The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
Well! I love my N900 just like yall, I brag about it, I Showcase it as it is the most powerfull piece technology so far on this planet in a mobile internet tablet form. BUTTTTTTTTT!!
Just last night i was at a partayyyy...& most of my friends were there with all different gadgets & smartfones..and tey all looked at my proud N900 and they were going crazy overthe specs made funny faces bout the weight & size but hey I shut them up by sayin "It's a big fone for for Big ppl" bu then comes more criticism & it's very embarassing. So i tell you what was I thinking last night after not looking around too far but just comparing very basic smartfones, & I got so depressed. The fone Im praising so much doesnt have that much apps,no even close to what very basic phones r offering at teh moment. For crying out loud this is 2010 & we paid top $$$ for a device that doent even have a decent mapping app. And whatever apps are out there are created or made by some joe blow programmer that is inno way comparable to apple, android or black berry apps. I mean Nokia is one of the biggest mobile fone company on this planet, & there reliabilty is a joke now. Where is the update for N900?? Where is the Dedicated OVI store?? Where are the apps designed just for this fone, Where are the themes?? They made a solid brick of strong hardware but suck at the software part BIGG TIME, just like N97. Im so dis-appointed in this device now.. "I WONDER IF YOU THINK ALONG THE SAMELINES AS MYSELF"??? |
Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
First off, it's new so there aren't many apps, but i do agree. Most of the apps that have been created suck for the most part. Don't get me started on the useless and terrible ovi maps. Nokia should just throw that away and write it off as a loss. Google beat you on this front. Face it. Garmin should give up too. Other than that I pretty much just use it as a PMP device since I am living in Korea and haven't gotten it working with the local carriers yet.
If I could return it still I prob. would and pick up a Sony Satio just because of what I use it for mostly. I use it as an MP3 device and a camera. The Satio would fit me just fine on those two fronts. |
Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
No. There are some N900 fungirls here that kill you for "criticizing" the N900. They probably enjoy carrying two phones like me to meet all there phone needs. I still carry my N95 around since:
1 The GPS system of the N900 is the worse of its kind I have ever experienced. 2. Calendar cant sych with any linux system, though IT IS a linux based phone. 3. etc.... |

Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
Obviously, the OP is entitled to his opinions. Really though, I am fascinated with how he needlessly lengthens some words (e.g. "BIGG", "BUTTTTTTTTT!!"), yet deems other words not worthy of that extra letter (e.g. "fone")...

Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
Even a cursory reading of that was enough to hurt my brain.

Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
I think someone else put in the best defense for this situation...
Apple took something like 6 months to release the first firmware update and another 18 months or so to release the first approved application. It took until version 3.0 of the firmware before the iphone could do MMS for example - 2 years after the devices release! From my experience Nokia have been terrible about communicating timeframes and details however this device has only been out for about a month now so have a little patience. No other device has such brilliant integration with Skype and other SIP/voip providers. No other device right now has such a good browser. There are a lot of capable devices out there but right now the n900 is very high on the list! There are apps for the device and a great supportive developer community building some great applications - also if you find an issue there is a bug tracker where you can log issues and actually talk with the developer too! Try that on for size Apple... I think Nokia need to do something drastic now to keep their lead in the mobile industry as symbian is so dated and the hardware limited - have you ever gotten an out of memory error on a 5800, it totally sucks and happens far too often, havent seen that on my N900 yet! Android is king of the show right now, Palm are doing interesting things and Apple are, well apple. Nokia and Microsoft need to really get to work asap! The Hardware is great, time to work on the software and services... Dont get me wrong the n900 is far from perfect but it is a decent device, with a bit of work it could be great! I for one am hopeful... |
Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
ok let me be honest....
remember when ovi maps first came about? it was terrible! but rapidly over time it became fabulous.. agreed not as comprehensive as google maps but it still has its pluses over google maps.... (try this link from your n900 see if this helps you http://n900maps.ath.cx ) maemo is a totally new OS and it has been stated that the N900 is not the "mass consumer device" so expect these sort of things.... again i said alot of people bought the n900 and didnt know what they were getting into...they just bought it as it was the "new thing"... ovi store- unless you havent seen " coming soon"...and if you want apps why not try maemo.select? maybe even downloads on this site? or the repositories? again i say why are you disappointed in a device that was and has been clearly stated as "not a main stream device"? |

Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
patience is a virtue, i think we also need to remember that the current apps, good or not are free, and are written by enthusiasts of the maemo platform, and these people do it in their own time off their own backs. not being technical in that way, i for one am greatfull. with regards to nokia. it'll come when it comes, no amount of whining is going to make it any quicker. Judging by the advertising and vodafone in the uk picking up the phone, i think nokia will be supporting this phone for a while yet.

Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
Would it be a trolling/flaming crime to admit this made me think of this?
Cos if so, I guess I'm doomed to a special hell. :( |
Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
patience is a virtue when it comes to the N900 in a few months were all going to be eating our own hats as to why we doubted the N900 in the first place..
but i think our wow moments are going to be coming from the maemo community, not nokia.. |
Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
Don't worry everyone, the next technology bandwagon will be passing by any day now.

Depressed over a mobile device? Get a life, if you don't like the situation with the n900 at the moment then just get rid.
Every day I check these forums for news on maemo, and what over night developments have been made but allways in the recent posts list there is some thread slamming the n900 for failing to meet expectations or comparisons against new devices; talk with your money and feet. |

No, you are quite right. The applications made for the N900 are for the most part made to fulfill a need (eg. many users asked for a 2G/3G switching applet, qwerty12 created it) There are undoubtedly many well made applications for the platforms you mention, sadly these are eclisped by the barrage of cheap useless crap made only for revenue sake. |
Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
Being at a partayyyy and getting depressed bcuz ur fone isn't good enuf is symptomatic of a sickness shared by too many.

Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
you know what guys, as much as we all like to praise our n900 i have to agree somewhat with this post. i mean, when i first got my n95 i felt like the top dog. i remember saying the iphone was all software but no hardware which is why i had gotten the n95. it took nokia months to release first firmware for unlocked phones (not usa version) and it seems like they are repeating same thing again with every new phone they come up with. from 5800, n97 to n900 it's all about new hardware with them but the software sucks ***. yes maemo is fairly new but it's been almost 3 months since release with no ovi store yet, and no firmware that was supposed to come out at the end of last year. i guess what i'm saying is that i'm never buying a "new" phone from nokia again when it's initially released onto the market. maybe after months or so when nokias native software works (pc suite, ovi store mac compatibility etc) really dissappointing since i like nokia and yes their hardware is awesome but lacking in software will bring down the phone. i dont like apple and their close minded ways but they are good at working with what they got (crappy hardware)

Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
I wonder at his self esteem that he feels the need to get approval from others for a phone. Personally I adopt the attitude - if its right for me - who gives a flying fark at a rolling donut what everyone else thinks.
Then I fire up openarena and wargus and browse the web in glorious desktop format and I forget to care about anything else. |

But seriously though why are we all replying to the OP when he/she/it only have 1 post in this whole forum and it's copied from somewhere else... This is an obvious troll who's intentions are to start a flame war + debate.. This has been said many times and it's like now known in the tech world that: The N900 isn't meant for the mass market.. The N900's OS Maemo 5 is still new.. Maemo is still in the early stages in getting discovered by the mass market.. Yes I would love to see the N900 grow and mature until we have SO many useful apps/games... etc. But for now it's doing much better than lots of the devices out there straight out-of-the-box!! I don't see devices out there that has an FTP client in there.. I don't see devices that can be a server.. I don't see devices that can be a universal remote (except the iPhone, but even that you have to buy things for it hardware and software).. I don't see devices that are capable of multitask like this or browse the web like the N900... and the list goes on and on.. In conclusion I am being dumb enough for also replying back to this thread! LOL.. No but on a serious note.. for whoever has doubts about their purchases I can only say to them is to think about what the N900 can actually do straight out-of-the-box and calculate how long has the N900 been released to the public and then compare that with other devices and app stores... (how long did those app stores take to become how they are right now).. Oh and one more thing PEOPLE LEARN HOW TO BE PATIENT for God's sake! Seriously people now-a-days have 0 patience which really bugs me alot! (and this is coming from a 20 year old!) |
Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
a lot of posts on here seem to assume that people with gripes didnt check the product info before it was released. I did - but lots of what was promised doesn't exist. It wasn't until 2 months after I preordered it that Nokia announced it wouldnt work on 3 sims - even tho I specifically checked this at the time that the order was placed.
As for comparing the iPhones update history to Nokias, I tend to agree that this is the first release so I probably expected some bugs, especially knowing Nokias track record of releasing phones that don't do what it says on the tin! Suggesting Nokia will lose its lead as a market leading phone maker, which phone are we talking about?? Nokia haven't held that honour for a long time! Nokia need to concentrate efforts to: 1 make this phone work as it says it would on the pre sale material 2 fix bugs, especially the 3 sim issue and mms shortcoming as its biggest priority - yes i realise some of you dont think mms is necessary but for very many users, it is. 3 Make it work as a phone. If some of you guys want to carry around a phone and an N900, and find that acceptable - personally I think your expectations in life must be fairly low. 4 Stop brown nosing up to Nokia. They have a duty to provide the phone/device whatever you want to call it, as promised. Don't accept these shortcomings else Nokia will sit back on their laurels and do nothing about it. 5 This is an extra moan - can people PLEASE stop posting duplicate posts! There are hundreds of threads that all say the same thing!!! Can't we have a sticky for problems and maybe a poll on what features people expect? I find it a PITA that I have to trawl through soo many posts that say the same thing just to find something interesting. cheers |
Re: The Great Nokia N900 & Maemo 5 or may be not??
Why are these posts not locked or deleted by the mod team. I come to this forum to find info and help others if possible. However the place is getting crowded with trolling and moaners. All very well a constructive criticism post, and there have been a few good ones, but this is an example of badly worded dross.
As bonerp says, maybe just stick these in a junk area or the one junk moan post. [AliG]Is it coz it is black[/AliG] |

Now we have some hot shots here & on every other forum(some 20 yr old) now since they don''t have a thing to defend or any fact to make a point what they do is try to divert the issue and focus on the way I post my threads and they will analyze the lingo and will end the topic by sayin that they''re much happy & they r patient. We''ll once again as the poster above mention in his post about ya''all {{3 Make it work as a phone. If some of you guys want to carry around a phone and an N900, and find that acceptable - personally I think your expectations in life must be fairly low.}} At the end of the day my self or ppl like have been loyal nokia clients and just want Nokia to deliver what it promises. |
