Website Search Feature Blows

Anyone else notice this? Half the time when I am trying to find a page again on the maemo.org wiki I find it faster by going to google than I do by searching through the actual page search...

Setting a *descriptive* summary for a thread helps if you want some comments actually... ;-) I initially thought you talk about search in the Mameo Browser.

Hence the Power Search option: http://talk.maemo.org/msearch.php

Tags also help to some extent.

Which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask this for a while: where's the tag GUI? I can't find anything to tag any thread with, I thought maybe it's restricted but I've seen tagged threads started by people with one post. I've even disabled filters and blockers. It's frustrating.

(Am I hijacking?)

See teeny tiny "edit tags" link, lower right of post window.

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

I don't have a link or I'm simply off my rocker.

There is no link on the post window. The window you read now (thread view) has no tags link.

There's your post, then the quote and reply and thanks links, then "Post reply" button, then a "Tags" link tat takes me to the tag cloud and the tags underneath that take me to the tags.php?your+tag+here. And then there's the quick reply box then previous/next thread, then currently viewing, then forum jump.

If you mean the post windows as in replying, there's a collapsible "Additional options" with rating and stuff, collapsible Topic Review and collapsible posting rules.

I also grepped the HTMLs of both the forum window and the reply window. All "tags" hits were accounted for in the text, the only like is the tags link.

Adblockplus is off, element hiding is disabled.

I can understand it hiding in plain sight, but in html? I should have found it by now. I'm on Firefox 3.5.7 W7 x64.

Perhaps I could bother you for a screenshot?

Right at the bottom of the thread, in tiny grey text. I agree, it's not easy to spot.

here:

I can't do a screenshot at the moment... but just below the orange "Post Reply" button at the lower left you should see a grey bar. On the left it contains the "Tags" link and on the right a link named "Edit Tags". If you don't see that I don't know why not...

EDIT: Kathy is a ninja!

ROFL: "i am a tag". Seriously.. the tags in this forum are *awesome*.

On my original note..

You people and your assuming the use of the orange and white theme :D. I have no side-bar! And what orange "post reply" button?? ;)

chainreaction 2010-01-06 20:18

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

The thing is that I can't see that "Edit tags" there. Tried firefox 3.5.7 and Iron browser (Chromium variant). One has to post in the thread to get it showing? Or one has to have enough posts?

Edit: After posting I still only have the "Tags" label and otherwise the bar is completely gray... Sorry to take this offtopic though :)

I added a special tag just for you, buddy. :D

Aaaaah, there it is.

Neah, I'm kidding.

N900 and PC attached.

It's. Not. There.

Code:

        <tr>
                <td class="thead">

                        <a name="taglist"></a>
                        <a href="tags.php">Tags</a>
                </td>
        </tr>

It's not a color issue, mmmkay? :)

Very strange is all I can say... maybe there's a control panel checkbox to click?

Same issue here. Exactly the same code.

RevdKathy 2010-01-06 20:45

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

The Talk-FAQ says that users 'may' be able to add tags. I wonder if t.m.o is set up so you need a minimum number of posts or duration of membership before you get that function?

I've seen quite a lot of 'tag abuse' here.

Goodness me! The thread I was thinking of has mysteriously been de-tagged. I do hope the acting mod took names and addresses. ;)

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

I've seen tagged threads with first-posters. Maybe admin-tagged?

Do you have admins that hover around and tag new posts? 'Cause I can't even keep up listing new posts, let alone tag.

Maybe it' because i'm avatarless and signatureless?

Edit:

Nope. :P

fatalsaint 2010-01-06 21:31

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

I am no admin or mod that I'm aware... and I have the "edit tags".

I'm just colorblind because I use a dark black theme and not an obnoxiously bright orange one :D.

EDIT: If I am an admin or mod someone needs to tell me.. my behavior might change slightly and I'll actually start doing some work lol.

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

You both have a shipload and 7 shiploads of posts, respectively.

Chainreaction, with 8, has no tags UI. Shouldn't this be documented somewhere?

chainreaction 2010-01-06 22:59

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

I agree that this should be documented somewhere. Not that I actually miss the possibility to tag that much though.

Texrat 2010-01-06 23:30

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

I'm not sure what would be documented. It seems like a fluke...

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

Great. Now the checkboxes from the subscriptions are missing. I can't unsubscribe from threads unless visit, click tools, then unsubscribe from this thread.

There is no way to delete folders in subscriptions.

I'm considering opening a thread "Why does Maemo.org hate me" :P

Can you delete threads? I have no checkboxes corresponding to a thread (only the one at the top). Also, the top header-like bar suggests rating and stuff but the rest of the list doesn't align. That looks like someone hacked the display, rather than a fluke.

Maybe someone's been messing with me.

If I don't come back in 24 hours, the "post reply" button disappeared. :D

I found that there are no individual checkboxes in the t.m.o. theme. I switched to a classic theme, deleted the unwanted subscriptions and switched back. I get the impression that the orange-and-grey is designed to be minimalist in the sense of features.

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

Indeed, thanks.

Any ideas about tags UI? 100 was not the magical number.

I also noticed that unless someone tagged a thread before, there no tag UI at all for me. Doesn't seem an oversight. Who should I ask?

fatalsaint 2010-01-09 05:47

Re: Website Search Feature Blows

That sounds like it would be by design.. if you can't add tags, and there is no tags to view, there is no reason for there to be a tag line.

Maybe the Tag is based on Thanks or Thanked instead of posts?

The UI for tags insta-worked after my 300th post(ish). So there.

The power search is not particularly obvious nor that this it is different to the banner search and the other side menu search here.

Why don't we just replace the banner search with power search?
The wiki seriously needs it!
