WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I would like to keep my new N800, but I'm having trouble connecting it via BT to my Sprint PPC-6700. The instructions say to turn BT on on the "phone" and search for it from the N800 by selecting "phone" in control panel. It can't find my 6700. So, I selected Bluetooth in control panel and Devices and it found my phone. I selected Edit and it shows:
Device type: PDA (not phone) Supported profiles: DUN, OPP Cellular type: (none) Bluetooth address: this is OK I also used Connections in control panel to create a new connection called Sprint I went back to Phone in control panel and selected my phone which was listed in the dropdown box. However, when I try to connect, it only intermittently tries to connect to Sprint and neither Sprint nor my phone are listed in Select connection when I try to manually select the connection I want. Any help would be appreciated. |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I have exactly the same problem... I did find this for the 770 but I'm guessing it won't work on the N800.

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I'd still like an inexpensive small device with a browser I can tether to to PPC6700. Any suggestions?

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
How strange.. I just tried the whole thing again, deleted the phone from the bluetooth devices list, put the N800 in visible mode and then paired from the phone. When I went back to the N800 it listed the phone under the phones list, selected it, and then went on to try and make a connection...
It worked! Bizarre... It's now working Nokia N800 -> HTC TyTN. |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
Yes, but the real test is to click the world in the top right box and see if your phone is listed as a selectable connection. No matter what I did, that has never happened. So, disconnect in this pane and try to reconnect in the same pane. If the N800 is working correctly, your phone should be listed in the pane.

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I'm in the same boat - I have a Sprint PPC6700 and an N800. The N800 can automatically connect with the 6700, but it never appears in any connections list.
My phone also never appears in the Phone list in the 'New' menu of the 'Phone' control panel item - to get it working, I have to pair it from the Bluetooth panel first, select it from the Phone list, set up a dial-up connection, and then set my N800 to default to using a phone connection. Between this and the local-link wifi problem, there's not very much "internet" in this tablet. |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
The boat is getting a bit crowded. I also have a ppc6700 and a n800. I tried setting up the connection as a t-mobile connection and the phone appeared in the Select Connection dialog and attempted to connect but the connection was not successful. Maybe there is a way to edit the connectivity settings - connections dialog under the connection manager to allow the t-mobile connection to be used to connect to the sprint network through the 6700. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I own a PPC-6700 and the N800 and here's how I get DUN to work:
Install PDANet on the Phone: http://www.junefabrics.com/ You don't even need it on your pc once you have it configured properly for bluetooth activesync. The only component of the software that expires if you don't register is their desktop app. PDANet has a setting to allow DUN. Once you have it activated, the N800 will set up a successful data connection with the PPC 6700. The only thing I can say about it is that it works pretty well. As long as you don't lose your connection, you can stay connected for hours. If you disconnect or get disconnected, you will need to soft reset the PPC 6700. The workaround that they have seems to totally redirect the dataconnection of the phone. (You can shut down PDANet to get data working again without a reset, but you still need a soft reset to get another successful BT DUN connection). I think that Sprint crippled bluetooth dun on the PPC 6700. The PDANet application pretty much tricks the phone into using bluetooth activesync to establish DUN (that's my impression, anyway). Let me know if this helps! |

I recently upgraded my PPC 6700 to ROM 3.3 using Colonel's Custom Beta 2, which is great. I'll soon upgrade to Beta 3. It appears the new ROM replaces DUN with PAN. But I returned my N800 because I couldn't get it to connect to the PPC 6700. I'll rebuy if I know I can connect to my PPC 6700. Questions: Does the N800 support PAN, natively? Does PdaNet support PAN, i.e. will my PPC 6700 connect to the N800 after upgrading to the new ROM or would I need to downgrade to ROM 2.2? Does your PPC 6700 appears in the list of Connected Devices using PdaNet? Which ROM do have? Thanks |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
It says I have 2.06.00 installed as 02/22/06. I know I've updated since then!
In any case, DUN works for me! |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
TabulaRasa,
Thanks for the help. I was able to get it working but I had a few problems. Apparently, I had paired the phone to the N800 prior to installing PDANet and that really screwed things up. Also, I was using the trial version of PDANet which does not seem to support bluetooth connections. After deleting all of the pairing and connection settings, re-pairing the devices, setting up a new connection, and registering PDANet I was able to get on-line for about 5 minutes before the connection was lost. The second time I tried I was able to stay on for about 10 minutes. I'll keep playing with it to see if I can figure out a pattern. Any idea why the 6700 has to be rebooted after each of the connection attempt? Thanks, Brad |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
My Moto Q worked out of the box. When you pair your phone to your PC, is DUN a service on it? It may be a limitation of your phone.

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I'm pretty sure that Sprint disabled DUN on the PPC-6700 to get laptop users to buy their wireless cards. There is a program on the install disc that comes with the phone, called wireless modem or whatever -- some people claimed success at wireless DUN. I never did. I think it's because of the bluetooth stack on my laptop, an HP L2000.
However, even when DUN didn't work, the bluetooth active sync did work on my laptop and it seems like the PDANet application tricks the phone into using the sync function to transmit data. I'm not sure why the phone always has to be reset but that has always been my experience. I've been able to stay connected for hours, so I'm not sure of what is causing your problem, but i don't let the phone get very far away from the N800. I'm sure you'll be able to find something that works. I'm probably going to get rid of the PPC 6700 soon, but I want to find the smallest phone I can get that supports DUN without any workarounds. |

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
Hi,
Just reading this forum as I have a PPC-6700 and I am thinking of purchasing a N800. Has anyone tried USB Modem application instead of PDANet? http://www.mobile-stream.com/usbmodem_wm.html I recently upgraded my PPC 6700 to ROM 3.3 using Colonel's Custom Beta 2 and USB Modem has allowed the PPC-6700 to have both bluetooth and USB DUN connections with both Windows XP and Mac OS X.... so maybe it will be robust enough to work with the N800.... Please give it a try... there is a Demo download available that is good for 15 days or 30 connects whichever comes first.... ...hope it works!!! |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
Just for the record, I tried getting the Nokia tablet online using a T-Mobile Dash (WM5 AKU3) and PDANet.
I have a registered copy of PDANet and turned on the Bluetooth DUN option. The tablet could see the DUN profile on the Dash, and I could pair with it. But whenever the Nokia tried to establish a connection, it failed. After digging a bit, it seems that the Dash returns ERROR in response to any attempt to send a dial command. Even from a PC, PDANet always complains that the "modem is busy". I emailed June Fabrics and was told that the Dash is incompatible with PDANet and unsupported. |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I just downloaded the USB Modem trial and was able to dial out with DUN from my laptop using my PPC 6700. I've already returned my N800. Someone should try this with the N800. If it works, I'll buy another N800.

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I would install it but with the way PDANet works on the PPC-6700 I am not sure I'd know if USB modem was actually working. Maybe I'll flash my PPC 6700 and test it and then just restore from a backup.

The strange part is that my laptop will dial out on the 6700 through BT provided I start WModem on the PDA. USB connections have always worked, although I now get nasty messages on the PDA telling me not to tether. The odd part is that I do not get them through BT. This really needs to work and I suspect the problem is on the Nokia side given that my laptop uses DUN on the 6700 just fine. Like I said earlier I am committed to the N800 and think it is a perfect platform to fill the void between phone and laptop - it just needs to work with my 6700! |

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
I started this thread, but then returned my N800 because I couldn't connect with DUN to my PPC 6700. Since then, I have flashed my ROM with Waiten's AKU 3.3 and I installed USB Modem trial and tested it with my laptop. That worked. So, I just reordered an N800 to try again using USB Modem. I'll post my results.

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
Hi all. Sorry for the delay. Looks like we might have a snow day tomorrow, which will give me a chance to catch up on stuff and test out this app.

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
It's fixed.
I downloaded the USB Modem trial and installed it on my PPC6700. I turned on Bluetooth, launched USB Modem and clicked "enable." Then, I powered my new N800 on. I went to control panel and Bluetooth, clicked the Devices button, then clicked New. It found my PPC6700. Device Type: PDA Supported profiles: DUN, OPP, SPP Cellular Type: (none) Connectivity looks like this: Connect automatically: Phone connection Search Internet: never I then clicked Phone and selected my PPC6700 from the list. To attach to my phone, I first turn on Bluetooth and enable USB Modem on the phone, power on the N800. Click the globe at the top left and select a website. The N800 looks for and attaches to my phone. So, USB Modem gives my phone the DUN protocol the N800 needs. |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
Great News !!!!
Thanks...off to pick up a N800 :) |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
jhford: how did you define the connection on the N800? I got USB Modem installed on the 6700, paired the 6700 and N800 (The N800 sees the DUN profile). But I haven't had any luck setting up the connection itself under the connection manager. I have tried with #777 as the dialup number - did you also have to add your sprint username and password?
Thank you |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
You won't see it in the Connection Manager, but it still works.
Here's what I did in this order: Enabled USB Modem on the 6700 Open Bluetooth in N800 Control Panel Devices New It found my phone & the Dun profile because USB Modem was enabled Paired them Opened Phone in Control Panel Selected my phone Opened Connectivity in Control Panel Set up Sprint in Connections as Data Call, #777. finish General tab Connect automatically: Phone connection Search interval: Never Now when you try to open a web page, it will try to connect to your phone first. If USB Modem is not enabled it will time out and you can select a hot spot from Connections. Now if someone can help me get my User digital certificate working on the N800 so I can dial into my Bank of America account, I'll be happy. |
Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
If you flash with the most recent release, as I did yesterday, your phone connection will appear in Connections.

Re: WM5 DUN Bluetooth N800
Nice thread, thanks. I am happily using my N800 with a Nokia E61 as the access modem but now would like to switch to a smaller phone. We are locked into Cingular. Has anybody made this work with a Cingular 3125 (QTEK 8500)?
Thanks, Fred |
