How do I backup *all* the data in my N900 prior to updating ?
Hey guys .. I had a question regarding backing up data in my N900 prior to updating to the latest updated firmware ... The NSU Software is telling me that *everything* will be removed from my phone (odd!!), and so I need to backup all the stuff in it prior to updating ..
The Backup software in the N900 AFAIK only backs up small things such as program settings, contacts, etc ... But how do I backup *everything* ?? e.g. music, videos, conversations, all the settings, all programs installed .. ? I mean this way, everytime Nokia rolls out an update, we would have to start using our N900s completely from scratch .. ?! :p |

If you have anything on the card it will be safe. For everything else just connect the phone in mass storage mode and then drag and drop to your PC or memory card.
I re-flashed my N900 this morning and did a back up and restore. It only to 30 mins to have my phone back to the state it was before. If you do an over the air update (OTA) then everything will be as it was before anyway. It is always best to keep critical data on the memory card, and you can then sync that with your PC on a regular basis and never have to worry about loosing it. |

Make sure you are on a decent wifi connection and then go to applications and click on update. The latest firmware update will be there and negate the need to re-install everything.

I don't have any memory card inserted ... everything is currently on the phone's built in 32GB memory ..
I would like to just update using the phone itself, but when I go into the App Manager and select the Maemo 5 update from there, it just tells me that I need to update using the PC Software .. :( Any way around this ? |

That usually indicates a conflict - see http://wiki.maemo.org/OTA_to_PR1.1_troubleshooting for some possible solutions.

I updated up with the NSU and did a back up with the Backup app. After update, I restored and everything was there, except applications. The application mgr then kicks in and asks whether you want to restore the apps and then does it perfectly.

the /home/user/MyDocs partition should be left untouched by NSU (at least with standard partitioning) - the backup utility even copies backup files there... also /opt files are currently untouched... (and after I did reflash, even /home/user seemed unchanged to me ....)

OK I think I have figured out why I can't install over the air .. seems that I don't have enough space in the N900's 227 MB partition ( I only have about 28 MB available here) .. How can I see what is eating the space from this partition, and then free that space up ?

Re: How do I backup *all* the data in my N900 prior to updating ?
you dont have to start over unless you have some faulty software that you downloaded from one of the repositories and the update says you need to connnect to NSU or flasher.
the updates work great....dl them and then they install and your unit is updated. otherwise, if you clean boot, just go to your good backup that you created and restore from it. you should be fine. |

Re: How do I backup *all* the data in my N900 prior to updating ?
you probably have software installed that is using your rootfs space. the last update required about 40mb there.
Try the following command in X-terminal to see all three partitions: df -h / /home /home/user/MyDocs There is a space between the three folders "/", "/home" and "/home/user/MyDocs" in the command. this will show you how much space you have on your rootfs. you can also read up on this: http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopi...41028&start=45 |
Re: How do I backup *all* the data in my N900 prior to updating ?
I read that the 32GB internal storage isn't touched when the firmware is updated. Is this correct?
I don't think they would just wipe the storage just because of a firmware update. |
