My repository with system updates is now on-line.

As I am tired of waiting for nokia Maemo team to release fixes for fixed bugs I decided to create such fixed packages by my own. Result is "system-updates" repository which so far contains only Modest with fixes for bug #6541 (Uses of "Odp:" instead of "Re:" in email subject).

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

Why the "2009.51" subdir? Is it for the 2009.51 release?

Hrw 2010-01-18 18:42

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

Yes, it is for 2009.51 release. I do not know will it work or not with older firmware drops and have no idea will it work with next ones. Modest for example will be at 3.2.xx version probably in PR 1.2

jebba 2010-01-18 18:56

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

So the idea is to have new subdirs and rebuilds for each release? Would be cool if the repo could handle PR1 as well. For example, extras, extras-testing, extras-devel don't need separate subdirs for each minor release. If it was built against the original SDK it would work for sure (and I would guess it would work with the "latest" SDK too, but I haven't confirmed this).

I really like what you are doing, it is definitely needed. How would you like others to contribute? I have a one-liner I'd like to fix in glibc :)

Thanks.

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

I plan to use only latest firmware on my n900 so when 2010.31 will get released I will not support anything older as I created those packages for my own use but decided to share them with other people.

If other developers wants to do updates of other packages then go ahead. I can probably host them here but will need to create kind of README which will give informations who made which package.

I do not want to make it big as I do not have too much space on my hosting.

And one more thing: Modest hrw2 just got uploaded - has patches from two more bugs (adding both was suggested by Jaffa):

- #3700 - Put signatures not on top in replies (thereby not forcing top-post)
- #2563 - Please provide an attribution line for replying

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

Are you going to stick to just those fixes that have already gone upstream (or are almost certainly going upstream), or are you going to have some other policy?

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

a fix for the media widget would be nice so that the play button finnaly works when you press it!

I must say, this is exactly why open source software works.

If you're not happy, fix it yourself and share it with everyone. I'm mightily impressed!

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

@jacktanner: fixes from upstream are preferred, fixes from maemo bugtracker are acceptable. I do not want to spend time on development of apps but on incorporating existing fixes for them.

@sygys: patches + packages welcome as I do not have idea what bug you are talking about so will not fix it.

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

its a bug in the mediaplayer widget on the home screen.

Lots of people including myself have problems with the play button, it most of the time just works. but sometimes it just doesn't react anymore. the back and forward buttons work fine.

Its like there is some sort of statement wrong wich prevents the play button from reacting.

I hope you understand what im trying to say. I have put a picture of the playbutton i mean.http://www.sygysweb.nl/download/home.jpg

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

@sygys, it sounds like unless you can point to a specific patch attached to a specific bug report in the maemo bugtracker, you're unlikely to see a fix from hrw.

@hrw, that sounds like exactly the right policy to me. as a user, i don't want to become dependent on some patch from you that doesn't get incorporated upstream.

I dont know how to point to a bug report! im just a user! If you guys after my explaination still dont know what i mean then i give up!

hrw You just make your own fixes i wont install them. Everything you fix has absolutely no value to me

We know what you mean, but any one person can't tackle the entire chain of getting things fixed. HRW(http://talk.maemo.org/member.php?u=17745) has decided to focus his work where it will give him personal benefit--and let everyone else know. With a bit of coordination, everyone benefits. As we will benefit from knowing that the "play" button doesn't necessarily work on the desktop widget.

As far as "pointing to a bug report", it's a skill you can learn without learning programming. This link (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5356) points at a bug report I found interesting. If that's what I wanted fixed, that's the link I'd hand to HRW.

You can use the search functions of the bugs.maemo.org website to find the right bug, or start a google search with "site:bugs.maemo.org" before your your keywords. My complete search was "site:bugs.maemo.org media player widget play button".

The bug id you want is https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7479.

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

@sygys: bad news for you - this applet is closed source so only Nokia can fix it ;( Good news is that in #5894 (#7479 is duplicate of #5894) there is a note that some things for fixed for PR1.2 so maybe it will be fixed.

@Alan: #5356 got moved to brainstorm which means "let someone write other Contacts app" so sorry, no bonus.

I believe he can only post compiles for fixes already available but not yet released.
Unfortunatelly, your issue doesn't seem to have a fix yet.

Re: My repository with system updates is now on-line.

Quite an old thread, I know, but I'm too interested in this to let go: can this repo still be considered active now in the post-PR1.2 era?
And is there more inside than "just" modest? Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with providing modest updates. But obviously, believing numerous posts in the forums, there are tons of community fixes for numerous parts in or of Fremantle. There should even be private-repos for that stuff. This, after hours of forum searching, is the first and only repo I found so far though...

Anyone has some more insight?

The best bet for community fixes in a PR1.2.1 style is now MohammadAG's "Fremantle Community SSU". It includes many of the Modest fixes that hrw packaged up, as well as fixes to pulseaudio, hildon-desktop and more:

What's the url for his repo? I just see a site to manually download deb files (and no pulseaudio packages?).

Ah, pulseaudio's still experimental.

The SSU repo is still having some kinks ironed out (around GPG).
