Re: Android on N900

Should be possible to port Nitdroid to the N900...
I'm not holding my breath, but if it does happen, I guess it will be something that just comes up with an working open beta out of the blue..

Re: Android on N900

I know it's possible to do.. I just don't see why...

May as well get a cheaper Android phone that has nearly identical hardware and have android actually be optimized for it..

Re: Android on N900?

because android has maybe a lot more apps ?

Of the phones that have a similar screen, I don't think any of them have a comparable hardware keyboard.

So the keyboard is worth $400 to you?

The droid has nearly identical hardware.. just a rather crappy keyboard... for much less than an N900.

Re: Android on N900?

But what if someone already has an N900? Is getting another phone to try Android really worth it?

Well.. that makes a little more sense.. but IIRC, the NitDroid (tablet port of Android) could not get on the official google Market (unless that was worked out) - So even a port of it for the N900 will not likely get you full android or the apps.

It would probably be better to ask a friend to let them play with their phone for a bit to see if you like it.

It wouldn't cost much...$150 for new accounts, and you get that back if you return it in 30 days, along with the contract cancellation.

Re: Android on N900?

Looks like someone has ported Android to the N900

Now we just need to get VMWare to release the ARM software they demoed on the N800 a while back, and you could run both (and Ubuntu-ARM and/or Mer) at the same time.

Re: Android on N900?

Yea but the port hasn't been finished yet.

As you can see in the video most things aren't working properly, it still requires a lot of work and the maker needs a LOT of respect for doing this work.

Re: Android on N900?

Do you think Android (and its apps) will ever become fully functional on the N900?

titi974 2010-01-30 16:52

Re: Android on N900?

i seriously hope so ! since android can run onto the device, it's basically supposed to run its apps ;)
but we need to wait for the port !! and i hope i'll go through his problem with the touchsreen driver :P

Re: Android on N900?

i wudnt buy another phone jst to use android. Yeah it looks not bad but until there is a far superior handset than the n900 with android then its worth considering otherwise stick with ur n900 as all these cheap android phones aint worth it unless ur a dumb chick

Re: Android on N900?

Hope this will be real, and not just a demo. Really looking forward it can run fully functional Andriod on N900

Re: Android on N900?

I suspect that it is because the build quality of the N900 and the memory capacity are far better that the majority of competitors. HTC who make the nexus and the G1 et all do not seem to get the point that more memory means better performance and as yet have not learned the lessons learned from teh G1 where it can now no longer be updated (easily) to Android V2 because there is not enough system memory available to handle the update!

I do hope that an official port of android to the n900 is forthcoming as I like the os and the hardware so it would be a win-win situation (in my opinion!)

Best Regards,

The question is not "Why port the android to n900" The question is "Why not port android to n900?" Do not forget that we are (kind of) linux community.

It's for both. If you read the last posts in the thread, you'll see he has received his n900 and is expecting to start developing for it next week.

I know - just stating that it already has been done, so it just means that there is nothing standing in the way of dual boot!

dj_steve: I am really excited to know that we may have a proper android port. but i'd like to know which version of android? 2.1? 1.6?
thanks!

Wouldn't a virtualized android or just enough of dalvik on maemo be a better alternative though? Think like debian-chroot. I think this would be a much better overall experience.

You still have to rework the entire GUI rendering mechanism. Android does not use X so there's that much more integration work. Not nearly as straightforward as Easy Debian is.

cheers for that, yes android renders direct to framebuffer without x being needed so it would be far more work to hack dalvik etc to run above maemo not to mention a huge waste of resources

most certainly 2.1r2 though may start off with donut (1.6) to test things

Re: Android on iPhone Happened.. Android on N900?

I would simply like to run some android apps (and maby even widgets) on Maemo . . . . I really like Maemo vs Android I just envy a few of the Apps

(simply is really the wrong term here I know building some sort of compatibility layer between Maemo and Android wouldn't be easy but if it ever happens it would be a truely spectacular thing)
