes search is not working problem is that n900 reconnects to the internet without asking permision ... even though in settings/internet connections/ connect automatically ... i have always ask!!! that's why search worked for me .... sorry! anyone know how i can tame the internet? i keep disabling the internet connection ... and it keeps coming back ... |
Re: N900 map without connection
I hope this is going to be fixed/...

Re: N900 map without connection
Downloaded maps via map loader following the book and all went well. Yes, I can add routes offline, but ONLY when selected on the map itself as it does not search for typed in places (it says: "error occurred during search request" ) which renders the option of downloading maps for offline use completely useless. How am I supposed to know the location of the destination road in a town abroad? I mean, that's WHY I would like to use the offline map in the first place. Am I missing something?

Re: N900 map without connection
Thanks but...oh dear that's bad news. Does this mean we are doomed to use bitmap only on our devices or is it likely that there is some kind of third party alternative in future? I think my real question is: Can Maemo 5 handle vector maps?

Re: N900 map without connection
Maemo 5 should be able to handle vector maps. As to commercial alternatives that use vector maps they exist but may not yet to be ported to the Maemo 5 environment. Maemo Mapper on the N810 meets my needs so I've not researched alternatives. There are multiple GPS applications that have been used on the N8x0 which are covered in the forums. That might be a place to start looking. OVI might be another place to look.

Re: N900 map without connection
On the N8x0 tapping a GPX file starts Maemo Mapper with that route shown. I store my GPX files in the same folder as the map data base and opening a route in Maemo Mapper goes to that folder and lists the available routes. Building the map data base with Maemo Mapper requires an Internet connection and viewing the target map area. Once built the maps are available locally and can be used along with local GPX routes without an Internet connection. The maps application that comes preloaded on the N900 may work differently. Rather than downloading map tiles as you attempt to view them it may have an install process for loading maps. I can only speak to Maemo Mapper and specifically to the N8x0.
