n770 or n800?
Hey,
I have the option to buy the 770 for $225 or the 880 for $399. I will use the device mainly to surf the web and as remote controle for the olive music server. I haven't touched either of them. Can anybody give me advice on which tablet is best for my needs? Thanx! |
Re: n770 or n800?
Of course N800 is better for everything. Only if you insist having integrated hard cover you might want 770. If Nokia fails to make os upgrade to 770 (let's hope not!) most activity around it will soon be dead.

Re: n770 or n800?
Agreed. Treat the 770 as unstable and obsolete - although I haven't seen many reports about the 800's stability yet.

Re: n770 or n800?
Stability: pretty good. I usually have at least 2 browser windows open, sometimes more (usually reader.google.com & this site), and sometimes another app like xterm, or application manager, and I have had not one crash all week. I use it all day long every weekday and 3 nights a week for taking notes in class. Seems much more stable than 770 for my use. Mplayer does crash on a 250 MB avi, but other than that it has been smooth sailing. BT and wifi also are more stable.

Re: n770 or n800?
It is my understanding from Ari's blog that the 770 will continue to be sold this year. Why would any one buy a 770 over the N800? To save $40? NOT. I don't understand why Nokia is still selling 770s unless they are trying to clear out old inventory.
I feel sorry for the people who buy new 770s this year unknowingly they get a buggy OS with no future SUPPORTED updates from Nokia. |
Re: n770 or n800?
At $225 the 770 IS a great buy.
But if you have got the $400 then go for the N800 as it just feels so much better when using it. |
Re: n770 or n800?
tabletfan: Tosh.
The 770 will continue to be sold and supported with updates. This has been made clear by Ari from the initial launch of the N800 - the only thing that has changed since is that Nokia are now reconsidering the porting of OS2007 to the 770. The 770 will be sold significantly cheaper than the N800, so you have a choice - buy the 770 (the OP can get it for $225) or spend $175 more and buy the N800. Two different price points, two different products, both supported going forward. |

Current pricing in the UK (which I assume will change with a bigger drop on the 770 at some point): N800 £269 (but you can also find it for £279 on a different page on the Nokia site!) 770 £245 (or £355 with Nav kit). |
Re: n770 or n800?
If you want it for web surfing,.. I'd go with the N800 due to flash 7 and Opera8.5. The 800 is faster and has more ram options. You can't even view the Nokia website for the 800 without flash 7.

I'm not sure of the OPs source - could be eBay for all I know - but he's saying he can get it for $225 when the N800 is retailing for $400. |
Re: n770 or n800?
The Compusa prices is $350 with no current rebates:
CompUSA 770 I think the $225 is probably for a used model. They are selling for that price on Ebay and Craigslist. |
Re: n770 or n800?
N800 vs N770 --- N800 all the way, and I found out the hard way - lost my N770 (thought it was left in a clothing store changing room), 2 weeks later I saw the N800 release on 1/8/07 - bought the N800 that day at the Nokia website, had it at my door on 1/10/07. On 1/11/07 - no kidding - found my N770 buried in the backseat of my car. Depressed and happy a the same time, I tried to decide what to do. My final decision was - nothing - keep them both. What the heck. So, as you can image, I've had fun placing them side-by-side and doing all sorts of geeky comparisons; much the same as I did when I had my first 486 computer and I would time, with a stopwatch, how long it would take to boot up or how long it would take to open up WordPerfect. So, here is my take...
the N800 is definitely faster than the N770. The 320Mhz processer makes a significant difference for the better. I would say by 20% or more. That might not seem like a lot, but a year of regular use on the N770 - 20% faster loading time is significant - still nothing like a LAN desktop, but for laying in bed it's much nicer. For sampling, I use web pages that take some time to load - such as USAToday and ESPN (although the flash-y videos on ESPN off to the right side obviously won't run on either model). Also - for everyone that has the N770 - if you haven't upgraded to the OS that came out back in Aug or Sep 2006, then you better get it - my N770 runs faster, smoother, and rarely locks up since the upgrade; but the bottom line is that the N800 is noticeably faster than the N770, not by Olympic proportions, but noticeably. I can't say much for problems with the N800 shutting down on me...but after 2 days of continual use -- and I mean good solid hourly use -- I think the N800 only locked up once, and that is after I was clicking all over the place. I read a thread elsewhere on this site about having several browsers open on the N800- yes, you can keep a few open and the N800 will run well. I haven't had more than three browser pages up at any one time, and I can't see why anyone would under normal conditions. With the N770, there were times I would risk fatal shutdown if I had more than one page open. So, with the N770, I just disciplined myself to keep one task running at all times and this kept problems to a minimum. I have a few videos that I copied to both units (animated jokes friends and co-workers send around 2-6MB in size). The N770 takes about 9 seconds to begin playing the video if you open from the "File Manager". The N800 takes about 6 seconds to open. Same type of ratio, roughly, for music files and startup of the pre-loaded games. As for the screen - the N800 is sharper, not sure if the specs are better - I think it has to do with the N770 screen being a little more "squishy" and textured and the N800 screen is more "glossy" and glassy. Not sure if this has anything to do with my N770 being 11 months old or not. Also, this should be a new one for everyone listening - the single speaker on the N770 is louder than the speakers on the N800. The N800 is advertised as "stereo", but to the naked ear I think the dual-speakers are nothing more than two (smaller) speakers than the one that comes with the N770. The N800 gets a HUGE kuddo for the fold-out kick stand - a champion design. the two rubberized "put-them-together" stands that came with the N770 were a laugh - who even has a pair laying close by? If someone were to ask my opinion on the value of purchasing the N800 over the N770 - no question, go with the N800 - it is a much better upgrade to the N770. But only buy the unit if you are occasionally around Wi-Fi spots, such as BW3's for lunch, hotel travel, your home (in bed), around town. Basically, there is not much point to having one of these if you don't see yourself doing some web-surfing here and there throughout your typical week. If you do, then set up a ton of links (or do what I do, set up a ton of links on a generic website on your personal webspage and link to that single page)..you don't want to use the tap-keyboard everytime you want to hit a new site. My only complaint about the N800 is there is no case-cover that turns the screen inward when you want to keep it in standby. I like to pop my unit in and out of my front pocket, and although it goes into standby easily and resumes easily with the click of the screen, I'm afraid that keeping the N800 in my pocket will trigger the standby mode on and off - thus, drain the battery quckly. I'm one of those people that keep the unit on for days at a time.:D :) |
Re: n770 or n800?
...everyone forget what I said in the previous (long) post about the N800 volume. I forgot the volume control in the toolbar at the top right area of the main display is independent from the volume control in the audio and video players. Duh! The N800 volume (2 speakers **claimed stereo by Nokia**) is BY FAR MUCH LOUDER than the single speaker on the N770.

Also, Texrat announced back in mid December that CompUSA had a $100 rebate on the 770. I've no idea how rebates work (or how long they last) in relation to internet sales, I live in the UK and rebates are an unknown concept over here! :) |

draider - jeepers, I can't even begin to read your post... paragraphs are a great invention! ;)

Re: n770 or n800?
I'd like to upgrade, but I have to say the N800 exterior is pretty unappealing even for a geek... :(

:-) I'm sure many of us will love the n800 because of its features, doesn't change the fact that the case leaves room for improvement though. |
