Probably and get iPhone 4 instead. Lack of FREE software support and delay is what i dont' like.

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

i miss an option:

4: i am going to upgrade to 6

and if that isnt possible i think i keep the N900 just as long as i see a good android replacement phone. because if i cant upgrade to a new os version again on a nokia device, then this will be my last nokia.

What to say...perhaps just that I have played a round of Monkey Island 3 while waiting for a movie to start, have three custom screens, each dedicated to certain job/entertainment need, and a good feeling of not being just an average shadow with white earphones in cheap commercial...heck, we are all helping the great platform Maemo is to develop and grow. Don't know how about you guys, but I don't just jump on any bandwagon. In my opinion, this is Nok's V for Vendetta, and I love this blow of fresh air and when next generation emerges I'll be waiting to take a deep breath whether in form of new device or software upgrade. LtR's out :D

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

It all depends on how "compatible" maemo 5 & 6 are.

If the same thing happens to the n900 compared to earlier support for tablets or means lots of the current apps been rewritten to work with maemo 6 then -

Then probably not - I will wait and see - may look at Android phones as comparison.

Eight to Ten months away? Who knows where I will be or what I will be doing? Far, far to far ahead to consider this sort of question.

Nope,I'll not sell it,but,if Nokia release an Maemo6 device after sixth months from launching the N900,and they will focus only on Maemo 6,N900 will be my last Nokia device ever,I swear!I already skipped N97 ,and I bought Samsung I8910hd,and in December, when N900 appear in my country,I decided to give Nokia products one more chance(the last one).Let's hope and see whats next.
Cheers

Nokia, please make the N900 upgradable to Maemo6.

Thank you.

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

i hope they keep their statement that only 1 maemo device (or not that many) per year. if not, then i hope that n900 will get an update or since it's an open source device, putting an unofficial maemo 6 is still possible.

but selling this device? i will not if a maemo 6 device doesn't support t-mo's 1700 3g and it's not a huge leap of technology from the current one. i might be a bit bitter to nokia but i can't go back to htc if winmo 7 can't redeem itself and android os is a downgrade version of maemo in my perspective of an os' / device's potential...

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

I've just got my N900 and loving every minute so far (upgrade from an N95 8gb) so it's way too early for me to say.

I will be a bit disappointed if it's not upgradeable though. I suppose it really depends on what Maemo 6 actually adds.

Bec 2010-01-25 09:32

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

Depends:

- on each new device I have a list of favourite apps, with N900 I took a leap of faith and I'm glad I did - for maemo6 I'll wait till their fully ported if such a thing will even be necessary.
- I didn't want a keyboard but now I don't know how I could live without it, so it depends, rumor has it maemo6 will be keyboard-free
- N900 was quite expensive when I got it, compared to now but... my ol' symbian was falling apart, so I'll get maemo6 @ min 3 months after the release.
- hardware: to be worth it I want to see improvements in video recording and certainly no downgrades. Don't care about multitouch.

So in the end it has to be a shock and a huge leap forward in technology, the way N95 and N900 were, to be worth it.

I really don't see a worthy rival for N900 yet.

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

hi together i really hope that nokia will bring an maemo6 update for the n9 too but i dont belive in it.

From the marketing side maemo6 and some killer features will be a good reason to sell a new device. That its possible to get a new fw with new features for "older" devices we see with apple. They allow the update to the 1.3fw for the 3g and sold the new device 3gs too.

best regards Crown

Im not sure. I want a Keyboard. Since i love my N900, there is no time to hurry for me now. I will wait and see.
I see it like this Maemo6:sure , the first Maemo6 Device:hmmmmmmm. Hope to hear that Nokia brings out a second device with keyboard in 2011.
What i dont think is that maemo6 will be working on the N900. The N900 has no hardware to do multitouch.....

The plan is to get Maemo 6 device when it comes out, but really who knows. We will see the first Maemo 6 device most probally in November or December.

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

It's the only reason I bought it with a one year contract, I 'might' keep my n900, as I like it more and more each day, and if the new device doesn't have a hardware keyboard, then I will definately keep it..

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

No.

Because:
I expect Maemo 6 on my n900
I want my next Mameo device to use dual-core Arm A9 + more powerful OpenGL SGX core.

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

I'm in the 'only if it has a hardware keyboard' camp. Funny, though - I'm actually really pleased with my N900, and if Nokia did nothing but provide security updates I'd still be pleased. Nokia are a business, and if they decide Maemo 6 will only be for new phones that would make sense. Doesn't make my Maemo 5 phone any worse, and it's open enough that the platform won't die as soon as a new OS comes out.

*ducks*

Samsung, HTC, SE, they are all the same. One upgrade to make it work as it was supposed to and that's it. Then you have to get a new device. Nokia is much better, if you purchase a popular product, like the N95 or 5800 or some E series.

But, it seems more and more evident that the N900 is purely a stop gap solution to keep the tech enthusiasts happy because of aging and limited N800/810. Neither the OS or the HW built quality is good enough for the mass market. Besides, apps written with Qt will probably be very easy to convert to Maemo 6. As far as I'm concerned, I have always purchased a new phone within a year in any case, and I don't think this will change anytime soon. :)

I'm for sure keeping mine, nothing wrong with it. So much better than my old phone. It looks like i'll have to keep my Itouch in the same bag for now but that's ok.
I too am in the keyboard camp, and now that I have one, I really like it.

I'll keep my n900 and probably buy the new device if there's some hardware/size improvements
(e.g. cpu >= 1GHz, autonomy really improved, ...)
BUT I for sure will keep the n900 as a replacement device and/or pocket computer.
At least it will be a collection phone ^^

That would be no earlier than summer 2011... by that time OMAP5 will already be announced for 2014!

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

bah, if the N900 stays as it is now and a much better N90x turns up with a not alpha-beta Maemo6, you can have my N900 i would feel like ripping someone off to sell this as a good micro computer/phone.

What happens with N900 is what will steer my decisions later regarding Nokia.

I allways got Nokia for its top notch synch and bluetooth handeling. I had a E60 N70 both those lacked the option to make a shortcut to the "more apps folder" directly to the descktop, this is Maemo ... same story. Same goes for the Camera lens cover when you have the phone in your pocket, you push it open by accident and who want the phone to get active in their pocket? N70 and N900. Finally navigation, but no that was a bluff to. It dosen't matter for me what people i don't know on a community forum says about the age and Maemo is new. Nokia is the ONE who must speak with a straight spine. :) about what is going to happen with Maemo5 or if it is left in the hands of volunteers from now on.

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

i've never sold any of my old phones (or tablets) when i got a new one. usually the new device cannot do everything as good as the old one could, so it's good to have them both. ;)

I hear ya. I always figure on 2 years or more from a phone unless of course there's a drop/breakage/malfuction problem. I only got 15 months from my G1. It still works ok but the combination of limited hardware and Android finally just drove me crazy.

I don't think that will be a problem with the N900 or Maemo. And the N900 hardware feature set is almost exactly what I want/need. Who knows if Nokia's next Maemo goodies will suit me as well.

I'm looking foward to all these cheap N900's coming onto the used market. I will need to upgrade the familys three E63s in about a year, and they are all pining after my N900 :p

Please PM me when you can do me a good deal.

i had for more the 2 years a E90.. never got really an upgrade.
Yes some minor firmware upgrades, but E90 was a S60v3 FP1 phone
but did i ever receive an upgrade to S60v3 FP2 ?? nope never got it.
Which other phone of nokia ever got even a feature pack upgrade?? So not even talking about a S60 version (v2 to v3) but just a FP...

Re: [Poll/Discussion] Are You Going To Sell Your N900 When the New Meamo (6) Device Is Released?

I never sell open devices, and N900 is enough open to fit that category (even the things that are not open can be rev-engineered if needed be). I'm still using my 5-6 years old Linksys WRT54GS and it only got better with time - now I use it as my primary WiFi router that I've customized to do tons of things that todays' routers ten times the price cannot do (and there are people that are doing even crazier things with those devices - e.g. http://www.jbprojects.net/projects/wifirobot/ )... So, there will be a use for it even in a few years from now, maybe something completely different than what it was meant to be.

That being said, I do hope that M6 will be available for N900 and I'd be very disappointed otherwise. I certainly won't buy the next Maemo device anyway, if the claims are true that it won't have a resistive screen and hardware keyboard - those two are must-have, and lack of them is a clear show-stopper in my book.

I voted not sure because I don't know what that device will be like. Maybe it has bloody wings. I agree with the previous post - it's open and an open machine is always useful - heck it could be a NAS, an access point, a rescue device, media center, whatever. Unlikely. But you never know.

:) Last thing that i bought from Nokia that was going to be the device that did it all was E60, i did every FW update but none of what i waited for did show up before they ditched support.

If the movie 2012 is to be believed... then we would be wasting our money on a new device. ;-)

I think it would be too early to dispose within a year unless there is something spectacular in Maemo 6. If it is just multitouch and QT. Then I think will stick with N900 and GTK+.

Which will have Qt and WRT, too. So I guess the N900 will largely be binary compatible with a Maemo6 device. But maybe it will officially get Maemo6.
