Set a ringtone per contact?

Is it possible to set a ringtone different than the default ringtone for a contact? I'd like to have a distinctive ring for family.

Nope I don't think this is possible at this time ..

Thanks for the quick answer. Hopefully this is added in the future.

I wonder if a hacky way of doing this, as I suggested in this post: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...340#post456340 may work? I have neither the time nor python skills to try it myself, unfortunately

I'm sure that someone will develop an app for doing that, hope to see it in Extras soon.

i wonder why this is not possible?! i'm thinking of this feature for years now, it feels so elemental.
technically this shouldnt be a problem at all. i mean, your phone does regocnize WHO is calling you when you have some on your contactlist, so playing a specific ringtone shouldnt be a problem.

In fact it is not a problem at all, but Nokia has chosen not to include that feature; we could write an approximately infinite list of basical and obvious features Nokia has not implemented in the N900 by default, such as MMS support, an FM Radio, voice recognition for calling and opening apps, selection of the video recording quality, some SIM services, etc... All these funcions were present (by default) even in the worst of the Symbian devices, but aren't actually in th flagship of Maemo devices. It was probably a time problem for Nokia, it had to quickly sell an iPhone rival and it let some minor apps to the Maemo.org community :)

Surely the biggest difficulty came in creating the N900 as a hardware item and the OS system.
Once those two were created I would ahve imagined features such as ringtones per contact/FM Radio/proper call logging etc etc would be an easy thing to implement by a competent programmer?

Yes, they are definitely easy things to implement by a competent Nokia programmer, but even the easiest software needs time. Time for developing, time for testing, etc... And time is what Nokia lacks of. Once those two things you have mentioned were created, Nokia's only thought was to imediately sell them, letting minor easy things to the future OR to Maemo.org community.

part of me also feels that it's so they can give you updates .....with strings(thing you don't desire) attached to them.

Is there a bug and/or brainstorm item for this?

Sounds like a quite reasonable request, so if not, do add one.

This is Bug 5356, but that's now been closed "MOVED" to Brainstorm. I don't know if an actual Brainstorm item exists for it yet.

I've added one now. Please vote for it. It's insane this functionality doesn't exist.

I released an app for this: http://blog.barisione.org/2010-07/cu...your-contacts/
For some background on why this is a bit more difficult to implement than what you could expect see: http://blog.barisione.org/2010-07/how-hard-can-it-be/

Hi!

Great Idea! Unfortunately your application makes the telephony almost unusable.

A good point it that is working!

Why unusable? I called myself from another phone. It took me many seconds to my N900 to show me that someone is calling, even the connection was established from about 9-10 seconds. The problem was persistent event the contact who is calling me doesn't have an assigned ring-tone but the default one!

The concept is OK! The ring-tone is changed for the desired contact but the phone application is much much much slowed! Do you think that this could be corrected? Otherwise your application is useless!

Another thing! After I assigned my first personalized ring-tone the contact application was hanged with an error (Strange! Cause I never seen contact application giving any error!)

Another important thing! Testing I discovered that calling my N900 sometimes I got Busy-Tone! Impossible!

You can make from this concept a reliable application??

Thanks for all your efforts until now!

EDIT: Another Good point is that the application is integrated with the contacts one!

Re: Set a ringtone per contact?

i dont know why someone would really need this feature. you can assign each contact a special picture, i guess that's enough to recognize who is calling you...
or maybe you're just one of the guys who wants to brag about his cool and new ringtone in the bus xD for me i don't care what ringtone i have, as long i know that someone is calling me :)

Simply because the pictures can not be heard from the pocket, Dude!;)

In barisione's defence, he did explain how a feature like this might slow down the time before the phone starts ringing at http://blog.barisione.org/2010-07/how-hard-can-it-be/, depending on how busy the device is.

Re: Set a ringtone per contact?

I wonder if there's a way to un-nice of whatever phone processes there is while increasing the nice factor for the processes that are say... taking over 60% CPU load. That would likely make the phone app more responsive.

As it is right now, it seems to be treated as another application. And if your system is under load, it, like all other processes compete for the strained resources leading to a bunch of problems like missed phone calls, the UI being laggy, the race condition some people experience with custom ringtones.

You don't have to defend the man! I'm not accusing him! He is the only who tried to do something! The concept is fine!

My primary concern is that the application, as it is, is unusable! Maybe there is another way... Maybe it can be improved....because I cant simply use my phone!

I deleted it already and I promise to test it again when another version will be available! For the moment I better throw my phone out than using it!

Re: Set a ringtone per contact?

As I said on the blog you case should just be a normal bug and not the application not working in general.

Re: Set a ringtone per contact?

[QUOTE=puiradu;745990]Hi!

Great Idea! Unfortunately your application makes the telephony almost unusable.

[...]

puiradu,

i had the same problem with my N900;
between the moment i pressed the call button on another phone (calling the nbr. of the N900) to the 1st ringtome sound i took nearly 20 secondes :-o :@
on a Nokia 1200 something it takes 7 / SEVEN seconds :X
my 1st reaction was to uninstall "Custom ringtones for your contacts"; no luck, still nearly 20 seconds :@
removed some pidgin plug-ins i had installed to be able to call GMail contacts (with VOIP);
nada
eventually i removed RECALLER, an app that can be set to automatically record any phone (or VOIP) conversation.
this improved things, but meanwhile i had switched from a custom AAC ringtome i had created on http://audio.online-convert.com/convert-to-aac to one of the N900's default ringtome
10 seconds :-(
not quite the 7 sec. on the 1200, but, hell, still better then 20 sec. right?
then, i switched the default ringtome back to my 30 seconds AAC file... now i'm nearly down to 7 seconds
and it stayed that way after i reinstalled Custom ringtones for your contacts" with three different ringtomes (a different default & 2 personal ones)

so, yep, if you get more then 15 sec before the phone starts ringing:
- make sure to use a small ACC sound file (mine are 450 to 500 KBs) a 3 MB MP3 may take a lot more time, yup
- check whether any application / addon may be delaying things
- reboot your N900 from time to time; it may be Linux, but it seems to be haunted by memory leaks :C

Re: Set a ringtone per contact?

@misterc: I don't wanna disappoint you but with the latest version of custom ringtones the delay is by almost a second and the good thing is that the sound is heard instantly in the moment of the connection. Another thing is that I use mp3 ringtones (my main ringtone is an entire song).
If i uninstall the app the ringtone and the UI are perfect synchronized and are shown instantly in the moment of the connection with no delay!
Another thing: I have pidgin plugin installed but it don't seem to affect the ringtone. To be honest i don't see how could do it!
Good luck!

have you tried wav?

.edit
ignore that. It does it by default.

Here is bug report. I think there is updated version that you can test and report how it works.

..edit
Actually read blog comments first fully
http://blog.barisione.org/2010-08/ringtoned-021/
New version should work, but developer says that actually rigtone is FASTER than UI :)

And btw. Dear fellow devel tester. May i remind you that you are using devel-repository software which means exactly what it says in the maemo wiki page:

And please
READ IT!

1 Attachment(s)
add extras/extras-testing/extras-devel catalogues
search "custom ringtone" on app. manager/ faster app and you will find an app by Marco B. :)

NO!
Do NOT add extras-testing and extras-devel.

per-contact-ringtone is in Extras.

Devel and testing packages are NOT recommended for end users.
