Ovi Maps not working after PR1.1 update??? (Maemo5/N900)

Ovi Maps not working after PR1.1 update???

When I click on the maps icon, it shows the Ovi maps splash screen and the status bar just slides back and forth. Been like this for 5+minutes. Restarted phone and same problem.

Has anyone else come accross this problem?

And yes OVi maps did work before the update, although I do not know if it worked after PR1.01

Test internet connection to OVI maps

1. open X-Term
2. type "telnet maps.ovi.com 80"

If you doesn't see word "Connected" - check you Internet connection.
If you see.... well, they are overloaded today - many people test it.

Thanks guys, I guess im gonna have to reflash the device. There's no way to just uninstall maps and reinstall that is there?

Re: Ovi Maps not working after PR1.1 update??? (Maemo5/N900)

ok finally was able to reflash my device and still no go. telnet works, says connected to maps.ovi.com.

reflashed with USA version, however still sits at the loading screen, 10+ and still nothing. Just a Black screen with the text "Maps", a blue bar going back and forth slowly and the "ovi nokia" icon with the text "maps.ovi.com" why?

In this state, what is it doing? is it trying to configure a file, trying to get a connection/link to sat, what?!! I wish i knew what it is doing at this point. Maybe then i could replace/edit a file or.....somethin' i dont know but im turning green......Hulk green and i dont wanna smash this little piece of ****, but its getting close.

Edit: I can ssh into my n900, Im looking at maploader in "/home/user/MyDocs/cities" and its empty, is it suppose to be? diskcache has folders 0-9,a-f and some other files

Re: Ovi Maps not working after PR1.1 update??? (Maemo5/N900)

can anybody SSH into there device and tell me if there is anything in the maploader folder.

And no offense, i know it works but i need a resolution.

EDIT:
ok, what does this mean:

in xterm, running "top" while ovi maps is stuck on the load screen,
pid=2727 ppid=1 user=user stat=S RSS=39104 mem%=15.8 %CPU=2.3 and Command= /usr/bin/nokia-maps /usr/share/nokia-maps/html/index.html 2>/dev/null

I am able to launch the Maps and is working properly and fast, but i cant see the "track me" button while routing anymore. Is the feature removed?

I experience the same problem too.

I figure out this might be related to the language / locale you're using. I've been using Chinese (Hong Kong) (zhhk) and Ovi Maps takes forever to load. Once I switch my Device Language back to English (US) (en-US), I'm able to launch Ovi Maps again.

I am pretty sure that I could launch Ovi Maps in the 42.1 firmware with the Chinese locale. I'm not sure if this is a new bug for the PR1.1 firmware.

Oh, nice.
But a better sign or a text should help us to know how this works ! :D

Re: Ovi Maps not working after PR1.1 update??? (Maemo5/N900)

OK, so apparently I had to not only reflash my firmware but the eMMC as well. Apparently a configuration got screwed resulting in me not being able to run "maps" (perhaps this maybe due to the language local, like amandalam mentioned, although i never had a problem before nor did i ever change locales or files for ovi maps, strange)
Anyway i reflashed the eMMC (which puts the device back to "out of box state" with all your settings and configurations removed. I thought just flashing the firmware did this but it doesn't. Flashing the firmware will update the software but allow for your certain app configurations/contacts to be saved and never really completely wiped) and all is good.

I have noticed tho that now when i look in /Home/user/MyDocs/cities/diskcache, there is no longer a Client Index folder, Premium folder and the a file named qf is not there. But this maybe due to the fact that eMMC images do not contain preloaded maps, but the application will work fine and that i would manually have to add the maps i would need.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_t...ng_your_device
"Flashing the eMMC in the N900

Flasing the eMMC resets the MyDocs folder contents to factory settings. N900 users don't need to reflash the eMMC of their device. If you are reading this it's probably because you got a pre-production device e.g. in the Maemo Summit. If you have a sales unit and you have problems with your eMMC you should contact Nokia Care.

Also note that any backups created in your MyDocs area will need to be copied off the device to be safe across an eMMC flash as the MyDocs area and other partitions on /dev/mmcblk0 will be erased.

Note that the eMMC images available do not contain pre-loaded maps. If you reflash your eMMC you will lose them (the Maps application will work as usual but you will need to download the maps needed). "

Anyway, just a little FYI on the situation.

I'm very agree with you.

I have the same Problem, and once I switch my N900 language from 'zh-CN' to 'en-US', the Ovi Maps runs!

I looked into my setting, there is no zhhk option. How did you do it?
TIA,

We installed the Chinese language pack. :)

Re: Ovi Maps not working after PR1.1 update??? (Maemo5/N900)

I think the problem is not related to anything in the /home/user/MyDocs/cities directory... I tried to rename the entire cities directory and Ovi Maps still keep loading forever...

I seem to be missing the Satellite mode's textures on PR1.1.

You didn't have to reflash the whole eMMC, Ovi Maps store its data in ~/MyDocs/cities, and just like with the s60 series, deleting that folder should fix any maps problem you might have - Ovi Maps will rebuild it if it cannot find it.

For locale and translations:

The Package Name is "N900-i18n-zh_CN"
the Description is "POSIX locales and translations for zh-CN"
the Version is "20100115-r294"
the Size is "2.25MB"
the Repo is "Maemo Extras-devel", I guest. Because i don't know how to determine which repo it belongs to...

For Input Chinese:

The Package Name is "MSCIM" & "MSCIMgooglepinyin"

By the way, I deleted the "/home/user/MyDocs/cities", and the Maps still Unable to open...

Re: Ovi Maps not working after PR1.1 update??? (Maemo5/N900)

In additional, Because the Maps runs when i set the locale to ‘en_US’ in 'Settings', I tried to forge a ‘en_US’ environment by changing the environment variablies in my Chinese locale.

I run “LANG=en_US /usr/bin/nokia-maps”.....loading forever..
I run "LC_ALL=en_US /usr/bin/nokia-maps".....loading forever..
I run "export LANG=en_US" then "/usr/bin/nokia-maps"......loading forever..
I run "export LC_ALL=en_US" then "/usr/bin/nokia-maps"......loading forever..

I thought it only relate to the environment variablies, but now, It seems not so easy...

Now, I have no idea.....

Now, It worked after i updated the package "N900-I18n-zh_CN" to "20090119-r304" .

Great!!!

Re: Ovi Maps not working after PR1.1 update??? (Maemo5/N900)

I somehow figured out how to resolve the locale-related issue.

It's somehow related to the locale-specific files missing from this directory: /usr/share/nokia-maps/html/medos/i18n/

If you can't find the locale directory you're using, try to copy the files from en directory and rename to your current locale code. :)
