Mine sleeps on the bedside and I talk in my sleep. In fact, it hardly leaves my side. I would be afraid of it telling all my secrets. :(

Hope not. We have a user round here called "IWantToMarryN900" and I suspect the registrar would have a heck of a problem sorting out the legalities if /he could show that the phone proposed!

I ended up using Flite on my N810 for TTS back in August when I got my wisdom teeth pulled. My family was somewhat dismayed when they realized that I wouldn't have to shut up for a few days. ;)

Neither Ι. I'll wait until its on extras or extra-testing. Patience is good.

application idea: record yourself sleeptalking.

start the application before going to bed, put your n900 somewhere close. if microphone detects sound above a pre-defined noise level, start recording. stop recording after say 30 sec of silence.

or a script to start video recording if detecting noise above a pre-defined level...

I guess you don't understand your own instructions :D
tracker-status is absolutely unneeded here - I used that in my original post only to show how awesome the machine is thank to it's linux openness (piping the output from one program to the input of another one).

To save some postings to jaark and ralphb, we could do a search/replace here :-)

that means it is possible that N900 can speak the caller name/ id just like N95 do. should we wait for the application now???

I think you could write that with about 15 lines of python, using dbus. Go for it ;)

Re: My n900 just spoke to me ...

I installed flite but when I try to get it to say anything it plays a mess of a noise on the speakers, high pitched. If I use the command line to save to wav and play that file, it works well. Is there a setting needed?

Is your N900 in 'silent' mode? :-)

first of all, you don't need to type tracker-status at all.

and then you don't type espeak then press enter...

you type

espeak "hello world"

then press enter.

hope that helps.

Re: My N900 just spoke to me ...

Right now I've been trying to use flite with maemo-mapper, and when it wants to say turn directions, the device squeaks a bit. I'd almost guess it's just a really speed-up version of what its trying to say.

If I type the following, it comes out perfectly clear. But just using the built in "play" functionality, it fails. Since I'm pretty sure maemo-mapper calls libflite directly, the only solution will be to fix flite. But I don't see a project or garage for it anywhere. :(

Code:

Works:
echo "Hello there" | flite -o - | play-sound -

Fails:
echo "Hello there" | flite

Probably best if you just watch this video.

One of the best movie scenes ever made.

Re: My N900 just spoke to me ...

For those that are interested, I found a hacky solution to get flite working on the N900 for now. I'd love a real solution though.

Re: My N900 just spoke to me ...

espeak -ven+f1
- female voice 1 (f1 to f4 available)

espeak -ven+m1
- male voice 1 (m1 to m7 available)

try
espeak -ven+whisper which is really scary sounding

See here to see the HUGE amount of options for this.
