Freemap-il on N900
For the Israeli users of N900:
The version of freemap-il currently in extras-devel for fremantle works partly with GPS - it can read the GPS, but it cannot activate it yet. In order to use freemap with GPS you need to have some other program that uses the GPS (such as Nokia maps or gpxview) running at the same time. I do not know when I'll work on this issue. |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
Thanks, we waiting !

Re: Freemap-il on N900
what about the ones that are not in israel? if i provide the maps, how hard could it be to make it work somewhere else?
|
Re: Freemap-il on N900
Thanks..
I saw the package on your arava site, and I left you a private message.. But I guess now it's irrelevent.. Edit: Alright, I synced it and it downloaded the map... Awesome.. Edit 2: Its path finding algorithm is less then perfect.. But, better than nothing, right? :) Thanks again matan. |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
Thanks Matan,
Is this the old version of what has become "Waze"? Looks like it has the same map but does not include the new "live" interconnectivity (community traffic reports etc.), right? |

Re: Freemap-il on N900
That was a silly bug. The version now in extras-devel (1.0.8-0.2maemo4) should work. It also includes the GPS console (roadgps).

Re: Freemap-il on N900
Matan. I am an Israeli web developer and programmer, would like to discuss a few things with you regarding N900 and maemo (just got mine few days ago =)
If you can, send me a mail on sagirodin@gmail.com and I'll get back to you. Thanks, Sagi |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
Hi all and thanks to Matan for the effort.
i've installed the version from extras-devel, but when running it in says "Error" "Can't load map data" and after i click OK (in hebrew), the center of the map area says "can't find map" (in hebrew). am i missing something, or do i have a broken installation? Btw, what about porting the latest version of waze to maemo? is anyone considering it? i've emailed waze asking if they would take responsibility of the code (merge it into their main branch) in case i'll do the porting (so that it won't be a branch that requires updates every time they change or improve something), and they simply ignored my letters. how rude. |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
The package does not come with a map. You need to synchronize the map (in the file menu).
|
Re: Freemap-il on N900
If it still does not work, you should try to run in an xterm
rm /home/user/.freemap-il/maps/* And then try to synchronize map. |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
thanks. that did the trick.
i suspect that at first when i didnt have the map data i moved away from israel inro the see. so later when i tried all the update options in both the file and the find menus it still appeared as if i didnt have map data. later for some reason the application started getting segmentation fault a few seconds after i launched it comsistently. a problem that wasnt resolved with a reinstallation, but got resolved as soon as i removed the contents of the maps folder. |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
Hello,
I just got my N900 a few days ago, (had n95 before), and I love it. But I am really missing waze, I am honestly considering using the n95 till waze comes to maemo, or meego... For now I have tried installing freemap-il, it's running, gets a fix in 10 seconds on my house (from inside the house), but I just can't figure out how to enter a destenation address to navigate to it, I don't even care about voice, just directions. Any ideas? |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
hi matan,
i assume this is gpl ? am i right ? if so, where is the source code (including the changes you made to it) ? thanks, erez. |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
yes its GPL.
His code can be found here: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d.../f/freemap-il/ and the latest code from Waze can be found here. http://www.waze.com/wiki/index.php/Source_code btw, in case we port the latest waze, i assume we need to create new graphics and resources since the ones they use are proprietary. am i right? |

sorry for the late response, i assumed someone with more experience with this program will answer, since i'm also not entirely sure how to used it. anyway, what i found is: look for an address in the find menu. set it as destination in the trip menu. (or via long click on a point). then in the trip menu, select ניווט. i think that's how i did it last time. but now, when i tried to re-create, it didn't work. so i updated my map. restarted the program. and now i get some prints in the terminal and the program starts with a different ui. the prints are a call-stack: roadmap_config.c line 649, found no 'schema' config file, check roadMap installation. roadmap_locator.c line 153 saying it can't open directory database (usedir) i'll try reinstalling it later. |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
Hi,
I can't seem to get a GPS location. When I open both maps app and the freemap-il the GPS satelite icon just blinks and is in a "searching" status. This happens both inside and outside the house. Also, I can't seem to find a way to download the Israeli maps for the freemap-il. I've tried the "rm /home/user/..." but the xterm is saying "cant remove since there is no file or folder that name". Download map from the find menu just does nothing. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Sagi |
Re: Freemap-il on N900
anyone can help with my problem, Matan maybe?

Re: Freemap-il on N900
