Nokia N900 vs. iPhone 4G
I'm confused. I like my N900 a lot, but i've seen some N900 users here that said that they are going to replace it with Iphone 4g. And i really like iphone's design and other stuff, but also like N900.

Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Is white-ranger another OrangeBox ?
|
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Do what you like.
The n900 is the first smartphone that is actually practical to use and is open-source which means I can program it to do stuff if Nokia decided to ignore it. Oh - it is also not locked-down. I can do what I like with it. In fact why don't you post why you are confused and more importantly what you want to do with your smartphone? i |

Need help ASAP! PLZ respond quickly! I'm quite thirsty:confused: |

You may be the type of person that bought the phone by reading all the glossy nokia adds that showed what it could do but are leeery now that you see all the bugs and some hardware limitations. Perhaps you can not develop cool stuff for yourself and depend on others, and now you see how limited this could suddenly become. Maybe you won't feel like getting a new phone if you could get some official reassurance that there will be more than 2 decent games in the Ovi store |

Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
As far as I know (&brands I have previously owned) nokia stands behind their devices more than any manufacturer: http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/00...ip_devices.htm
As you can see this is not motorola or apple that just abandon devices after 1 year because the next better model came out. But even for motorola things look brighter as developers now have the ability to bring OS updates even if a device is no longer sported. And why bother wit iphone? 3 devices and still no video call? most probably the 4th one will be a disappointment as well. As for security that platform is a mess, how can you risk doing something when even the available antiviruses can't be used? No multitasking = no browser & antivirus at the same time... |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Yes, you should change your N900.
|
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Just curious. What makes you think we are interested in your lame torment? If you want an iPhone, then get one.Myself (and I would assume the rest of the world), we don't care.

If you're suffering from post-purchase dissonance already then maybe this phone is not for you.
If you're worried about the general lack of apps you can always explore your N900 more. Take VBA for example, behind the emulator lays a million possibilities. |

Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Oh man, the new iSlate or iTablet or whatever is coming. I've no idea about its features, but I'm gonna get it, since it's made Apple. Also it bugs me as hell, that I'm not able to pre-order iPhone 4G. Apple really should make pre-orders possible before even announcing new devices.

Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
The guy has real concerns, there are many people around the world who don't have the capabilities that some of you forumites apparantly have.
i don't think smart a** replies or put-downs are the answer. i guess that's just me. I love my N900 and i'm a user as well as the OP. Please don't tell me because I just want to use and enjoy my phone with a modicum of security and longevity that i have to get anotherone. Less people means Less Apps Less Support for Everyone. |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Hey man,
Before you buy ANYTHING you MUST do your home work about it first!!! (reading reviews, forums, asking, ...etc) that what i always do So you dont feel any regrets after buying it Because b#%$^ing later is very very annoying... |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Buy whatever you feel looks and works better to you. No need to ask us.
(This is a genuine advice. We will all buy something better when available) |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Usually if you fell the need to ask the answer would be yes :)
If the 4g will do something you need and the n900 doesn't do that go for it. |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
iphone 4G is rumoured to be getting a decent 5MP camera, next year the 5G will introduce a decent flash to use it ;)

Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Dear white_ranger
Basically it comes down to this: (1) You bought the n900 - what do you do with it next? I'll say "use the Downloads link" on this site and look as the apps" (2) You bought the n900 - you now suffer "buyers remorse" - you regret buying it I'll say "return the n900 where you bought it from and get a refund" (3) You bought the n900 - you want loads of apps to play with I'll say "buy and iPhone - it's the market leader of app volume" (4) You bought the n900 - you want to know what this smartphone business is all about? I'll say "google stuff, search these forums and post questions - we will help you" (5) You may / may not have an n900 - you are probably trolling I'll say "Are you this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5tWT6I1GvY" (pay attention to 1:09 - will that be new iPhone?) If you are not (5) then please accept my sincere apologies and do not mean to cause offence. If you have genuine questions please let us know we genuinely want to help. |

I agree - too many sarcastic smart arses on here. Obviously the guy is having second thoughts about the N900. I think theres quite a few on here that went through post purchase depression. Funnily enough I also suffer it when I buy a different car  If you are consider an iPhone whatever its called (or will be called), you might wanna try checking out the iPhone forums as all you will receive on here is a kicking or a cut you down comment - quite pathetic I know. However as the iPhone isn't out yet, why not try to get the best out of the N900 by using some of the new apps and even try testing some of the latest stuff coming through - theres plenty of info around how to reflash etc in case you bugger it up. The N900 is new so expect a few niggles. TBH this phone is one of the best for problem free functionality so far from nokia. Its does most of what it says on the tin and fixes are dribbling through. It remains to be seen how much attention Nokia give to this but now its on Ovi i doubt very much that they will abandon it. Thats just stupid talk. I would recommend learning more and playing with it - maybe even join an iPhoney forum. This lot won't be pleasant if you ask about it on here. Its a NOKIA forum dude - not Apple! lol I love the phone now and can really see the benefits of it in future and the power that it can offer me. I am not a dev either. Just a user that wants the best. And I believe I have it with the N900. |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
iPhone 4G? Can you send me a picture of it? Maybe spec sheets? Maybe some concrete evidence that it might actually be released before mid year or at all? As far as I can tell, if you want a device that you have little to no info on, then there is some serious issues with your decision making process.

Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Well, you posted on N900 forum so here goes...
I would definitely not buy a phone from Apple unless 4G gets pretty much total makeover. So far Apple has shown pretty small ability for improvement. They are also way overpriced for their hardware specs. If I had to abandon Maemo, I would rather get something like Nokia X6 CWM with stuff like free music, Xenon flash & optical zoom and great media playback. I hate the closedness of iPhone, you can't manage your files freely, can't even set favorite ringtone easily. I don't buy the "iPhone has most apps" argument either, since Apple is counting every ringtone, demo, background, level pack, internet site assistance etc. Half of which you wouldn't need if the platform was more open, had decent browser etc. Then they compare their app store sales to other platforms which count only manufacturer app stores that others didn't even have before. Only decent, useful apps should count and those are drowning on something else on iPhone. |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
If you are considering something, you are not an iPhone user. They don’t think they just take. What ever it is.

Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
I'm sorry but you really are posting in the wrong forum since most open-source advocates aren't exactly a fan of Apple or Apple products. And your question is a bit ridiculous. I'm not trying to be a smart *** but seriously, what is even known about the Iphone 4g? Like the other posts before me, why not just learn to use the N900? It doesn't look like you have even given it a try, what exactly is bothering you about it?
Don't just follow the hype/herd. Read and learn about products and you'll be that much more satisfied with your purchases. The n900 does have its flaws (especially if, like me, youre not a developer or know anything about Linux/maemo) but overall it's a terrific gadget and very user friendly as well as functional once you get the hang of it. |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
BREAKING NEWS
An anonymous source with close ties to Apple Marketing department has uncovered plans to launch a mind-altering marketing device. Rumoured to use either some kind of gas or electromagnetic waves as proxy the device is said to directly impact a persons cognitive functions to have them feel that they truly need and want Apple products. This chimes well with the fact that Apple has invited journalists and bloggers to Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco on the 27th of January where Apple CEO Steve Jobs will be unveiling their "latest creation", which he is reported to have said is the most important thing he's ever done. Reports have emerged that this reality distortion field going by the name iWant has secretly been in testing for some time already. Some persons in Maemo community have been having delusions of a non-existent Apple device called "iPhone 4G" and feelings of confusion and anxiety about their purchase of a competitor product. User white_ranger was unable to pinpoint the source of his confusion over the purchase of his brand new Nokia N900 multimedia computer. "I don't know why I suddenly want to change my new phone." Reiterating that he "liked the iPhone's design" he along with some other members expressed their unexplained urge to have this "iPhone 4G" which currently exists only in fantasies. |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
Well I guess we could analyze what has really changed since the first one was released.
But imho: awful camera -> less awful camera or CPU -> somewhat stronger cpu, are not changes. Looking back at the ipods where the same pattern can be noticed, it's probably going to be the same thing with a minor functionality like video call or more gigs for the silly customer. |
Re: Should i replace my N900 with Iphone 4G when it comes out?
I read these stupid panic threads for entertainment, by I usually just end up feeling creeped out. It is so disturbing to me that somesone's device choice can cause such insecurity. This phone, or whatever you want to call it, should be attracting the next generation of computer gods, but instead we have this large influx of complete losers. I hope this delusional spell I'm under wears off soon.
