N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Hi guys.
I heard about a new update today and descided to update my phone. The icon didn't show on my phone like I thought it would, so I downloaded Nokia Software Updater and used that program to update. My current version was 1.2009.42.11 and I was updating to version 1.2009.44.1. The problem was that after downloading the update and beginning to install on phone it froze (at "1 sec left" or something). I waited for nearly two hours for something to happen and finally did the only thing I could, plugged it out. I know you're not suppost to plug it out or turn it of while updating, but I had no choice. So I removed the battery for a while and tried to turn it on again. Now the "Nokia"-logo shows with a white background for about 20-30 sec before it turns itself of again. I've tried to connect it to the computer again but I can't find the phone when it's not on. Any ideas of what i can do? |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Did you try searching? There are other people that have experienced the same thing and there is discussion going on in existing threads.
Searching for "nokia logo" yields at least one potentially useful result (number 3) Searching for "nokia software updater" yields at least 2 (number 3 and number 4) |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Sorry, but I've tried the solutions there by using the flasher-3.5 program, but it couldn't find any USB-device so it didn't work.

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
What OS? 32-bit or 64-bit?
|
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Windows 7 x64. Tried to disable that thing that the article told about, but it still couldn't find the phone.

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
I cant backup after the update. It says memory card not inserted.

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
@Scoob: Were you able to press F8 at bootup and select the option mentioned in the Wiki? The text of the Wiki entry appears to be wrong - according to a quick google, the option of interest is "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement".
@anapospastos: Wrong thread... |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Yeah, I may have been a little unclear, but I tried disabeling the driver signature enforcement (whatever that does). I still didn't get a connection though.

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Did you try:
- Turn off phone - Press and hold 'u' key - Connect USB-cable - When USB-icon appears in top right corner, release 'u' key This sets the N900 in update mode or something like that. Maybe that way flasher 3.5 will recognize ur N900. |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Did you try following the advice to:
- Disconnect any charger or USB connection - Power off device - Hold the letter U while reconnecting USB connection to computer (and for 5-10 seconds afterwards) If you did this correctly, it should continue to say NOKIA on the screen (with no backlight) and have part of the USB symbol in the upper right-hand corner. This will put the device in firmware update mode. |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Trust me your N900 is not bricked. The same thing happened to me and all i did was unplug the usb and rebooted the n900 and plugged it to a different usb port and it detected it and i re-ran the update.... worked.

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Ok, hold on guys. I'm going to try one more time, but this time hold the u-key until I can se the USB-icon ;)
I'll keep you updated. |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Ok. I didn't get the usb-icon, and this message popped up:
"Device driver software was not successfully installed". I'm thinking it could have something to do with that Driver Signature Enforcement i had to disable? |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Make sure you have disabled driver signature enforcement before attempting to enter firmware update mode, or else it won't work. Rebooting your computer will re-enable driver signature enforcement.
Also, make sure the device is completely powered off before reconnecting to the computer and holding U. If you leave it connected to your computer OR a charger, it will not power off completely and firmware update mode will not work. When holding U while reconnecting, do so for several seconds after you reconnected the USB cable - if you do not hold it long enough, the screen will go black and it will go into disk mode instead (won't work for firmware updates). |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Ok, here's what I did.
Haven't restarted my computer after disabeling the driver signature enforcement. The battery was out of the phone, I put it back into the phone, pressed and hold u-key while connecting the usb. Still holding the u-key for about 10-15 sec. Nothing more happened though, and a error message popped up "Device driver software was not successfully installed" and the usb connection-sound made the connected and then the disconnected-sound. The usb-icon didn't show on the N900 either. Isn't this the just the right way to do it? Can't really see what I did wrong here, but something is just not working. Tried several usb-ports too. |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Sounds correct. Only suggestion I have left is find another computer with 32-bit Windows install to try.

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
I can try on a XP tomorrow. And I think I'll call Nokia and see if they can help me if it doesn't work, but it'll probably cost some money to send it in and fix it...

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Well.. Now I've tried it on a win7 x32 too and it still didn't work, so I delivered it to nokia service. So I hope they will have it fixed in about 3 days.
Even though it didn't work, thanks for all the help! ;) |

You and I are in the same situation - Nokia Software Updater sucks donkey balls, messed up at the end of the updating and now the device is completely bricked. Doesn't matter if I have a full battery charge or not, no way I've been able to find so far to reflash it. |

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Well.. that sucks.. They should have disabled NSU for N900 maybe. Anyways, I as you can see I gave up and turned to Nokia for help. They're going to fix it, and free of charge (warranty).

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
HI,
First of all I updated the firmware. Nothing related to the usb but yesterday somehow I could not get my N900 to life after I shut it down for a reboot. It was dead. I removed the cover and took out the battery and replaced the battery. Now I succeeded to make the reboot. Rgds Watergate |

Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
I had the same problem guys, i was updating the phone via NSU then it was stuck at 1sec for ages, an i was like thats odd. Then I checked here and other ppl had the same problem. So this is what I did.
1. First I disconnected the phone from the usb cable and removed the battery. 2. booted into windows xp pro (32bit) 3. Downloaded the flasher tool and the firmware (to date, you cant dwnload the new firmware from there yet, it still only has up till the last release so i stuck with that which is 2009.42-11 4.Flashed the phone via command prompt using the flasher tool using online guide for flashing, which worked like a charm on win xp 32. I tried it on the xp 64bit and it wasnt working, couldnt pick up the phone. So if your having problems then try a linux os (ive heard it works great on that) or flash it on a 32bit version of windows. 5. doesn't take long for it to flash it, and it will power on itself and bring up the regional settings screen and thats you sorted! if Ive missed anything out or if anyone still stuck then let me know. I would like to know if anyone knows why people have had this problem when updating their n900 with the new firmware? also why is it only a few people that have had this? is there a work around? Any answers or info would be much appreciated as I can't find anything on this issue. Thanks |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
Like I said erlier badboyuk, the computer couldn't see the device and I didn't get the USB-logo on my N900 either. I tried it on a XP x32, Win7 x32 and Win7 x64 and none of them worked. So I gave up and gave the job to some nokia people :p
Anyways, hope to have it back in a few day, now that Ovi store is "kinda" open and all... |
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
hmm that is really odd for that to happen........Well i hope you get your phone back soon and all is good :)
|
Re: N900 dead after attempt at updating software
It was perfect timing too :p Caus the OVI store was "kinda open" that day and now the new update is out and all. But, should have it by tuesday at least.
