Removing unnecessary files on N810

I'm removing a lot of unnecessary files, and after reading a couple of threads here, "Deleting Applications" and the excellent "Tuning the N810", after doing some things that people will probably call wreckless - removing README files in in a multitude of folders in ~/usr/share/ as well as going into ~/usr/share/applications/hildon/ and deletingthe *.desktop files for the apps I'll never use, as well as getting rid of the *.png files in ~/usr/share/backgrounds - killing all of the locales that I do not need... with:
Xournal
MPlayer
Tear
Skype
Evince
Mauku
Hometools
among others...
already installed, I've gotten about 127.5mb free... but I know I can get more. Any ideas where else I can get rid of stuff?

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Heya Gerb.

I'm sure it's probably too late for this but it would have been best to delete everything that you're doing by command line and saving each record of it in a Notes file.

That way, you would have something to refer yourself to if anything went south, but more importantly, you would be able to share that doc with us so we could easily follow what you did.

And yeah, there's just a ton of useless crud that comes with Diablo. I think I remember that there even was a 10 meg Chinese font or something that wasn't needed. Could be wrong on this though.

Anyway, I did the same thing you're doing awhile back and deleted everything I could.

I ended up screwing the pooch when simple programs no longer functioned.

If you ever reflash and do this again, would you mind doing the command line suggestion and share that with us?

I still don't know how to dual boot so I definitely will follow what you're doing since it would be a simple copy and paste in Xterm.

Thanks.

Sure... I'm pretty "safe" with it, just do a few things that aren't too destructive. I'm a stickler about space, but not to the point where I lose functionality.

I can pretty much list out what I'm doing a bit later. I'm just really killing a lot of locales, keyboards that aren't EN_US or EN_GB, and killing the backgrounds - I never use the stock ones anyway, and I only use the Echo theme, so I kill the rest.

But I'll see what I can do.

Ok, now this is funny. I manually removed all of those, installed localepurge via dpkg and only saved 295k of space. So I'm doing by hand what localepurge && docpurge do by script.

Thanks Gerb!

If you post a Notes file that I can copy and paste in Xterm as root, I'll definitely be the first to try this out.

I also could use some extra space as well but I no longer trust myself deleting unnecessary files on the tablet. :)

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Addison, I might disappoint you by not being able to post my actual commands - but what I'll do is list out what all I did do. Not exactly the same, I just had completed everything and not sure if I'll be going back from a reflash to where I'm at now.

Gimme a while, but you'll see what I've done. It's nothing groundbreaking in the least, and I'm rather deliberate with what I delete.

pycage 2010-01-24 13:41

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

I'd suggest you rather boot from MMC (which can be quicker, too) than wreaking havoc deleting random files. The files are registered in a package database and having them missing may cause package installs or firmware updates to fail.

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Thanks and no disrespect, but I had to chuckle at one thing... "firmware updates".

No firmware updates are ever going to happen for Diablo from Nokia. To Nokia, it's dead. Very dead.

Well shoot!

That's going to be much harder to follow along and take just as much time to complete as it probably took you.

Well, when you do post on this, I'll try to turn all that junk you did into running command lines for others to follow or in case I ever need to do this again.

Thanks Gerb.

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Give me a couple of days. I want to reflash - yes, I'm that bored - and might do so tomorrow. I'll try to note all that I do, but part of me wants to see if localepurge and docpurge are pretty much the same. I truly think that they are, and all that's left is to go into usr/etc/ and get rid of the *.install files there.

The rest, I listed above, I'm not a fan of any other themes, so I kill them all but Echo.

Yes, to Nokia it's dead, but maybe not to the community. Isn't there some project ongoing for providing community-driven SSU?

Hey Gerb, if you're actually that bored with your tablet as of late, maybe you should look into making your own custom desktop theme.

It brought back a little life and joy with mine. :)

I cannot link to it explicitly, but I swear that's been shot down as well. A community based SSU and have it kill your device would be... a bad thing. Especially if there was no governing body to commit, test/QA the updates. I love this community, but that would make even me leary.

Okay... this is my own personal method for removing a lot of unwanted/unnecessary flies on my N810. This isn't perfect, there's quite a few tweaks that I use also with the browser and other stuff - all pretty much taken from Brontide (see first post in this thread for the link to that thread) or other threads here at TMO - and came up with the following just for space. Speed tweaks are different and not really listed here...

Per usual, your results (mileage) might vary (YMMV) and this is just a routine that I've created over the last couple of years of owning my N810 and I tend to do this when I'm bored or want to reflash my N810 because I got too adventurous with some of the (then) newer apps on this site. No more updates, no more stuff to try other than DialCentral.

I start with the following Application Catalogs:

Nokia Catalog
http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/
user

Nokia Catalog (3rd Party Software)
http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/non-certified/

maemo Extras - Diablo

MGPov Diablo

Qole's Repository
http://qole.org/repository/
maemo
main

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Then install pretty much in this order:

advanced-backlight 0.15-0
DialCentral 1.0.10-8
Evince 2.2.1.1-1.maemo8
hometools 0.9.5-1
large-statusbar-clock 0.7-7
mauku 0.6.2
mPlayer 1.0rc1-maemo.29.n8x0
rootsh 1.8
Tear 0.3.5
RTComm Beta 2.4.1

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Then start with removing things...

root
cd /etc
rm *install -r

note: This step kills the gizmo, skype and rhapsody installers - saves very little space.

cd /usr/share/applications/hildon

rm voip*
rm rhap*
rm osso_rss*
rm osso_help*
rm osso-global*
rm bookma*
rm giz*
rm hwr*
rm osso-addr*
rm modest*
rm chat*

note: My install is a bit different, but I tend to not use Rhapsody, Search and a few others since some are duplicated in the main icons (Contacts, New Internet Call, New Chat, New E-mail for instance. Bookmarks can be accessed via the Web icon too)

cd /usr/share/applications/hildon-home

rm promo*

note: Reminder, this is my typical install, feel free to ignore these deletions outside of the Rhapsody, Skype and Gizmo desktop files.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Then I use localepurge & docpurge to get rid of some locales on programs and files that I'd never use. Install in this order:

note: Mine were on my external memory card in a folder named Downloads

cd /media/mmc1/Downloads
dpkg -i pcregrep_6.7-1osso1_armel.deb
dpkg -i color_ls_1.0-1_armel.deb
dpkg -i libpcre3_6.7-1osso1_armel.deb
dpkg -i localepurge_0.5.8_all.modfied.modfied.deb

run: localepurge && docpurge

This setup assumes that you are using US-EN - EN_US. If you're using something else as your default language use this:
Quote:

This comes from this thread - thanks to qwerty12 for his work on this.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

note: I tend to disable Metalayer-crawler because it tends to get stuck sometimes, eats up RAM and battery juice.

update-rc.d metalayer-crawler remove

note: this will remove the ability of the Media Player from auto-recognizing/autoload into Library recently uploaded files - I just click the ones I want to load as I wish to anyway.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

note: I tend to remove the rest because even after doing so a few times, I've never had a problem, YMMV

cd /usr/share/common-licenses
rm *

cd /usr/share/doc
rm *

cd /usr/share/gtk-doc
rm * -r

cd /usr/share/info
rm *

cd /usr/share/backgrounds
rm *.png

note: I use only the echo.desktop, so I remove all other *.desktop except default.desktop and echo.desktop. I also do not ever use the standard backgrounds. Again, YMMV

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

note: Extra removals - I don't suggest these fully, but I tend to these anyway

cd /usr/share/keyboards

note: I remove all but: en_US.vkb, latin.special.vkb and en_GB.vkb

cd /usr/share/locale/

note: I remove all but: en@boldquot, en_CA, en_GB, en@quot, and en_US

cd /usr/share/osso-help

note: I remove all but: en_US, en_GB and graphics here

cd /usr/share/themes

note: I remove all but: echo, Emacs, default and Default here

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This method will save you about 26mb before disabling all of the aforementioned Application Catalogs, around 33mb or so after disabling all of the Application Catalogs - Extras-Devel is the biggest culprit.

But that's my quick method to update and rid my machine of unused space. I tend to do more than this, but this is the quick and easy method. The other tweaks are just... well, because I don't know any better.

I hope this helps just a little. And would love to see more space tweaks added. I do tend to stay around the few areas that have historically not been volatile for me.

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

This is awesome what you did here Gerb!

I'll be hitting this on Friday.

Real quick though. Is it possible to use the backup/restore feature (I personally have never used this) and share with us whatever it squirts out so we could simply restore the tablet to the way you have yours currently?

Thanks again for this chief. :)

gerbick 2010-01-27 23:54

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Backup/restore works fine for the installed apps, as well as the other stuff. But the removals all have to be done again. Same for a lot of the other tweaks.

But to be honest, that's what I do normally... I install the apps, arrange my apps like I tend to use them... then backup right there. THEN go remove the stuff. Shortens my time incredibly - but for this one, I did the full install so I could take notes as I went along.

I'm sure I left something out - I'm about .4mb higher than my norm; but it's close enough for me not to go insane.

Addison 2010-01-28 04:07

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

So the four debbies you posted remove all of the language files and fonts that aren't English based in Diablo?

gerbick 2010-01-28 04:15

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

They move all of the language files and man files for the apps - some 14-15mb worth is laying around.

usr/share/locale will still have files - I remove those separately a bit later in the above documentation.

Addison 2010-01-28 04:18

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Thanks!

So I take it that you apt-get remove those debbies afterward then?

I might have spoken wrongly here... apt-get remove will get them out. Yes. I actually tend to leave them since they're only about 400k in total installed.

To be honest, I went in Red Pill Mode and got them that way - felt better doing it that way.

Console Tools by Penguinbait
has a Backup/Restore utility in the PB program.

It makes a complete or partial backup of any partition to any place.
So a backup of the partition with your OS keeps any changes you have made.

( Console tools also has all you need for partitioning mmcs and for cloning the OS. )

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

Well... there's a lot going on all of a sudden. I've been using my N810 a ton more, just reflashed this morning, substituted Opera for Tear, using the Community SSU, managed to squeeze out some more room... changed what I keep and what I don't keep.

Would you guys be somewhat interested in a newer version? There's not a lot changed.

Also... to anybody that's used my method or have their own method, how much space do you have after you've installed everything?

(added) ScummVM, (added) DrNokNES, (added) Opera, (removed) Map (I'm pissed at you Navicore/Wayfinder), (added) AlmostTI85 graphing calculator, (added) Telescope... and still finding myself with around 120mb free. Might install Pidgin instead of RTComm Beta (problems with Yahoo are not easy to walk around and the purple lib update is somewhat bigger than Pidgin in total)...

Just tinkering. And curious...

Addison 2010-05-12 23:13

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

I did your walkthrough step by step (except for the local purge) through the command line and saved it all as a Notes file.

I've installed quite a bit more than yourself and I'm still sitting at 87.1 megs free. :)

gerbick: now that I have all this new recent functionality I would like some help in purging some files as I only have about 10 MB of internal space left.

gerbick 2010-05-13 02:06

Re: Removing unnecessary files on N810

If I can help... sure. Let's start with what all do you have installed, what's active - in terms of your app catalogs - and what languages do you consider "near and dear" to you.

I see Oregon, but oddly enough until I wrote the prior guide, I kept German on my tablet too until I stopped traveling there, what not.

I'm sure we can help somewhat. 10mb is pretty darn tight. I'm feeling cramped under 110mb!

Why not just write your commands into a shell for everyone to see clearly what you're doing? Heck.. it'd be a good start toward writing maybe a shell or Python script later to automate the job for others.

sssshhhhhh!

I can't write Python if my life depended on it. I've been thinking of updating and streamlining the way I do things. But I'd have to pair off with a better developer than myself to do so.

Also been looking into flipping in some of the kernel and browser tweaks into the manual. But once you do that, I'm introducing some stuff that might not work well for everybody.

So I'm taking the non-Python, safe route for now. But I'm willing to work with somebody to make up for the stuff I'm lacking.

My only other question, then, is... do I have to do anything to enable the community SSU? Or is that coming through the standard Nokia repositories? I can't seem to find anything on it in searches.

http://repository.maemo.org/communit...esting.install

Highly worth it!

After the install, the tablet will reboot and you'll have bug fixes and screen rotation to enjoy. :)

Nothing other than get the Community SSU enabler 0.3 app, and then update from there. I've done the SSU on a heavily edited Diablow version... and today I did the SSU right alongside my reinstall.

catalog name: Community SSU - Testing
web address: http://repository.maemo.org/community-testing/
distribution:
components: free non-free

And go from there.

<edit> I didn't see Addison's post! He beat me to it.

Why isn't this published somewhere more openly where non-maemo-talk users will see it?

I guess since it's the "community SSU"... we know that it comes with some caveats. As opposed to if Nokia were to offer it. Then people would demand support as opposed to solving the problems on their own like we tend to do.

Just a thought. I've wondered it too, to be honest.

You mean we weren't already relegated to solving these things on our own? Nokia DOES support it? OK.. can I demand Nokia support the non-Community OS then?

After the fiasco of what's going on with the leaked PR1.2... not sure I'd welcome that disaster to the settled (and dead to Nokia) N8x0 series if I were Nokia.

It was, both in the mailing list and MWKN.

No, this is non-official and Nokia is not responsible for anything we break.
