while its tempting, i am going to wait and see what prices the snapdragon&android products that showed up at CES will cost.

that is pretty cheap for such device. I would buy it though I got N900 already.

I forget if Mer would run on this. I think it would but that the processor would make it not much more powerful than an N8x0. Nice form factor visually (wish I knew it's actual dimensions and weight), but it's foolish for a device like this not to include a built-in kickstand.

HDMI 1080P - nice. Good enough to use as a desktop computer replacement, if it had a bit more speed and a lot more memory :)

I was waiting for this. A bit disappointed this doesn't have more RAM and higher CPU. Wonder if this can playback 1080P mkv anime files or not?

they claim 1080P playback from mkv containers, so i think it should work.

do note, the upgrade from the smartq5 is dedicated video decoder hardware, while the rest stays mostly the same.

the smartq5 had something similar btw, and used a mplayer variant with unshared modifications, so expect the same here. That is, if one installs something other then the official firmware, playback may be a problem.

and as we are talking about a chinese company that have no external presence, good luck dragging them to court for GPL breach...

Dragging them to court? Maybe kindly asking them first would be a good idea ;-)

(Although I imagine the real problem lies in the Samsung kernel module for SmartQ5)

Wow. If you don't need the phone-ish features of the N900 and don't mind using an OSK only, that's a much better deal.

I looked at it and from the forums it would seem that as a tablet for Linux geeks who don't need a phone, this could be the answer. Supposedly the Android implementation is very slow and WinCE isn't much better. The device seems to ship with older versions of the firmware and Ubuntu but after updating the Linux crowd seems pretty positive.

Re: smartQ V5 has been officially released now!!

i guess android is slow as the device uses arm11 rather then cortex.

Re: smartQ V5 has been officially released now!!

to be honest i only use the ubuntu mid distro.. but i did boot the others to just play with... wince is chinese by default but theres a cab to fix... andriod was really responsive... but that's also mostly in chinese off the bat so i didn't really spend too much time... but everything worked pretty peppy.

qkall 2010-02-05 03:33

Re: smartQ V5 has been officially released now!!

finally did the upgrades... well only to winCE and ubuntu-mid... apparently andriod has no bluetooth and no dhcp wifi... so no go for me... but yeah tv-oout is great... video playback is surprising.
