SMS through Skype?
Just spent £11.50 on Skype credit so I can text my friend over in Canada, only to find that there's no option to send SMSs through skype on the N900.
Am I missing something? Is there any way to do it? Or have I just wasted my money? =] |
Re: SMS through Skype?
I thought even the "full-blown" Linux desktop skype app lacks SMS, although it was rumoured to be coming in the next version some day some year.
Based on my experience with the previous skype for Maemo (4) those guys don't like updating their "niche" releases (esp. contractual ones) all that often, if ever. Hope springs eternal though. Maybe they have web-based SMS hidden away somewhere so your credit isn't all wasted. Or maybe there are other options on N900? |
Re: SMS through Skype?
Well the good news is that you'll have access to that amount via your desktop clients - on Mac and Windows that is.

Re: SMS through Skype?

Re: SMS through Skype?
Thanks for the replies, looks like i'll have to live with it for now.
By the way, what do you mean by a bug was filed? I'm relatively new to Linux. thanks.. |
Re: SMS through Skype?
I'm new to this too, the way it works is when a program doesn't work as expected you file a bug somewhere on this website. it is a sort of feedback system where the users can indicate what is wrong with the current software.

jcompagner Today , 06:55 AM Posts: 121 | Thanked: 77 times | Joined on Sep 2009 how much do you pay for sending an sms throug skype? i did find it expensive but i havent compared it recently But do you want to cheaply send sms? Use a betamax provider one of these: http://backsla.sh/betamax like voipbuster: http://www.voipbuster.com/en/sms-rates.html then download the app WebTexter and fill in your credentials an the right sms url: https://www.voipbuster.com/myaccount/sendsms.php This will enable you to send sms with that program and it already has some integration into conversations because when you send an sms to a person it will add that sms to the conversations log of that person. (so when you get a reply you will see your sms that you send) Works pretty great. Last edited by jcompagner; Today at 06:57 AM. Re: SMS through Skype?
Google Voice is still US-only.
Since the OP is using pounds and we are a rather international bunch over here... ;) |

All the above providers give a http interface \ webpage for sending sms and webtexter calls this to send the SMS. Other similar providers could be reasonably easily added to the list too if they support something similar but unfortunately skype doesn't provide a http interface to send messages so can't be added. |

Just because the OP used the "£", doesn't mean the OP is there "permanently", nor does it mean that someone "else" can not benefit from the info. The Canadian "mate" may be able to find some benefit. Its also why I included the (US) country designation. ;) |
Re: SMS through Skype?
managed to get it to work, settings in webtexter are:
* provider: other Betamax * don't use cabbage web proxy * Betamax URL: http://www.12voip.com/myaccount/sendsms.php |

Amazingly, colnago is right about the Canadian friend, so long as the friend is in Southern Alberta (area code 403). Apparently, nobody has told Google that Southern Alberta is outside the USA. That's the only part of Canada where you can set up Google Voice without US proxy IP and US phone (real or virtual). If you don't like fiddling around with proxies and virtual phones, you could follow any of matrim's suggestions, or you could use http://www.ipipi.com/ . It costs much less than most mobile providers charge (and if you imagine that Google services are free, you are not thinking very hard). You can use it to send SMS from your browser or your email client, among many other messaging options. Finally, you could use email for no cost beyond the 2 or 3 kB of data, if you use the email client rather than webmail. Does your Canadian friend have an email client on his phone? |

You can also get superb results that I have been gaining by utilizing the sms marketing app for my business. I had this idea when I was seeking the affordable business growth options and came across some positive reviews of the app for text message marketing for car dealerships. It is truly great.
