N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
would you buy a new N900 now or wait for the Dell Mini 5 ?
|
Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
I trust Dell as much as I trust a £5 hooker not to give me an STD......
Thats +1 for N900 if you were wondering. |
Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
I've already bought an N900. If the Dell Mini 5 had already been out I'd have bought the N900 anyway.
I don't think you are going to find a Dell Mini 5 fun here... |

As a phone, I think a case can be made for a platform that is well integrated but limiting. I don't need my toaster to run Mutt, so I'm content with it not being open and extensible. But... Once I get past the utility of a phone, any computing device other than that (like a tablet, or a netbook), I find Android to be much less compelling. This forum is predominantly made up of people who enjoy tinkering, who want their device to do whatever it is they think it should be able to do (not what the manufacturer thinks it should do, or the carrier). That is a powerful paradigm. |
Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
part of my dilemma is that I am looking for the device to be primarily an internet device which would mean browsing, skype, gps, etc and a cell phone a distant second - and I want to be able to have these things with a basic phone plan, not a data plan.
does the N900 fall into these possibilities? |

Many people find the built in GPS application not very useful. Good third party GPS (both paid and free) should eventually be available. |

Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
sorry should have clarified that -
no on the data plan - yes on the wi-fi - that would be the primary connection to the internet - browsing, skype, etc. |

I have a personal wireless network in my house and I also use my University free wifi when I'm there. Works for me! |
Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
wow that dell seem pretty cool, but i'll probably still take the n900 if i had a chance.
I love nokia because they always try to give as much features and freedom possible in a device. |

Look at this, a real Dell Mini 5. I think this is what many of us wanted a NIT to be. It's easy to see maemo on this form. |
Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
i would choose the n900 over all the current devices for looks and features. and thats what im typing on now. android sounded good when i heard about it, now im not so sure since using this!

Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
For primarily Wi-Fi browsing, I'd look into an N810 and a low end phone combination. Its bigger screen will make the end result better even if the slower processor makes it slower.

Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
if the mini 5 is on tmobile, i'll definitely look into getting one

Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???
Runs Android. I think I'll stick with a real Linux stack :)

[QUOTE=CyberCat;620271..I got the N900 a few weeks ago after owning the N810 for several years....[/QUOTE]
Welcome on board, CyberCat. I have the tmobile 1$ a day plan and it works, kind of slow, but it does work. Dont deal with any tmobile CSR, just go walmart or anywhere buy a tmobile prepay card, then go online, tmobile.com to activate the card and choose data plan. I turn it on when I am out of town and turn it off when I am back in town. I have wifi at my work place as well as at home. Welcome again, bun |

Go tmobile.com, home page>plan>all plans>prepaid plan or here I went to get a $20 phone came with a prepaid sim card or you can order just the prepaid sim card for $10 (the card itself is about $7). I got a very good Nokia old phone with BT support, talks to my N800, but I never make any real use of it yet. I went to the tmobile.com web site, activated my phone, chose plan pay as you go (talk minutes are more expensive than the other plan, but there is no per day charge, so one can sit on it till being use on talk plan), never talk to any CSR. Some people posted that talking to the CSR and activated a smart phone like N900 will cost more. I did it all online without having talking to anybody. I sit on it for several weeks, till I need to go out of town, I then switched from talk plan to data plan 1$ a day, unlimited data, it counts by the hour, midnight to midnight, you allow to make one change a day, more than one change, it will cost 1$ per change. And when I am back in town, I switch back to talk plan to avoid the 1$ charge. It is not fast enough to use it for skype, but otherwise, it does everything like a 56kb modem suppose to do, slow, but will get you online. The tmobile page is SO CONFUSING, even the CSR would NOT understand what to do. I once called up to ask for help, the CSR insisted sidekick plan ONLY works on sidekick phone and NOTHING ELSE and please DO NOT WASTE his breadth to keep explain it! what a jerk! anyhow, I am using it quite happy about it, not necessary the best way to get online, but its a way that fits my current budget. I can not get what other people have been able to get online, maybe I dont understand or I have not tried hard enough, it works with some hiccup or you can have the real plan, I guess, something like 30$ a mo for the phone and $10 a month for the data plan. In the above thread, if you know how to setup your own proxy, you can get 3G going, much faster than 2G. I am still learning how to get a home proxy works :(..... Hope this helps, bun |
