Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Just read that Nokia have made OVI maps content free for some devices.
I can only assume the N900 will follow See http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/...e-devices.html This is GOOD NEWS if they do, and frankly one of many things they've got to do to compete with Google and in particular Android. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Yes. Definitely this is a great news. Now there is one more reason for me not to go back to Android, iThink(g) :)

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Although that announcement does not say N900. I cannot imagine now they wouldn't do it on N900 though. Maybe just need to port latest version -- surely they won't freeze maps dev on this device? Can't imagine it.

Nokia to offer free navigation??
see this engadget article... though i don't see any proof for that ... yet

Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
sounds too good to be true...
but it would make sense regarding google's navigation solution. let's see what will come (: |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
if they could not be bothered to have the latest version on n900 when they could have made money from it why would they bother now they will not. hope i am wrong
|
Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
Let's hope that ovi maps 3.X are going to be available for the N900 then..

Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Why can't the latest version of ovi maps be ported to work on N900??
Think i heard something about it did not suport touch screen or something... But that does not make sence to me.. Why should the old version that folows the tablet be more touch screen friendly? Anyways, it's great news that nokia are going to make turn by turn nav free. :) |
Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
Let's hope older NITs won't be left behind too...
|
Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
i hope i have to pay for navigation. then i have more rights (to complain) and nokia has more incentive to really improve it.

Who's going to buy Sygic now?

hmpf... paid 599€... but the cheaper phones get the free t2t-navigation first? -.-'

Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
It's not on the roadmap for N900 and they are focusing on getting it done for the next generation of Maemo devices instead. This means, without a doubt in MY mind, that we'll never see this for the N900.
If they are talking about getting Maemo 6 done in a year or so and they won't even look into making Ovi Navigation available for the N900 before it's up and running for next gen, then we'll never see it. We'll all have Maemo 6 devices long before we can realistically expect it for the N900. I really hope I'm wrong. |

"In a call with Michael Halbherr, Nokia's VP of Social Location, we were told that the new Ovi Maps would arrive on the flagship N97 very shortly. It's currently a "software logistics issue" related to the maturity of the N97 device. N900 owners shouldn't hold their breath, though, as Nokia is focusing on bringing its free navigation service to the next generation of Maemo devices. That's not to say that the N900 won't get it eventually, only that it's not currently on the roadmap." I am VERY unimpressed by these news and since I am still in my initial 14 day trial, I think this is going back to base to be replaced with another option from the competition. Hope there is a clarification soon about this - is this pay to test???? Bring out the device and then not support it? Do they want to steer people away to other brands?? C'mon Nokia, wake up!! |

I have a feeling the N900 won't get the update since Sygic is already coming out with a navigation app but for a fee.

I know...Nokia wants this comunity to write it...
I am more and more anoyed... |
Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
Wow. No N900, no Maemo device at the moment.
Heck... if they bring this to the N810 for free, I'll be SET. Do it... do it Nokia. I'll even stop complaining about the lack of support. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
Seriously guys.
Did you guys ever on ANY phone get a free next version of a preinstalled payware unless it was preannounced before you bought it? I don't think it's that common. Ovi Maps is just now turning free, Nokia will use it to improve future sales. |
Re: Ovi Maps goes free for premium content (no N900 *yet*)
It seems everything is "Milestone: Harmattan"

First take a look at http://wiki.maemo.org/Navigation_Tools. You'll find some of the tools support the route generation that I suspect you're wanting. Also try out Maep, a nice port of a Google maps viewer with very fast startup. I think it's only in Extras-testing, so you'll need to enable that repository (http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras). |

Besides which - everybody else is getting is really the point. Phones much longer in the tooth than the N900 are getting it. I don't think it's an unreasonable to fell let down if all other current phones are getting it but we don't. It's not like nokia haven't use navigation as a selling point. I'm not sure I'd have bought an N900 if it didn't have GPS - it's not therefore unreasonable to expect that functionality to be properly supported. |
Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
if the n900 doesnt get the ovi map, then nokia has really drop the ball on their own toe. not only will this be my last nokia, but will also be the last nokia i recommend. so far nokia hasnt shown much support for the phone, the maemo community (this forum) is the only reason why i like this phone.
|
Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
That's ridiculous. He said "all GPS enabled nokia smartphones". So, the N900 is no smartphone, but an Internet tablet, or how do they explain this?
|
Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
i guess they will upgrade maps at some point and maybe add navigation for free ...
but i guess we need to "fight" for that :D |
Re: Nokia to offer free navigation??
The reason this isn't on the N900 is that Nokia don't want to put any more dev time into the device beyond bug fixing, and they're putting everything into Maemo 6 which will be their standard platform for all their phones circa 12-18 months.
