Mp3 player that plays files by folders+subfolders?

Does such exist? As an ex iPod user I'd really fancy having either my own playlists which I could create & handle on my PC, or alternatively playing the files on the phone via picking a folder and it would play all files in subfolders. My media collection is quite extensive and seen alot of trouble to tag it all correctly, and picking one genre and artist just won't cut it. With the capacity of N900 being quite good I bet I'm not alone with the problem.

edit: MediaBox is the solution.

MediaBox (currently in extras-testing) can do this.

[INSERT OBLIGATORY EXTRAS-TESTING WARNING HERE] ;)

I had some problems while trying MediaBox, mainly it telling me everything is synced in under a second and no media appears. Also using the filebrowser in MediaBox alot of folders are missing (like My Documents only shows Photos). I'll try a fresh install later tonight I guess.

Hmm, if My Documents only shows Photos then something must really be missing. Is your filemanager able to browse these folders?
Maybe your device was attached via USB cable to a computer at that time? In that case the stuff under My Documents is not accessible on the device.

The reason I didn't see the correct structure was due I forgot my phone in Mass Storage mode while it was simply recharging, sorry. Now it works and I've managed to create playlists from folders, superb. I'll now go look around in other threads if I can somehow remove the video/images etc from the shelf view since I really only need this for mp3 and shoutcast playback. :)

Video, etc cannot be removed from the shelf, but making this configurable is not a bad idea. Thanks.

Alright, hope it's configurable at some point then, thanks for the help!

Hi, I am having trouble with my media player on the n900. It used to be all right, but now it can't read my sounds and video folder. Any ideas ???

I'm really annoyed that Nokia has removed this nice feature from the music player. Nokia 770 (the first maemo device) had the folder selection in the default music player!

I usually organize my music by folders so not being able to play songs by folder is really frustrating.

I was disappointed to lose selection by folder as well, but, partly because I keep my mp3 files on the SD card, I now have faster access to a particular track on the n900 than on the n800 or n810. On n8xx with OS2008, I have to drill down from the very top every time I change folder or start the media player.

On the n900, make all the folders you like, anywhere on the device. In each folder, do:
Code:

ls *.mp3 > playlistname.m3u
I use foldername as playlistname, but do whatever works for you. The playlist names will show up in the imported namelists for the built in n900 media player. The playlists can be created on another computer before copying them to the n900.

The order in the playlists can be changed with a text editor. Various options to to ls can also customize the order (such as by date or reverse date).

For subfolders, each can have its own playlist, but the media player does not present playlists with any kind of hierarchy.

What you describe seems to be what happened to me earlier today. I found a post that suggested entering the following command in the Terminal application in order to clear the media logs so that they can be recreated from scratch:

tracker-processes -r
