Dead after the PR1.1 failed update. Returning my N900 to Nokia.

I called Nokia. I was given a reference number. They want me to return to buy.com but doubt the online store will accept it since I took the UPC and send in for rebate. As per their return policy on website all has to be intact including UPC. If there's something missing their warehouse will return it back to me. I explain to nokia about the rebate and they told me to try.

I'm calling Nokia again for return/repair. How long does it take for them to repair?

Also should I remove the clear protector on my phone? I have the full body protector wrap around the phone. Hate to remove it since it was a pain applying the plastic. Will it void the warranty?

I checked your messages and looks like that you have tried to reflash, but you didnt give helpers any feedback except that it doesn't work. I would really much like to help you more, but I need information.

- What Os are you running and is it 32 or 64bit
- Do you have ANY nokia software installed on your computer?
- Do you have any other devices (exept mouse and keyboard) attached to your usb. Even usb hubs?

Please describe in detail that where it fails when you are trying to use CMD flash utility?

http://wiki.maemo.org/Flasher#Settin..._flashing_mode

OS is vista 32 bit

I initially used the nokia software updater. Status was 15 mins left (but it took more than 1 hour), then 1 sec left (waited for 2 hours) and stuck on the 1 sec. left.

I followed what I was told on reflash. download and install the flasher. Download the file. Press "u" key and plug usb. Nokia word without backlight appeared and usb icon. On PC start, all programs, maemo, cmd flasher, then flasher-3.5.exe -F (the long file name) -f -R (hit enter), the prompt me to allow or cancel. Click allowed. After that a very brief screen of less than 1 sec appeared (couldn't catch what's on there). Then nothing happened. phone wasn't doing anything. All I saw was the steady status light and the nokia word without backlight. Tried couple of times but got the same result. Now even if I press the "U" key and insert the usb I get a blank screen. waited and nothing happens. Release the U key the phone vibrates, status light turns on steadily, goes off, vibrates, nokia word on screen with no backlight. Does it over and over again.

Do i need to remove the body protector (clear plastic protector) I installed/applied on the phone? I worried it might void the warranty.

It could be that your battery is not fully charged and it refuses to flash. btw. Did you tried to take off battery for awhile and do whole process again?

[offtopic]
Almost every single person who has come here to ask help for bricked device tells that they were using NSU. I think that there is something really fckd up there.

i took the battery 15- 20 mins ago. In this situation how do i know the battery is charging?

When I plug the usb, the status light (yellow/orange) will remain on for a while, the phone will vibrate, then after couple of minutes the status light will go off, then there are times the screen will blank (the nokia screen without backlight disappear). repeat the same process over and over. So i don't know if my phone's charging.

Also before i did the update through NSU the battery was almost full.

this is the same situation I'm in, and I'm currently waiting for a desktop battery charger to come from eBay, (which won't be until next week). My phone does the same thing, just reboots. Hold down 'u' doesn't put it into flash mode... so yours is probably the battery too

I'll get a desktop charger from ebay. so it does drain the battery that much from updating? I had the battery almost full.

Is the low battery the reason why nothing happens when I click "allow" to run reflash program but nothing happens?

added to say: The sellers from Hong Kong and I'm in NY, USA :(

@Bugslife

I sorted by 'nearest seller' and paid $9.00 for a US seller. I hope the battery life is our problem.

If I had a dollar every time I helped someone who couldn't flash/repair their device because the battery was flat even though they thought it was charged, I'd have about $10..

that asides, I don't think the phone will charge the battery unless the OS is booted.. I think it is deceptive.. and flashing (or doing anything with flasher-3.5) becomes more and more unreliable the lower the battery..

I'm lucky, gf has a 5800 so I always have a backup.. but so far, I've not needed to flash

Then they should have provided a desktop charger and extra battery. Just Freakin' Crazy!

Bugslife, what I didn't understand is where did you have a prompt, you're not supposed to see a prompt, maybe you mean the vista UAC and maybe that's causing your problems. Maybe yous should turn it off. After that reboot and try again, there shouldn't be any flashing cmd.

Or, run as administrator for the cmd prompt...

not really prompt(ed) what I mean is "it asked me to allow or cancel" the program I intend to run (the usual vista way of asking before proceeeding).

I probably need to charge the battery (before another attempt) since everytime I press the "u" key to insert the usb I now get blank screen.

I hope the desktop charger I just bought (from ca) arrive soon .

That's what I meant, you should disable that or run it as administrator (both links above you).

bugslife, any reason you are using the command line manual update process and not the Nokia Software Updater application?

Installation stalled for hours when i used the Nokia Software Updater that's why I used the flasher to recover my phone. I'm waiting for the desktop charger I bought to charge the battery and try reflashing. Since monday's a holiday guess have to wait a couple of days for the charger to arrive in the mail.

I hope I can go back to the firmware 44. I don't want to use the the 51. Since it's a failed firmware update hoping I can go back to 44.

Not normally, but you said you left it trying to finish for several hours, so that might have drained it.

Also, the battery meter isn't completely accurate so it might not have been as full as it looked.

Depending on which parts of PR1.1 succeeded, you may find you can't use the older firmware. Specifically, if the phone/3G firmware part updated, then the rest of PR1.1 must be used with it. But I don't see any harm in trying older firmware first, only that it might not work.

stuck with the update stating 1 sec left and waited for almost 2 hours on that until I pull the plug.

I can't go back using the older firmware? why? I don't want to use the current 51 firmware since many have experienced problem with it.

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6350#c42

* take battery out
* insert USB cable (to boot device with charging boot reason)
* insert battery & put back cover back
* remove USB cable

But I dont really know why my N900 is back , I remove the battery, take it back, remove ,... suddenly it works

I can't go back using the older firmware? why? I don't want to use the current 51 firmware since many have experienced problem with it.

The 51 update includes an updated firmware for the GSM chipset. This is incompatible with previous OS firmware releases (and they don't include the old GSM firmware, so it can't be flashed back). The result of this is that installing an OS firmware prior to 51 will leave you missing all phone functionality (you can still use WLAN, etc though).

update me with your phone. I have trouble with reflashing mine. i always get the msg below. Battery was fully charge from desktop charger. I'm using the USA version update. It's like the update wouldn't go throught. Not sure if another code or command needed to push through the update bu I check the firmware name and it's exact same I was typing on the cmd.

That's because you've still not got the firmware file in the same directory as the flasher-3.5.exe.

Will move it out of the directory then and will try.

Well good news, mine flashed first try no problem! :)

Code:

flasher-3.5.exe -F RX51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin -f -R
I did 42-11 (USA) because thats what I tried to flash with NSU, now my phone is back up and running!

I just finished flashing. Thank goodness! I flashed with 51 (usa) since the update failed with firmware 51.Someone said I can't go back (the easy way) with 42 when I already initiated 51. I finally able to flashed it by renaming the filename. Someone at Nokia board helped me.

Now I have to check for 51 bugs. I'm hoping there is none. All my stuff in there are gone.
