Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
I want to tell the Media Player only to index files from certain directories and not the entrire MyDocs partition.
After installing some ScummVM games that use a lot of audio files my Media Player is completely bloated by these. I know, all Nokia phones have always had this issue, but maybe N900 really is smarter... What really confuses me is that $HOME/.config/tracker/tracker.cfg does list a good set of directories to watch and index, but I guess this configuration is not used, because everything under MyDocs is indexed. Can anyone confirm this (and tell me where to configure it?) or shall I report it as a bug? |
Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
From what I've read the tracker.cfg file does work.
You'll probably need to remove your tracker dbs after you've changed the file, and then reboot as per this thread. |
Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
I haven't changed the tracker.cfg file in any way, but maybe I'm lost to how it is supposed to work. This is what the file looks like:
[Watches] As you can see, plain $HOME/MyDocs isn't listed in WatchDirectoryRoots. Still the entire MyDocs is indexed. Maybe it is : IndexMountedDirectories=true that produces this effect? |
Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
I think you might be right there, since MyDocs is mounted, but if you turn that off then I'm not sure if it will index anything in MyDocs.
Maybe add $Home/MyDocs/ to the no-watch list? |

So now I have enough material to scrap together a controlling GUI :) |
Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
Might be better to alter the behaviour of the image viewer/media player apps/etc. rather than tracker (as having access to all the file data might be useful at some point), so that app only asks for images/audio/video/etc. in certain directories.

Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
There is a mod for the S60v3 fp1 (symbians with feature pack 1) that will show pictures that are in the directory of the default dirs.
music in Sounds folder photos in Pictures Movies in Videos should be done with the N900 too. verry annoying to have the wallpapers in the photos. |
Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
Can you use wildcards in the NoWatchDirectory?
Such as: /media/mmc1/* (Obviously hoping that it will not index anything inside mmc1 and all its sub-directories) |
Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
id love to see a gui app for this. i use my n900 for storage/transfer and torrents and a lot of that stuff is either dupes (flac/v0/v2) or flat out doesnt belong in media player

Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
You don't need any wildcards, you specify a root directory - nothing under this will be indexed unless explicitly included in WatchDirectoryRoots (and the other way around)

Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
You have the $HOME/MyDocs/.documents/ being watched, I'd remove that one.
And add the directories that you don't want watched to the NoWatched cat. For example I added $HOME/MyDocs/Audiobooks/ and $HOME/MyDocs/Podcasts/ to my nowatch cat. |
Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
Finally figured it out: MyDocs is actually considered a removable device. In a way it makes sense if you think of the case when you connect to pc in mass storage mode.
Anyway, for those of you daring enough I have now completed a simple gui to change tracker settings and restart the daemon. It's called tracker-cfg and exists in extras-devel so remember that it's not tested and stable. |
Re: Can I restrict which folders to search for media files in?
that's a great idea, having a tool to control the tracker is a must. especially since it's very invasive sometimes.

Then please test tracker-cfg and report what you think of it :-)
