[Maemo 5] Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

Following on from the MyMenu thread, this is to discuss the new Catorise application which creates, and maintains, a categorised menu rather than the "Nokia + more..." menu which comes out of the box.

Not intentionally ;-)

If possible, it'd be very useful if you could send me the following:
  • a screenshot
  • the /etc/xdg/menus/hildon.menu file
  • the /opt/catorise/menu file

Thanks in advance.

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

Looks great, I've had my eyes on MyMenu but I like the new App Manager's icons more so I'll go with this one. I'll try to report back any weird things I encounter while using it.

Edit: My more button is also placed in a "random" spot.

(let me know if you can't see the image).

Edit2: Fennec shows up fine under Network but not microB. I can only find it under "All".

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

I imagine you've figured this out by now, but anything in the ovi repo is categorized under "user/hidden" which is why they aren't getting put into the correct categories. Perhaps you could scrape the ovi store, or use RPC/JSON?

edit:
Seems to hold true for anything in the Nokia repo as well.

You can attach them directly to the forum by clicking "Manage Attachments" under "Additional Options" when replying to a topic

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

Just installed it, looks great. Will manual edits to /opt/catorise/menu to change the categories of some apps be overwritten in future updates, or is there a more preferred way to do this?

Thanks again, great job.

Has it been put available again? If so...where?

Thanx

this is a different project its not MyMenu, its Catorise.
both are great though and solve simlar problem.
its available in extras-devel but only mess in there if your know the risks and know how to correct your device in the event something go's wrong

Found it...it's working fine, I just found that some icons were placed in places I wouldn't place them.
Can I customise it?

Gr8 job!

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

Both this and MyMenu are very helpful... I don't want all your work to be for naught, but I hope that Nokia has considered addressing the existing poor state of application organization in an official capacity.

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

All hail to Jaffa!

But for some reason I won't get orange icons when using Digital Life -theme. Instead I get the default Blue icons.

Edit: also new installed apps won't show up nowhere else than "all" category". I'm not sure if reboot fixes this or not, but I just installed tear-browser and it won't show up anywhere else than "all" category.

"More" category is positioned at the top right corner also.

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

just installed some new apps from extras to test if they get put in a category and i confirm they just get put in all folder, rebooting did not change anything.
so it seems to only be categorising apps already installed before catorise

So we need somekind "refresh the menu" -button or otherwise it should be done manually by some background process?

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

I installed Caterise and it seems to work fine otherwise but every time I reboot my device the theme changes partially to default. By partially I mean that the background images are kept but all the colors and such are back to default blue. Nice app though, customizable icons would be nice.

Indeed, that's the plan. Is there an RPC/JSON API? If not, I've already worked out how to do the screen scraping; but something more robust is desirable.

/opt/catorise/menu can be edited to shuffle things around and they won't get overwritten (unless you put them in other or an invalid section).

Once edited, you can run - as root - /opt/catorise/catorise to regenerate.

It's supposed to be done on application install/uninstall using dpkg triggers and, indeed, it works for me. If you install something using apt-get, as root, in X Terminal does it show a line of the form:

Code:

Catorise: Updating menu structure...

the theme keep changing to blue default is a bug in ovi store themes

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

v0.0.2 is on its way to Extras-devel. Changelog:
  • Ignore location of 'other' items when reloading cached menu.
  • Add an 'Ovi' category pending better categorisation of Ovi-sourced items.
  • Fix theme handling; credit also to Marcin Juszkiewicz for a patch to do the same.
  • Fix multi-sectioned .desktop files (e.g. Web); credit also to hrw again for a patch to do the same.

Upcoming work:
  • Use .desktop file categories, if present (the community chose the package sections on Maemo to align with the desktop menu categories on purpose :-))
  • Try and register a DBus service to pick up theme changes.
  • Use the localisation strings from App Manager (although wrapping is an issue in the application menu; in that it doesn't).
  • Further Ovi categorisation work.
  • Work out why some people get "More..." ordered alphabetically.
  • Work out why auto-rerun on application install/uninstall isn't working for some people.

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

You could just get the info through apt-cache show $pkg-name :)

As I understand it, PR1.2 will eliminate "More" and put all installed applications on one, long, scrollable, "page". Actually grouping applications will be Fixed in Harmattan.

Yeah, we've hit that point already. Whee.

What info? That's exactly what Catorise does for applications from Extras; however applications from Ovi only have a section of user/hidden and no additional categorisation information AFAICS.

ruskie 2010-01-13 14:42

Re: Catorise: auto-sort applications menu

I thought it was hidden/whatevercategory

And shouldn't the category for the app be in the desktop file anyway?

No. Level, Bounce Evolution and Angry Birds all have Section: user/hidden. All, apart from Leve have Priority: optional too, FWIW.

Can be. But I'm not aware of a single Maemo application which does so at the moment.

from description - it will reverse to maemo default once you uninstall the application

Ok, thank's for the info.

And about the reversing, wouldn't it be better if Catorise took a backup of the user's menu configure file during install and restored that during uninstall? In case someone has made a custom menu instead the original.

Reverted fine for me, but I didn't have a custom menu created before the install.

Off Topic: if your confident with editing a file theres a fix here for theme problem http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...ighlight=theme

Is there a possibility to have some static program icons in the first screen (for example contacts and web browser?)

That would be super!

It's possible (the menu can be customised however you want), but it's not something that Catorise currently facilitates. It's main reason is to implement #3822.

Someone said:

so I thought it puts back the original.

Just confirming that the new version fixes the problem with nokia apps not showing up in categories. (eg, "Web" now shows up in network ,etc)

When changing themes, I saw nothing significant (when running dbus-monitor) other than applets' osso_contexts being initialized due to hildon-home reloading the applets. But maybe I wasn't looking hard enough...

In a test program, connecting to "notify::gtk-theme-name" on gtk_settings_get_default() worked, but only if this program had created a window...

/home/user/.osso/current-gtk-theme always seems to point to default; the only thing I've noticed is /etc/hildon/theme now points to the new theme after changing it.
