There is claws mail in the extras devel repositories though I doubt that it is hildonised so be aware of complex menu trees :)

I've been happy with Yahoo Mail for years, but I guess some people have more complex usage patterns.

Re: alternative email client?

its not about compex useage patterns, its about having a local email client which works (and the client have very few features as it is so it should be speedy as hell lol)

Re: alternative email client?

I tried out the Claws port (the version previous to the one currently in devel i think). It worked well enough to launch and pull down mail. The interface was pretty crazy, stylus definitely required. It got crashy looking through the menus so I uninstalled it. I've been meaning to check out the newer build but haven't had a chance.

Not sure who is working on it either, or if its still being worked on.

well i think the n900 is going back for blackberry bold 9700. I just cant afford a biz user to have a email client on the device which can take up to a minute to open the inbox lol

Have you updated to the current firmware? I think one (some?) of the issues with slow inbox opening was addressed.

But you can assign a shortcut to each menu operation, so if you don't mind (or even prefer) to use the keyboard, then every common operation is available immediately.

That fixed slow Inboxes if you had thousands of email. I cleared out my mailbox and it still didn't help. Considering that it's Linux (and that it has 32GB of storage) I'm surprised Nokia didn't just use (modify for Maemo) fetchmail to download, msmtp to send and write a nice GUI mail client that read imap dirs. It would have been so much simpler and more reliable.

Another thing that's missing for good alt email client support is something like the browser switchboard but for email clients.

I can understand going back to the Blackberry for business e-mail. Unfortunately the N900 currently does not compare well - on the Blackberry e-mail can be checked in an instant. And the device has spellcheck (necessary for business), push email, encryption, etc.

I must admit to being disappointed with the N900 mail client. Things have improved since the firmware update, but I miss my Blackberry.

Having said that, web browsing on the N900 compensates for the pain.

Nokia - Please improve e-mail. You are a bigger company than Apple, you have been making 'phones longer than RIM. At least add spellcheck.

a must have for business users. i hope this issue gets solved quick.

Re: alternative email client?

The current email client just sucks,

No PUSH email (I just can't afford to give nokia my passwords)
No spell check
When you send mail, and it fails, there is no notification, it's just stays in the outbox, that can really screw up things.
Mailboxes disconnect for no obvious reason
It continuously makes annoying sounds as mailboxes connect and disconnect.
I can go on and on about it.

Really a webmail interface is just better, at least you know the email was sent once you press send.

I really wish someone would port a decent mail client (Tbird?)

Please vote for the imap idle bug to be fixed, then you can have push email :-D

Re: alternative email client?

I've been using claws already on the N800, and while it's interface on the small screen has a steep learning curve, claws also being my main MUA on the desktop, I find it easy to manage.

Configuration of the one in extras-devel(-testing?) can be a bit annoying as some dialogs are cramped, but one can manage and you can also just edit the config.

Be sure to open the Network log window if it feels unresponsive, if you do silly things like checking multiple servers with a few hundred mailboxes every 10 minutes, but all this can be configured to your liking. And most importantly, it handles this

AFAIK, it does not yet support IDLE, but you will want to double-check that.

It's definitely worth a try and taking the time to master the UI. I'm very happy it has turned up in the fremantle repositories.

Re: alternative email client?

I'm very happy with claws mail. I have a very large IMAP box and claws mail performs better than my thunderbird (desktop pc). Beside this, there is no feature i miss in claws mail.

Some hints:

1.) If you choose remember password and internet connection is lost it's sometimes impossible to reconnect.

2.) Have a look at the options and choose a smaller font.

Re: alternative email client?

I have been using Claiws almost two months now (and for a couple of years on the N800).

Definately choose the smaller font you can accept and use the arrow and enter keys to navigate.

I love how reliable application Claws is and yes the user interface could be improved.

Re: alternative email client?

i agree with most post here... for a internet tablet (noo it not really a phone...) one of the main things you do on the internet, email, is really the worst part in my yes of the N900.

Even the UI is not really well thought through.. for example the send button.. Why on earth is that in the top right corner?? I constantly have to scroll up..
Yesterday a friend of mine played with it and send an email from my N900. he started pressing the status bar (with the font stuff) to send the email.

Why is that font bar there? I really dont need that, never use it (or 99.99% of the time) in normal mail client also. And here it fills up screen estate big time. And it doesnt have a icon that you really want and use in 100% of the emails.. and thats sending the thing!

Email app is one of apps on N900 that is just really really under standards. Its like proof of concept.

BUT http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_Shortcuts_and_Gestures You can send with CTRL-Enter, and reply CTRL-R.

No, it's there allright. It's right-click on a folder, so on N900 'push and hold stylus'.

Also, I find the easiest to read manual is directly upstream, at http://www.claws-mail.org/documentation.php when I'm sitting on a big screen.

Re: alternative email client?

I'd definately like to see an improved email app. After years of using Profimail on S60, would love something similar.

Kind of worrying that I can't read my emails off line unless I have an internet connection active.

How do you do that? Can only mark one message at a time as "Mark as Read" using a long stylus press.

Not sure where your speed problem is , but PR1.1 fixed my inbox problem, and its near instantaneous for me now on all my in boxes.

I have an MFE account doing push emails calendar and contacts, a pop account with Yahoo, and an IMAP account and Finally a Nokia messaging account that pushes my Gmail to me.

I like the way Modest handles multiple accounts seamlessly.

Any good alternative at the moment?
Like that claw .. (if it is, i never used it)

Re: alternative email client?

Another issue in the mail client, when a mailbox is slow to answer, the folder "inbox" disappears until all the messages have been downloaded... what a shame when you launch 3G, then mail client starts to download messages, doesn't achieve to download them all, and then you have no acces at all to the inbox !

oh, the long push on folder to mark all messages read... that doesn't work :) I can press the folder as long as I want, it does nothing

I had in the idea to start the development of a new mail app, but I wonder if it's a good idea, because it will certainly take a long time before having a client handling all the basic things needed for mail... And with meego on the way, maybe a new mail app will be soon published in Qt, compatible with maemo

sorry for reviving this old thread. but can someone please tell me how to get rid of them annoying >> when replying to emails. I know why they are there but i dont like them, i think the fact that the email says re: should be enough to know it's a reply.

thanks
