Thanks :)

If it would not be too much trouble, would you please vote for it here, so that it could be released to the general public as soon as possible. ;)

a short question...
you removed the "Auto Update"-funktion?
it's okay for me, because of the roaming-fees. :-)

Yes, I had the roaming fees in mind when I did that. It is on by default, but you can switch it off from the settings page. Or turn it back on, if so desired. Also, the update button always works. ;)

By using the 'settings/edit/add' function i reckon you could add in your own conversions for weight/length/anything .... just need to work out how it would work ... it would save me having this installed and 'Gonvert' app ...

Also if i knew how to add in my own ones such as cm - inch it would be wayyyy better than 'Gonvert' as with 'Gonvert' you have to scroll down many many many possible conversion outcomes to get to the one you want the result on as in example with Gonvert section for 'Length' there are over 100 possible outcomes! This is fine for the occasion when you need a conversion on the odd occasion but for someone who needs a particular conversion on a constant daily basis it is a lot of fiddly scrolling to get your desired result.

SASLER ..can you provide any kind of instruction for how to add conversions in, if you give an example for length conversion from cm - inch, the ratio's are

cm x 0.39* = inch
inch x 2.54 = cm

how would i add this into your app???

cheers and super app!

Gonvert - it does all that and way more, so many conversions its seriously overkill because you have to scroll to just find the simple ones :D

Currently all currencies are compared to Euro. So if neither of the currencies is Euro, it will fist convert to that and then convert it to the destination currency. So in theory you could add the following:
Currency: inc (NOTE: it must 3 letters and having it lower case would differentiate it from regular currencies)
Description: Inch
Rate: 2.54
After that you should choose inc and EUR and pretend that the Euro would be cm.

Of course, this is ugly hack. But if there is enough interest, unit conversion feature could be added in the next version. :) It shouldn't be too difficult to do. The only problem is that I'm running out of button space... hmm... Then again, I could split the Update and Settings buttons in half, but them on the bottom row and then add similar sized conversion buttons in the row above it...

Or better still, remove the Update and Settings buttons altogether and add those in the Menu instead. Also I would rather keep the currency and unit tables separate, so that one would not need to scroll too much to find the needed unit.

Re: [Announce] Currency Converter

Ok, I think i have worked out how to do it!

when in currency converter do the following

1) click 'settings'
2) click 'edit'
3) in the 3 blank spaces on the right enter the following details
Currency = CM
Rate = 1
Decription = Centimetres
4) click 'add'
again in the 3 blank spaces on the right now enter the following details
Currency = INC
Rate = 0.39
Decription = Inches
5)click 'add'
6) click close
7) select 'CM' in left hand lelection scroller
8) select 'INC' in right hand selection scroller
9) click 'apply'
10) convert away!
ps. It seems sometimes when setting this up to make it work i have to go back into settings/edit then select CM then renter the number '1' in the rate box then click modify?

As far as i can see you can now only convert up from the CM side as that is using the base of '1', you can add into the right hand column any unit you wish to convert a cm up or down to such as:
if you want to convert a cm to a yard enter a new selection as YRD with rate 0.010936133 in the right hand side selector.

This is good to do to create a couple of converters you may use on a daily basis but for more than a few different converters it wont work as it will get confusing tracking things,
ie
  • if you have cm on left and inches and yards on the right will work ok for all conversions
  • but if you then add inches on the left and try to convert that using the 'yard' setting you have on the right it wont work because the yard conversion is set to the CM ratio

Sasler, if you were to add a unit converter in the future I would for one be interested to see how you implement it, I would keep it simple with regular units of measurement OR an option to select which units appear in your scrolling selection list in main view (if you know what I mean)

Nice one!

Nice one!

Look the posts above. ;) Basically it's using Euro which is always 1 and not your CM. :)

I get ya, nice and easy but it looks a lot better on the eye when you see:
CM --> INC
rather than
EUR --> INC

nice one :)

fraaaaanka 2010-01-20 15:22

Re: [Announce] Currency Converter

Rethinking it, using your way (Euro's selection on the left hand side) would be better for multiple conversions as you could add as many extra conversions as you wanted and name the 2nd column extended part name as
cm -> inch's
cm -> metres
grams -> oz's
inch's -> cm
*C -> *F
km -> miles
etc etc and just use the item on the left as a whole (1) and add the conversion in for each one.

Anyway, well impressed with your app .... it does what it says on the tin ..... and more!!!!
Nice!

Re: [Announce] Currency Converter

I got a new version (0.5-1) in Extras-devel, which includes these much requested help files. ;) But the question is: should I promote it to Extras-testing and loose all the votes and reset the 10 day guarantee time in the process? :confused:

The 1-2 days I might loose with the guarantee time, is OK. But I'm not so sure if people are willing to vote again for this app.

Any thoughts? To promote or not to promote?

krk969 2010-01-20 16:57

Re: [Announce] Currency Converter

I would suggest the version in extras-testing remain unless there are serious bugs ( you dont want to lose votes ;))
things like help files or minor cosmetics can go as updates later as well once its promoted to extras.

suggestion : have you thought about making it as a widget, would be a nice addition for the desktop.

Too late. I already lost everything when I uploaded it to Extras-devel, which I find odd, so I promoted it. Might as well. :)

Here is a "little compliant about the system"... ;)

With the update I lost all the votes, so I would really appreciate if all of you would vote again.

One of the apps I've been waiting for. Great! Just donated, too.

Suggestion for a furture update: it might be nice to have more than two currencies available on the main screen.

Thanks you very much. :)

About those additional currencies, why not. But I'm seriously running out of screen space for the buttons, if measurement unit conversions would be added too. ;)

IMO, no need for the settings button to be upfront; could be in the drop-down. That would give you a bit more space, no?

Yes, I agree. I already thought of that few posts before. I think moving the update button too, would not be a bad idea. What I also could do, would be a button that change the function of other buttons. For example, it could change between currencies and measurement units.

You can add it manually. I could tell you how, but it now has those cool help files, so I would prefer if you could try to use that and report back if you thought they did explain it well enough. :)

As for the preset currencies, they are the ones that are provided by ECB and Vietnam dong is not in it, sorry. :(

Ah, OK. Well, in that case I'm sorry. As long as they are not listed Euro foreign exchange reference rates, it won't work. Sorry.

I suppose a lighter version of this as widget would work, but I have not yet done something like that, so it would take some learning. Weren't you trying to a desktop widget with Qt? Did you succeed?

Re: [Announce] Currency Converter

I was also missing this app. Great. The converting it self works good, but I found a little defect, would even call it a bug.

When I open the Currency Converter and click on any of the hyper-links, like Donate or GNU General ..., then I get the following.
  • It opens 2 windows, Web and the designated web page
  • After that the other windows from microB crash

It will give me a message that the already opened web page is not responding and asks if I would like to close it. Now if I try to open any web pages from desktop shortcuts or even from a new "Web" window, then it does not work, just a blank white screen. Seems that only the "Web" instance that the Converter opened still works, as from there I could open new web pages. Only way to remove the problem is to close all the opened web pages and the Converter. Usually also needs some time or to open the "Web" again to get the desktop links working again.

Voted, but still it is a bug ;)

Yes. And portrait mode would also solve this and the ease of use thing at the same time.

Yes, you are right. This is definitely a bug. However, I'm not sure if this bug is the app, Qt framework or MicroB. I strongly suspect that it's in the Qt framework for Maemo 5.

For one thing, this kind of behaviour is not present in Windows (yes, as Qt is cross platform, I've programmed this app in Windows ;)). Also I use a different method for the links in About dialog and the Donate button, yet the result is the same. That is, it always opens the Web link page in addition of the actual web page. Also if you try to open more than one or two times the links, some of the web pages start to crash.

I wonder if this is a known bug with Qt or something... :confused: I need to investigate.

As for the app itself. The About dialog does not give enough feedback when a web link is selected. This, in turn, will result in several selections by the user and the error described above. The About dialog should close when a link is successfully selected. I'll try to add that in the next feature. :)

Thanks for the well presented and accurate feedback. This kind of info is invaluable for making better and well polished apps! :)

Hey Sasler,
I have 'my menu' installed on my N900 which sorts all my shortcuts into a few folders rather than a long list where you have to press more to get to new apps installed.

your app appears in 'other' ... would it not make more sense for it to appear in 'office' or 'learn&science' ??

I see your point, but according to the guidelines from the development wiki, is should put this app to utilities and there it is. It seems that MY Menu is missing that. Maybe the developer of My Menu should add that. :)
