[DIY] [Maemo 5] Tech demo of Starcraft engine

Just so no one is disappointed after going to the effort, here's the feature list for stargus.

Quote:

Features

* All of the Terran units have been added although not all of the features work yet
* All of the Zerg units have been added although not all of the features work yet
* Some of the Protoss units have been added
* Sounds and music work
* In-game menus are mostly finished
* More complex Computer AI
* Tilesets flags have been added although not all of the flags work yet

* Campaigns do not work
* Videos do not work
* Zerg larva + creep have not been added
* Most of Protoss units have not been added
* Protoss Shields have not been added
* Spells do not work

* In-game console needs some work (unit portraits, etc)
I think they may have forgotten to update that with the biannual update this summer, but it's still not complete.

Edit (2010/3/8): After consultation with the original poster of this thread, i have decided to post the instructions in the wiki. This is to reflect my desire to keep the useful information he shared, while respecting his weariness of the thankless hordes of children and other immature individuals hounding him for help with getting it to work. Here are the instructions. I am not supporting this; don't contact me to ask for help. Don't contact the original poster to ask for help. You can see this as a DIY project if you like.

Good luck, have fun!

I hope he really means the video since stargus is not getting updates pretty soon... I've been watching it for a while now and development is pretty slow...

Keep an eye on the news at the upstream project site. There was one release this summer and a bunch in 2007. I'm not sure how many commits are going into the source tree, but i think not many.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/stargus/

It's hard to get people to rally around a dev project that will always require users to extract their commercially-purchased content to be able to play.

Gotta give credit to the OP for going to the effort to make a video and prepare installation instructions for a game he's never played. Hehe psst...you gotta build an extractor before you can harvest vespene. ;)

Wow, that's great! Doom and Starcraft were my most favorite games. And about 15 years ago I myself had a hobby of reverse-engineering and porting old games, so I know how hard it can be... Kudos to everyone involved!

First of all, do you know what a "root" directory is? Another name for "root directory" is "top" directory. If your memory card has no folders, everything stored on it is in the root directory. If it has folders, what's stored in those folders is stored in sub-folders or sub-directories. Hope this helps.

is memory card refer to microsd or the internal drive (mydocs) of n900?

"Memory card" is the removable micro sd card. Your internal memory is sometimes refered to as "internal flash" memory.

The N800 has two SD sockets so that it has internal flash, internal SD and external SD.

I am assuming that you are not merely trying to install an app but rather you are trying to copy a file to a certain directory on your internal memory. On my N800, I run a file manager called emelfm2 after gaining root permission. The file manager that comes with the N800 cannot "see" the internal flash memory.

you can't run it from internal memory. the files MUST be in /media/mmc1/games/stratagus

This is great, one of my favorite games of all time! I just have one question which may be a stupid one, but how do i hide the top bar during the game? I can't find it in the settings, and it's preventing me from seeing the bottom part of the map in the game.

in the options, where you can set the display resolution, check the fullscreen checkbox.

Here is the How-To for installing Starcraft on your N900. If you've not yet seen the video, here it is again:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoxSCQb_d4s

To install this you need to have rootsh installed. If you don't have it yet please install it through the Program Manager (with maemo extras enabled). Also you need to have a memory card inserted in the N900.
First you need to get the files from the original Starcraft CD with Stargus:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/stargus/
Download Stargus
Put your Starcraft CD in.
Install Stargus and when you're asked for select the CD-Rom drive.
When finished exit Stargus and go to the directory, where Stargus was installed (C:\\Program Files\Stargus)
Copy the CONTENT of the Data directory to your memory card to memorycard:\\games\stratagus\
Next you have to download this file: zehjotkah.ddl.at/stratagus-0.1-4_armel.deb
Copy this file to the root directory of your memory card.
Open X-Terminal on the N900 and type in the following:

root
cd /media/mmc1/
dpkg -i stratagus-0.1-4_armel.deb

Now it gets installed and you're ready!
When you see this code while installing Stratagus:

Code:

Setting up stratagus (0.1.4) ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/stratagus.postinst: line 7: maemo-select-menu-location: not found

It doesn't mean anything serious. That was the category selection menu in maemo 2008 (diablo). In maemo 5 we don't have this selection menu but it doesn't matter, the game installed fine.
If you already have Warcraft 2 installed, you first have to rename your Warcraft 2 games directory on your memory card.
Have fun!

Credit goes to linman who has ported Stratagus for maemo and the Stargus team.

hi... I've been playing starcraft since I was a kid.. so I know everything on how to play with it.. I tried to install it and it was successfully installed.. but, when I played with it.. after I built a lot of building and make more than 40 soldier.. the game closed.. It goes back to the windows of n900.. I think there's a bug on it.. IDK.. its really fun! but you need to fix the bug please..

Read the feature list on the second post. This is not a completed Starcraft engine, it's just partial. It isn't likely to be finished ever.

I can see in http://stargus.sourceforge.net that there is a newer version (0.2) that supports more compex AI and more features.
Myabe someone can compile and create a package for the newer version?
