N900 Alarms Goes On When Phone is Off?
 

Did you guys know that the N900 Alarms Goes On When Phone is turned Off? I didn't know that until now, the alarm went on and the phone was turned off. It asked me if i would like to turn the device on or not. lol. Interesting.

Yeah, I use it all the time.

If i'm in bed browsing, and I doubt the battery will last until the morning, and the charger is on the other side of the room, I just turn it off to save power, and the alarm still works. Genius!

I think S60 devices do it too, not sure though.

This is native to most nokia phones and has been for quite some time.

lol, that's pretty cool. I wonder how does the phone know when to turn on the alarm if its off though? I thought once the phone is off it is like fully off, so how does the phone turn on the alarm if its not on? o.O

It's not off, that's why removing battery does something different. And it charges. etc.

And this isn't the coolest, the actual WOW for me was a few years ago (all nice Nokias have it) when my phone auto-offed itself for low battery at 18:00 and at 8 AM it rang. The damned thing rang, it kept some juice in its pockets to wake me up.

Every now it just surprises you.

A godsend feature in my opinion.

Enables you to turn the phone off whilst asleep, avoiding any message notifications or unwanted 3.am calls!! =)

One of the reasons I have bought Nokia's for last 10 years.

Cool feature. I wonder if it uses something similar to the scheduled power-on many PC BIOSes have? It's possible that it sets itself to wake up on the next alarm event whenever powering down.

could it be possible to use this beahviour to build an app to turn the device on with an sms? it would be a cool feature! it could be used together with other features such as invisible mode and google latitude and maybe front camera as an anti-theft app. yes i like dreaming.

It is a feature of realtime clock (RTC) included on the phones (and PC's). RTC is always on to keep the clock on correct time even when your phone/pc is off. You can also program your RTC to do things at certains times - such as turning on your phone/PC.

If you want to do this on pc, search for "ACPI wakealarm" to see how it can be done.

Not possible. While off the cellular modem is off, too. Only the basic core system (clock, charging support, ...) is alive in the power off state.

Not only it's not possible, I REALLY don't want anyone remotely activating stuff in my phone. What is this, the US? (ha!)

lol thats cool to know, this is the first time i use a phone as a main alarm clock lol. i wish the n900 alarm rings longer though.

You can have War and Peace audiobook as a ringtone if you wish.

Do you mean it auto-shuts off after a while? That's good, you might not be there and there's little you can do while other people wish you had something terminal.

it's a very useful feature that winmo never really quite mastered.

There were a couple of apps that claimed to do it but it was very hit and miss in my experience. Could never us a WinMo device as a reliable alarm clock.

Palms can do it, but they never really turn off, they only go into a standby mode - unless you pull the battery, which wasn't possible on all devices.

I'm thinking of doing this, but any word on battery drainage on startup?

(i know it's not as much as the N800, which took 15% of battery capacity to boot up...)

EDIT: never mind, did it myself with lshal | grep battery: it actually went up to 48% from 46% for me. i'm assuming that's not actually the case so it's pretty much negligible.

I mean like the duration of the alarm. It rings like twice, first time its not as loud, second time its louder. Like my actual alarm clock will continue to ring until i press snooze or sleep and than it will stop. Can the N900 do something similar?
